Looks like hidden channel 12 is now testing according to digitalbitrate.com at the moment (don't have access to saorview). This may be the red button feed

Confirmed on Saorview website that TG4 will be using red button on Saturday for rugby Pro 12 coverage

Yes, channel 12 has 2rn test card in SD and channel 14 is still in HD .

Earlier according to digitalbitrate.com it was in HD which had a still of an ad (looked like one for AXA). Channel 12 and 15 have been showing 2rn test cards in sd for a long while

According to the graphs it appears that channel 12 has been alternating between SD and HD.

Does Freeview in the UK have as much political interference? Surely the company should be able to do pretty much whatever they want once it's within their charter.

There is a good question. Freeview and Freesat are not tied politically to anything but the BBC has been under attack from Tories for some time. RTE has been under attack from various politicians (and certain clergymen) for the last 50 years.

    What is new about that?

AFAIK Freeview is clear from any direct political interference and as you say Tories do criticise BBC freely but by and large Freeview has been allowed to develop without politicians interfering in that development. Cannot remember any major issue in last 14 years re Freeview that politicians have made political capital out of.

Without wanting to go off topic - Freesat is owned by BBC & ITV

    From Saorview

"TG4 announces interactive Red Button service

This Saturday, TG4 goes interactive with the first use of the Saorview Red Button feature. The broadcaster will be using the Red Button option on Saorview to broadcast the Guinness Pro 12 Rugby match between Connacht and Opsreys with coverage starting from 7pm. The match will be broadcast live from the Galway Sportsground as part of the station’s Rugbaí Beo series and it will be available via the Red Button on Saorview during TG4’s coverage of the Election 2016 count.

Viewers watching TG4 on a Saorview Approved box or TV will be able to access Rugbaí Beo by pressing the Red Button on the remote control for their Saorview box or TV when the icon appears on screen."

Perhaps TG4 and TV3 could share red button functionality for live sports events rather than putting both full time in HD if theres bandwidth or cost issues for them.

Wonder will this be timer recordable on a PVR? With BBC red button on Freeview you could timer record from 601. Is this possible with TG4? Is there another channel that pressing the red button on TG4 will automatically bring you to?

I wonder will red button only work on Saorview approved boxes / TV's?

Does red button work on FTA boxes on satellite channels? eg Ferguson Ariva etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,327 ✭✭✭✭Tony

FTA boxes don't have the red button feature bu if you scan at the time of the broadcast you can view the channel.

Did a retune on my Sony TV. Theres a blank carrier now being stored at channel 22. Also seems to be an MHEG generated 2rn logo. Is this the red button channel for Saturday?

No, that was the Oireachtas TV test. Not sure why it's still unhidden.

No that was previously Oireachtas channel.
Guessing but Red Button stream most lightly to appear on one of the other hidden test channels on mux2 (same mux as RTE1/UTVIrl):-
    lcn 12 2102
    lcn 14 2104
    lcn 15 2105

PS lcn 14 tested TG4 in HD for a short period last week.

Cheers. Is that the one currently showing the rolling videos of Dublin & Galway? Oddly enough I can find and store it on one TV in the house with a manual tune, but another TV won't find it.

    YES.
If the TV that can't manually tune test channels is Saorview approved, manually change to channel 14 ie. type number 14 on remote to select channel.

Great. Our sleuthing around Saorview from the OP has produced something positive in the end. :)

This is excellent news. You have to wonder what type of events are to be available on the service in the long term.

Tony says that the latest from Saorview is that "Development of the Connect box is at an advanced stage" but more importantly that the "Boxes will be competitively priced at a level that will be appealing to consumers who want to upgrade "
    (see http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057041188&page=11)

Can we believe the competitively priced bit? or is it marketing flimflam.

It still is for the Oireachtas channel but as it's still in test mode awaiting technical and regulatory approval and not carrying the channel's replay broadcast schedule during the election recess, they have a 2rn MHEG-5 generated caption in its place. We assume it'll return on March 10th.
Live broadcasts will recommence on 10th March 2016

Please note: All times are indicative and may be subject to change depending on the schedules of the Houses of the Oireachtas. At other times a replay of recent events in the Houses of the Oireachtas will be broadcast.

    Replay Broadcast Schedule

This week you can view a replay of recent events in the Houses of the Oireachtas on eir Vision channel 504, Virgin Media channel 207 (formerly UPC) and Sky Ch 574

Each week there are a selection of programmes that are scheduled to be replayed after the business of the Houses of the Oireachtas has adjourned. This schedule will change from time to time and is dependent on the availability and duration of programmes

Could the reason this is being introduced on TG4 lie in the difficulty RTE have with schedules on RTE having to be micromanaged by the Minister?

They cannot move children's programmes from RTE 2 onto the dedicated children's channel, and they cannot do anything with RTE NN without full analysis and approval of the BAI and final sanction by the Minister. Nor can the run their fourth channel in any commercial way, nor are they allowed RTE Plus/3.

Unfortunately the TG4 Red button service won't be available on Saorsat today.
Hopefully it is a success and I believe the service will be on Saorsat and other platforms in the future.

Anyone with a TV set to UK rather than Ireland in its set-up menu know which channel no.(LCN) the red button on TG4 will take you to and what is the name given to that channel?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 19,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

Looks like LCN 24 is the likely channel - the HD stream ha moved from 14 to 24.
