you have to pay to bump the advert early but after 30 days they give you €1 credit to bump the advert and theres a time limit

i dont think this is the end for adverts but it will clear some of the shite that has stayed listed with people not even checking their accounts or logging in for months

    The internet isn’t for everyone

They sent me a notification yesterday saying 'You can now bump your ads', clicked in thinking it was past the 30 days and I was getting a free bump. But it was listed as a paid bump which is pretty stupid sending me a notification for, I knew I could pay at any given time.

I did buy a couple of things off it in the last few weeks and both sellers had 50+ positive feedback and were sound out. It does still have that advantage over Donedeal in that you can see their feedback and have a fair idea you are not dealing with some gobshite or time waster.

It comes up as a paid bump but they give you the credit, I’ve done four bumps this week and all came up €1 but the credit is there to cover the cost

I find it hard to sell things on it now. They've allowed "private" sellers with thousands of ads. I think those genuine private sellers are lost in the crowd. Ads get very few views.

Then buying is difficult. I've had to pull back from a few sales because I just didn't get a good vibe from the seller. This isn't the sites fault of course.

People with a good history are fine but it reduces the pool of people to trade with enormously.

A lot of the stuff I might have previously sold, goes straight to recycling now. It's no longer worth the hassle. Maybe it's just people don't want used stuff any more.

COVID obviously must have reduced people's trading too.

Tbh I came across several blatant fraud advertising on both sites ( reported obviously)

one example was a pretend bricks n mortar phone shop purported to be based in Letterkenny Donegal

got suspicious and checked address no such shop, as I lived 18 miles away for 20 years I had a family member check and also check local large paper ( Derry journal)

no adds no sign of shop etc

reported same to Adverts.ie and questioned publicly the 2 guys on site selling the phones etc and one took his adds down( Indian guy living here and allowed his details to be used by other Indian scammer’s)

other add stayed up - contacted Adverts.ie again and add was still up a week later

    not good enough

Adverts are very poor at following up when you report stuff that is reported.

I think its funny that they have a list or rules like no posted phone numbers and they have a list of forbidden items too, All the ads have to get approved before they get published and the amount of stuff that gets approved by them that is in contradiction to their rules are rediculus

Is the option to pay by phone to bump an ad broken for anyone else?

Anyone able to check this for me? Would be appreciated, thanks

Can you appeal negative feedback on Adverts? I had to postpone collecting something due to a family bereavement ( I did contact the seller via message and text explaining the situation). No response to either and 3 days later I get negative feedback.

I still use it for both selling and buying. For high value items I tend to use both DD and Adverts. It's strange as I nearly always get a better response on DD, even though my ads get loads more views and saves on Adverts. There are pros and cons for both. DD has no seller/buyer feedback, and the lack of sub categories (compared to Adverts) is bad. Adverts technical response times are terrible. I had a withdraw an ad for 5 days whilst I waited for comments to be removed by a troll user!

Used adverts in the past and it was good for finding bargains or getting out of a hole if you needed something but we're strapped for cash.

But now it's all shops or people selling cheap or dodgy goods ie The amount of people selling genuine high quality beds and mattresses for next to nothing.

Then you have people who give a vague title to their ad, don't give a description, or have a picture off Google rather than of the actual item.

I find the shops quite useful on adverts, often I'm looking for some cheap Chinese electronic components that Irish sellers can get to me the next day.

I also price items to sell from the start, if you try to charge even 10% above the market rate for a popular item you will be tortured by tyre kickers.

I now usually search within my area or 2km search to check for items before broadening the search.

Support confirmed a bug in the app when trying to pay with mobile credit to bump an ad. Will be fixed in next update apparently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭One More Toy

Not fixed yet, not holding my breath

Are they trying to kill off the platform with the bump fees?

Also, when I go to look at my feedback, I'm stuck in an endless loop for about 20 feedbacks received (on the app)

Time to put childish things aside.

Should/can you report someone you suspect of consistently dealing in stolen property on Adverts, even if you don't have any actual proof that what they're selling has been stolen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,880 ✭✭✭corks finest

I did and they were pretty useless tbh

same bogus seller had different adds / different profiles etc

reported it but we’re still active over a week later

I publicly called the scammer out

after receiving a DM and publishing it

turns out he was an Indian based here letting his bank be used etc

The people I'm worried about are from much closer to home. I first became aware of them two years ago. It's ridiculous how many 'shed clearouts' one account can have, though they do change their location.

It's frustrating to me that they're brazenly selling stolen stuff on Adverts without fear of repercussion. This kind of activity is not a victimless crime.

That is a interweb link to adverts not the guardai

  • Moderators Posts: 6,952 ✭✭✭Spocker

Thats correct, and it you read it, the Adverts support team would also say "go to the Gardai" - it's not up to Adverts, or any one else on the internet, to decide if something is stolen or not

I have been posting on Adverts since 2014. I would say that two out of every three people that I have had to deal with were absolute arseholes.

People don't read the ads properly before making an offer. I don't think that I have ever made a sale from someone who offered €1 for "discussion purposes". These people usually want to be your friend and they think that you will knock 70% off the price of the item because they think they are now your friend.

I had one woman who wanted to meet me in a location miles from where I live, to inspect a €4 item with the option of not proceeding if it did not suit. I had another woman who wanted to call to my house and browse through the items I had for sale because she thought I had some interesting items.

I have been abused from on high by some people because I left deserved negative feedback for them. Here is a flavour..

" as with you pushy sales tactics are not something I can adhere to... I took 24 to reply to an offer I made. god forbid I wasn't waiting by my computer to send a reply to you, the centre of my universe...and yes I keep mentioning your arrogance as every message you send me is absolutely drenched in your self absorbed arrogance .. you do realise that an offer is not a transaction , that this is purely an online forum and you do realise that with the 100s of transactions you have made that you lawfully owe tax and revenue quite a substantial amount. no shove that up your arrogant pipe and if you continue to"

    and

"your an arrogant piece of crap. so keep your items and your arrogance and send them onto someone else . goodnight"

This can be fun too though. 😂

I have also met some really interesting and lovely people on Adverts. This is the reason why I continue to do it.

I still like adverts. Seems to get less traffic these days but never had a truly bad experience.

You get a bit of messing around with people seemingly all eager to buy and it goes to PM and then you never hear from them again. Stuff can be slow to sell might have to wait a few months even but just leave it sit eventually someone will want just that thing.
