I sometimes think those who were 'abducted' suffered some form of child abuse and have fabricated the alien story as a way of coping.

I believe that they truly believe they were abducted, however their alien story has simply replaced the actual story. Plausible?

I could not possibly say. But since you mention it, Santa's elves are normally described as short, childlike creatures. Aliens are frequently described as short, childlike creatures. They have a spaceship that can travel at high speed. We know Santa needs to cover huge distances in a single day. Perhaps he's upgraded from a sleigh, or maybe that was just a cover story all along.
