No signal to monitor after new GPU

I get no signal from anything now, no signal with old GPU, new GPU or integrated graphics. I've tried all with 2 different HDMI cables and all where applicable with DVI/VGA, also tried all with a different screen, no luck. Other than no signal, the PC seems to be running fine.

Old GPU: AMD Radeon r9 280
New GPU: GTX 1070, both are MSI
    Processor: Intel i7
    PSU: Corsair RM 750
    Motherboard: Gigabyte asrock z87 extreme4
Windows 10 if that makes a difference.

I'm pretty lost right now, and very demoralised, any help/advise would be great, thanks.

Can you enter bios? and you can't connect via the motherboard?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭xK Marcus

No, I get no signal at all, so can't get in to bios, and yeah, I get no signal from motherboard output either, with or without any gpu connected.

Have you tried a different monitor?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭MarkAnthony

Always worth checking - power is going to the monitors? No unplugged or switched off cables.

Have you tried defaulting to internal graphics and resetting the CMOS on your motherboard? (See manual clearing bios settings).

Nothing else got a knock? No internal power cables are loose? Check to make sure their are no bent pins in the PCIe slot. RAM reseated?

If all that fails have you tried pulling the MB out of the case and doing a test build on something non conductive to eliminate a short?

Can you put back in your old GPU and make sure it works?

Then put in your new one and make sure the fans spin when booting.

It may remove something from your problem equation. Hopefully you only need a new type of cable.

Yeah, power is on on the monitor, it says on the screen "DVI (OR HDMI) connected no signal" or something like that

I have tried using the integrated graphics, it doesn't work either

As far as I can see, nothing got a knock, no cables are unplugged or loose, PCI slots seem fine and I had taken the ram out and put it back in at one point.

I haven't taken the MB out of the case, not sure how to do a test build though

Already tried old GPU, it doesn't work anymore.

The fans and everything spins and seems to work on both GPU's when I turn the PC on.

I've already tried 2x HDMI cables, VGA cable and DMI cable

What happens when you disconnect hard drives, did it POST?

Make sure you have not dislodged a cable from mobo. Check them all.

Do a ram check ie Run with one ram stick inserted at a time.

I'll have another thorough look now, I've tried to run it with each ram stick individually before though

Board has a debug LED on it. Use it.

    http://www.asrock.com/support/faq.asp?id=334

The assumption would be something has been knocked loose while changing graphics cards, usually a cable.

    Have you cleared the CMOS?

No, I don't know how, or even what CMOS is

Do you have the motherboard manual. It's the manual way to clear all the BIOS settings. It's a common thing to do when you're getting no picture, or the post code (00) tells you too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,012 ✭✭✭✭Cuddlesworth

    Clear CMOS
    Reseat the power cables.
    Reseat the CPU.
Pull the mobo out of the case, test it on a cardboard box.
    Assume the motherboard is busted.

Woot you have a switch! See pages 11 and 12. Press the nipple!!!

See above. It's number 20 on the diagram.

    Suspense is killing me!

Ok, and should I just do it with no GPU in and use integrated graphics, also so I press it when the pc is on or off?

    HOLY ****, WE HAVE VISUAL

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭xK Marcus

Ok, I've got B4 shown now, and on the screen I have some system info and then I can run setup or continue, which one?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭MarkAnthony

Just load optimized defaults or even just continue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭xK Marcus

Ok, so I've got b4 shown regardless of if I have an usb devices connected, and my keyboard and mouse are recieving power, but not doing anything, so can't get passed initial screen for now.

Could it be one of the usb related wires on the motherboard?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭MarkAnthony

It#s probably having an issue with your keyboard, disconnect all USB devices apart from the keyboard. Try it in different USB ports. Let me keep reading your manual :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭MarkAnthony

Okay quick skim didn't help - try just having the keyboard connected to the red USB 2.0 ports at the top next to the PS2 port (the round port).

Is the wirless card connected to a USB header on the motherboard?

Doesn't work with just the keyboard connected, also, the light for num lock is on on the keyboard, and doesn't turn off, so I'm not sure if that's relevant, maybe nothing about the keyboard responds.

I tried those slots but no luck, I had a wireless card in there since a built the pc, but hadn't used wireless in 2 years or so, so I actually just removed that card yesterday when I was trying to sort out my GPU.

Do you have an old keyboard lying around with the circular port on it (PS2)?

How was it connected? To a PCIe slot?

Yeah, that's how it was connected. And I don't have an old keyboard around

Okay Wireless shouldn't be an issue.

    What keyboard are you using?

I wondered if there was a switch to turn off any sort of mad mode the keyboard might be in - I can't see anything. I'm afraid I have to head out so hopefully someone who knows razors stuff might be able to shed some light.

Basically try and grab another keyboard if you can.

If you're in North Dublin you're more than welcome to pop the machine over to me and I can try and get her up and running for you.

Reset the CMOS again. Use the old graphics card not the new one during and after. Bios sounds like its having a issue with the new card.

At the moment I'm not using any card, using the integrated graphics

You need an old style non usb keyboard /mouse. The p2p just to get it up and running.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭xK Marcus

Ok, so all I did was restart and it's working now, I have nothing up on the dr. debug thing, and it's loading windows.

So, the question, what graphics card do I try and use now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

Wells clear out those amd drivers. If not done already.

    I'd try new one again.

Long shot. Is your gpu power cable a Daisy chain cable? Some high end gpu's need two 8/6 pin power connectors to power on fully. I had a 660 TI once that powered on but wouldn't display because it was on half power. I hope it's not to late to try it. Good luck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭xK Marcus

No joy with new GPU, not getting any signal whether it's plugged in to the new GPU or the integrated graphics, the dr debug thing now says A2, which is a problem with IDE or SATA devices apparently, not sure what those are though

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 18,809 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kimbot

Also for your PCI-e there was an issue with a few boards where you had to change the options from Gen3 back to Gen2 or even Gen1 to get the GPU to work.
