Just a thought, all paints now are waterbased rather than oil based in the past. That could account for the shade difference.

Saw it sitting near the shed in connolly the othrer day. Have to say that paint job is a hell of a lot nicer than the god awful paint they used to repant some of the commuter DMUs with. Similar colour scheme to the original but shinier.

I wouldn't worry about the shade, but I think the detail could have been better. Painting lamp bezels and windscreen wipers orange is a bit like painting the light switches and door handles in your house. Very minor complaint though.

The headlight bezels were painted orange from the factory by GM back in '76. It was only later on when they were replaced in service that CIE did not bother painting them. It's actually very good attention to detail accuracy wise.

I wonder what purpose red buffer beams on a bright orange loco serve. :-)

Traditionally locos had red buffer beams.
For better or for worse, buffer beams are becoming a thing of the past.

For me, real trains have red buffer beams.

Great to see, I don't know if it's the old photo technology of the 70s but the orange back then looks a different shade. I think they used IE orange rather than the CIE tan, never mind the GM golden brown shade.
Some pigments are no longer commercially available, so colour approximation would be necessary.

I don't really want to get into an argument, but personally I would consider painting the wipers (and also the horn) as no-nos. I have never seen an 071 with anything other than white/metallic looking light bezels, so I'll have to take your word for it. Have you got any old photos you can link to that show them as orange at one point?

Here is 071 more or less fresh off the boat in Inchicore.

Captain Chaos beat me to it, I believe that picture is a day or two after delivery, the light bezels and horns were always orange from new, just the wipers were untouched (they were originally brushed steel I believe) but considering they have been painting the wipers for years it was either leave them battleship grey (as per the last livery), paint them black or paint them orange.

Side sliding windows seem to have been painted over aswell. Originally same as the wipers.

Like the wipers the windows were also brushed chrome and the original windows were replaced during overhaul with a type that require painting.

I have to say it looks great, nice work IR.

I'm surprised the 'rivet-counters' haven't been on to complain that IR should have removed the newer LED lights and put back the originals!:D

Murphy could do an anniversary special of 071 in this livery.

For anyone wondering what the SA means like I was! From a quick google:
    Railer
    23-03-2013, 12:49 AM

The SA was to do with locos that could work air braked trains. For when the Mk3s just entered service.

The S was to indicate what locos had the CAWS fitted and the A was for what locos had their air brakes commissioned.

The SA started to appear in the early to mid '80s and ended with the IR livery in '87.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

I was thinking that myself! 071 also sounds different to what it did back then. Should have painted 076 in that livery.

Tongue very much in cheek right here. :pac:

Sure even the grab irons on the cabs have been removed now and different handbrake wheels have been fitted to most of the fleet recently including 071
