Do you wear pantyliners?

I wear liners because I like to have fresh underwear and because I exercise a lot, it means my underwear don't feel damp, but I was chatting to a friend earlier and she says she never wears them.

Am I the odd one out here?
    Do you wear them?

I never wear them, I feel like they breed bacteria. I'd just change my pants before I'd wear pantyliners.

Edit: I don't have periods (pill) and have no other issues of that nature, luckily

If I need to, I will. But not as a routine thing. I'd rather just wear fresh underwear. I also exercise a good bit but just change clothes afterwards.

But some people do use them daily. I'm just lucky that I don't need to.

I use them everyday (on fresh knickers). I have really soft skin and if anything starts to rub down there I get a welt. So I have to stay really, really dry. It's grand tho, you rip it off at 4 o'clock and you're still wearing clean knickers. Very handy if you're going to be going out after work or anything.

Don't tell me some people use them just so they don't have to wash their pants?!?

I genuinely thought panty liners were for older ladies with weak bladders. I hate the feeling of pads and stuff so would never consider them at all.

I'd only wear them for spotting. I can see the appeal of wearing them daily, but I wouldn't see the need personally.

I tend to put in a tampon instead of a panty liner but I do wonder if it's not a good idea when I don't have my period.

Am I reading that right that you wear a tampon when you don't have your period?

I wear one if I feel the need but it wouldn't be a regular thing.. They can be handy at times I guess..

Not only is it not a good idea but it is unsafe.

    Read up about TSS.

Few days before and after my period just for safety purposes eg occasional drops that may happen. Otherwise no.
These days you can find ones that are so thin you do not even notice you have them.

Wearing panty liners to keep your knickers dry is like never taking the plastic off your new couch/car seat etc.
    What's the point?

I use them on my period, in case of accidents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,340 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

No. Not even when on my period, since I was about 13. If I'm bleeding, tampons. If I'm not, nothing.

It just seems like yet another completely unnecessary "feminine" product women are sold for no reason.

Obviously if you suffer from stress incontinence or something, that's very different. But I have absolutely no idea why a healthy woman who showers and changes her underwear daily would feel like she has to wear one to feel "fresh" or "clean".

Because not everyone can use tampons, and sometimes if there's just light spotting there is no need for a pad - a liner will do. Also if I've had thrush & used a pessary/cream, it prevents messes.

No. Just no. Please stop doing this. It really isn't good for you!

Really pantyliners shouldn't be worn on a daily basis. As much as they say they are 'breathable' etc they're still not great.

I use them if I'm spotting otherwise no

Ok, let me rephrase as I obviously wasn't quite clear enough: I have no idea why a healthy woman who showers and changes her underwear everyday and has absolutely nothing else going on down there out of the ordinary would feel the need to wear a pantyliner.

Obviously it's her prerogative. Same as it's mine to think "Why???"

As you said, it's her prerogative. I only wear them if there is something funky going on, and I would rather just change my underwear than use liners daily.

Well some people (*possibly me) may need to wear them for (normal) discharge at certain times in their cycle. If they didn't they would have to change their underwear a couple of times a day. Also, when you're pregnant, normal discharge increases too.
(I shower at least once a day, and change my underwear once a day).

You don't have to be an 'older lady' to have a weak bladder :(

The pill Im on means no periods at all so I wear absolutely nothing except gorgeous raunchy knickers - well ok, I just wear normal knickers.

I have days where I change knickers 3 times though, once getting up in the morning, once after the gym shower and then once after a shower that evening (if its a hair wash day - I dont wash it in gym shower). Bit excessive maybe but I like fresh knickers in the morning and after a shower.

I do know that. If you read my post again you will see that I just thought panty liners were an older lady thing.

UI wear them with tampons because there still could be spotting. I don't feel I need them otherwise but I doubt they will kill you if you wear them. Considering how much underwear is polyester galore nowadays I doubt they are that much less breathable than a pair of tight polyester knickers.

I wouldn't wear tampons unnecessary but for panty liners, why not if they make you feel more comfortable. For me shape ware is the work of the devil and yet some women are perfectly happy and comfortable to wear it. So I think we just have different preferences.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,341 ✭✭✭miezekatze

I rarely wear them, but I usually just change my underpants if they don't feel fresh anymore, usually change them twice a day. It's bad enough having to wear stuff like that during my period so I like to avoid them while I'm not on it.

Tight polyester knickers aren't good for you either though

If you need to wear pantyliners then do, but if you have no issues day to day i.e. spotting or discharge, I genuinely don't understand why you would wear them. Do they not begin to smell after a while like pads?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

I wear pantiliners most days. Underwear changed every day. I would have naturally heavy discharge so I just find it keeps me feeling fresh throughout the day. I usually remove it when I get home from work. My bladder can sometimes be weak, often if I've sneezed unexpectedly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,821 ✭✭✭fussyonion

OP here. I think, after reading everyone's replies, that I might stop wearing them
The previous poster made a good point..if you don't have discharge, there's no point wearing them.
And you're right, we go through enough every month what with tampons and pads.
    Thanks for your input everyone!

I'd usually only wear them the day after my period is finished if I don't trust that it's really FULLY finished. :o

Wouldn't wear them on a day to day basis.

I wear them when in the lead up to my period and for a day or 2 afterwards just in case of spotting or anything. Other than that, I'd rather just change my underwear.

Some women just have a lot of discharge at various times of the month, like around ovulation. It's much more convenient to wear a pantyliner than it is to change you underwear, particularly if you're at work or out and about. Or if you're on fertility drugs you could end up needing to change your underwear 5 times a day at particular times of the month. Pantyliners are easier. I wouldn't wear them all the time, and some months I don't need to wear them at all (I have a very irregular cycle and could go months without periods and ovulation) but they're great on the days you do need them. I use them after sex too for any leaks. They serve a purpose. If you don't need them, that's fantastic, but if you do they make things an awful lot more comfortable.

Being on hormonal contraception or not can affect vaginal discharge in a big way. When I was on the pill, I never needed to wear panty-liners, now I'm off all hormonal contraception and things are different down there. I wear them when running, but that's more to do with avoiding camel-toe.

As an aside, I hate the word panty. And I absolutely hate the scented ones.

I am glad I saw this thread then! I didn't know that about the pill and discharge, but that information may come in useful in the future. I am off the pill for the first time in my adult life so things may change!

I don't wear knickers unless I have my period, or if I'm in a blowy uppy dress.

I never wear knickers (period or not) when exercising and I do a lot of exercising. I just wear a tampon and act like the girls in the ads. Rollerblading down mountains and the likes. I wash all my exercisinh gear after one wear.

Never really understood the need for panty liners other than the days before and after your period but each to their own.

The discharge (cervical mucus) is very much related to where you are in your cycle so presumably because the pill essentially stops your cycle you don't get the same cervical mucus.

There's a table here that explains the different stages of cervical mucus.

Depending on how much cervical mucus you produce pantyliners can be very useful. Clearly some people don't need them, but plenty of people do at certain times of the month. It would never have occurred to me that people use them everyday, but perhaps some people feel that they need them all the time.

IMO unless you need to wear them using one every day would just seem like a waste of money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,593 ✭✭✭DoozerT6

I use them for the last couple of days of my period (day and night) when your undies still need some protection but a regular pad is unnecessary. I certainly don't use them every day. Some people use them during holidays to get a second day out of a pair of knickers to save on laundry :D

I could never get into using tampons. Tried them a couple of times, couldn't really get the hang of them and didn't like the 'dragging' sensation of removing them!

Re the tampons, if there's a 'dragging' sensation, the absorbency level is too high, i.e. go for a smaller one.
Re pantyliners, I used to use them from time to time but haven't felt the need in years. A friend of mine used to wear them every day and change them a couple of times a day but that was more of an OCD thing I think.

Any chance you were just removing them too early? They can be uncomfortable to remove if you do so too soon.
I honestly can't imagine not using tampons anymore, I find them alot more comfortable than pads, but it did take me a few tries.

Possibly right about the absorbency, but meh, I've used pads the past 30 years, only another decade or so to go!

I loved tampons but they just don't sit right anymore since I had a baby. :( So I'm stuck using yucky pads most of the time.

Keep meaning to try the mooncup though!

I wear them sometimes, I can have quite heavy discharge that can really soak my underwear and that feels just gross, so yeah, pantyliners are really needed sometimes.

I don't wear them. I don't get periods because of my pill, and I don't get discharge.

If I'm out doing something that'll get me sweaty, I'll change undies after. I usually change them in the morning and again in the evening anyway.

Also, I only wear thongs/gstrings because I find normal knickers and boxers or French knickers horribly uncomfortable, so a liner wouldn't even fit anyway!

still laugh at picking up a pair of undies in tescos and when i got home they were thongs i was like im so over them... Have to say thanks i never knew this about the discharge differances when as such in a normal cycle.. I just came off the pill after years just to give the body a break and i am having some odd days where im like wtf is going on.. I do like to use liners, they just make me feel a lot safer or something. But not all the time i like to wear them for if i am travelling anywhere like plane journeys or something sounds odd i suppose but just makes me feel fresher..

As in on heavy discharge days similar to what some others have been describing. I guess I'll switch to pantyliners. I hate pads but maybe liners are less annoying!
