Point is you'll get away with many things in this country but you won't get away with paying no tv licence...... pathetic isn't it.

I guess at least some will be chuffed that if she is up in court again, it won't be with no jail time served for X number of convictions.

The fact of the matter is many people who were complicit in bringing the country to its knees have not spent a day in jail. Just think about it....

Pathetic isn't it when you see cases like this.

Not one person in the history of the state has ever been sent to jail for not paying their TV licence and they never will be.

Licence fee should be removed. There should be no state funded tv whatsoever

Because tv is a basic right like water and electricity and food and paying for it is a breach of human rights.

Law is optional and you get to choose which ones to obey and which not to.

I'd click the link but it's to The Liberal.

That rag website is written by people who would struggle to pass the Junior Cert pass paper in English.

Also - they're wildly conservative and wouldn't even acknowledge the passing of the marriage referendum. Morons!

It's up to 1 in 2 people now

1 in 2 people born after 1960 in the UK will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime

Most people would be embarrassed if this happened to them. She had an agenda from the start. She spent a few hours in a holding cell and went to the only website that would listen to her.

    From 4fm Facebook
Suzanne would like to thank all those who offered to pay for the fine for her but said she can't accept the money. She said the support however will help her to walk into the prison with her head held high

Wasn't there a dj on 4fm called Suzanne Kane? Hardly the same person?

Can't afford a TV license? Then you can't afford to have a TV.

Same as having a car and not taxing it.

Same as taking a train and not buying a ticket.

No sympathy for her. They should have flogged the TV and let the kids watch stuff on the laptop. Students the world over do just that every bloody day.

Just watch now, when everyone goes mad making excuses for her and crying OUTRAGE while ignoring the fact that the license is a tax and she was caught dodging it while the rest of us pay our dues.

It's the likes of these eejits who expose themselves to prosecution (instead of ditching the telly) who screw everyone else. She's old enough to remember the 1980's in Ireland when plenty of people didn't have a telly because times were tough and they couldn't afford one.

All her own, and her husbands making.

Compassion doesn't pay for public services.

She can pay her way like the rest of us, or get rid of the telly when the license is up.

They have a choice. It's no secret that if you have a telly, you should have a license.

Left out of work with cancer and fallen on hard times. Its a very common occurrence. Hopefully you never experience it.

In this case I doubt the TV licence is high up on her priorities. It can happen. Cop onto yourself and show some compassion.

If she's that hard up she could probably do with flogging the TV to put an extra few quid in her pocket.

Shouldn't have brought it on herself then. She could have bought TV licence stamps if she couldn't afford the full whack.
She'd have had months and months if not years of warnings and even after getting the summons could have gone to court with a licence and saved the taxpayer thousands.
Break the law,get caught, pay the penalty. Don't see what the issue is?

I don't see why the cancer bit has to be brought into it, she had a TV and like it or not the law of the land says we must have a license.

For real or a troll? Not speaking about this particular case but what if its one of her few remaining enjoyments a recovering cancer victim has with little money in their pockets would you still expect them to sell the tv to pay the licence?

I'd like to think the state is human enough to turn a blind eye in exceptional cases or delay the payment until person is back to full health.

You're asking if she should sell the TV to pay for a TV licence and wondering if I'm a troll?

Just sounds like she could do with a few quid, flog the TV.

I've had 3 close relatives die of cancer including 2 grandparents who still managed to get their TV license stamps when they were ill. No time for anyone using cancer as an excuse for dodging paying a bill they OPTED to have.

A license to watch a ****ing TV. A black box with pixels on it. Say it back to yourself and listen to how absurd it sounds. People aren't causing wear and tear on irish infrastructure by using a TV and not giving money to RTE.

How do you think RTE is funded?

I thought that in Ireland the TV licence is a relatively new thing. I thought that in the 80's there was no TV tax. Anyhow RTE is a joke, quite how they expect people to have a TV and watch their poor programmes and by happy to pay for them for it is beyond me when there are so many other foriegn channels that don't take a penny of this tax. More people should take a stand and refuse to pay it. The system is outdated. RTE should be encrypted with a a viewing card for those who want to pay for it. If its that great then there will no shortage of paying viewers won't there?....

It was the 60s and prior to that you needed a wireless receiver licence.

Blah blah RTE drivel blah blah.

You don't pay for a TV license to watch RTE.

You pay a TV license to have a TV.

Watch what you want but if that's via a TV, you need a license.

Everything else, from cancer to Tubridy's salary has NOTHING to do with whether or not you are legally obligated to pay for the license.

It's about 3 quid a week, not exactly going to break the bank to pay it.

Anyone who doesn't pay it is getting a service the rest of us have to pay for so I'm glad they get caught.

A rather obvious answer. Tell me ...

What's the difference between a person who owns no TV (therefore exempting themselves from a license obligation) and someone who uses their TV for purposes strictly unrelated to consuming RTE content ?

It's kind of like being told you will.be taxing a car that will just sit in a driveway for its lifespan.

The logic is it supports public service broadcasting across all the Irish networks.

Why are you presuming Cancer patients are poor?

My grandmother died from Leukemia and my uncle is still recovering, neither had to stop paying their TV license fees.

And as has been pointed out. You dont get dragged from the sitting room to jail

You get a call at the door

    you get a written letter

    you get a warning

    you get a summons

    you get a fine

    you go to jail

Exctly how manu times should people be allowed ignore the law and suit themselves before action is taken? Presumable as shes poor, we shouldnt deducat at source and as shes sick she cant do community service so hey, **** it.Away with ya and by the way, you are now immune from prosecution for no reason other than a completely irelevent illness.

Licence fee should be removed. There should be no state funded tv whatsoever

I agree. In the UK the license fee goes to the BBC who have no commercials. The RTE player and the RTE channels are bombarded and infested with commercials. I think the advertisers should expect a huge increase in their fees for advertising for the profit they make off it. And ditch the licences fee completely.
