Grange's April 2016 summary

Extremely wet and cool but sunny.

Rainfall: Second wettest April in my records.
I recorded a rainfall total of 104.0mm (267% of the LTA) for the month of April and it is officially my second wettest April on record behind only 2012. This high total was largely influenced by two very wet days, the 2nd and 11th. The 11th was my second wettest April day on record after only the 25th in 2012. It recorded a fall of 39.2mm (exactly the average for the whole month of April here). The 2nd recorded 19.5mm. In contrast, there was no other day during the month when I recorded 10mm or more despite the high total. From the 16th-24th, there was a lengthy dry spell - I recorded only 0.2mm during this period (which was recorded only on the 18th) and it was the longest April dry spell since 2011 (which was from the 14th-May 4th). Though being extremely wet at the end of the day, April 2016 did not break any rainfall records.

Temperature: Coldest April since 2013.
April 2016 recorded a mean temperature of 6.6c (-1.6c below the LTA). It was my coldest April since 2013. It was generally colder than normal throughout the month with the exceptions of the 13th and 20th (only days with above average temperatures). This was my lowest number of days with above average temperatures in April in my records (even 2013 recorded more). The 9th was my coldest April day since 2013 also with a maximum of only 7.3c. My maximum was 16.1c on the 20th - in contrast to 20.1c on the 22nd in April 2015 and it was a pretty average maximum for April but still the lowest since 1989. On the 10th, I recorded a minimum of -2.6c and it was my lowest April minimum since 2013. Despite all the colder than normal conditions, April 2016 wasn't remarkably cold, especially in contrast with 1989, 1998 and 2013.

Sunshine: Sunnier than normal but still dullest April since 1992.
I recorded a sunshine total of 169 hours (116% of the LTA) but it was still my dullest April since 1992 despite being sunnier than normal. This April equally (2012 also recorded 169 hours) contrasts with recent Aprils that have had much more sunshine especially 2015 which recorded 244 hours and was my sunniest April on record. The second half was much sunnier than the first with 110 hours and 59 hours respectively. I recorded only 4 days with 10 hours or more of sunshine, my lowest for April since 1992. April wasn't remarkable at all for sunshine though at the end of the day.

April 2016 was a very poor month but it wasn't in any way remarkable.
