Sad to hear for the staff. I mean I don't buy as many films as I used to but in recent times I got the 3D steelbook of Jurassic World there and Mission Impossible Rogue Nation. I usually just buy some of my favourite films these days.

Are we sure they will still honour gift cards? I still have about €9 from one I received at Christmas.

I wouldn't think so. Unsecured creditor, you're bottom of the list.

What is a CEX ? is it a Cash Exchange shop where you can buy stuff but more importantly they may offer you a knock down price for something you are trading in as well ?

Fair play if you caught them out on something :) I'd say that's rare. There's a couple of them in my locality and they don't seem to offer particularly good value to buyers at least.

As above, they offer fairly decent trade in on games. Much better than Gamestop or anywhere else. A friend of mine buys a game every month or so, finishes it, goes and trades it in against something else, repeat. Worked it out as being much cheaper than renting within the same timeframes involved.

They're also fantastic for older stuff and you can check which stores have stock of what and get it delivered if you wish.

Honestly, I can't really fault them.

Blu rays always wins hands down for quilty as now point having the fancy TV if your going to download and watch bad sub 720P rips on them ;)
1080P X265 codec would be up there with Blu Ray, encoding is coming on in leaps & bounds.

If you don't believe me do a side by side Blu Ray vs X265 rip & tell me the difference.

You can get some good 1080p rips now alright and not huge sizes but would still have compressed audio. So that would matter to those who have a proper 5.1 setup.

But either way, this is a dying business model, download speeds are only getting faster and faster. Downloading/streaming 4k with uncompressed audio is not a million miles away. Sad for the staff there but I am sure they know this was on the cards for quite some time.

A proper blu ray rip is like 25GB + if you also wont the 5.1 DTS sound as well if you have the speaker set up. Not these fake 1.4GB 1080P downloads ;)

Having watched Netflix 4k, Blu rays and full HD downloads.

Get yourself a 1tb+ external hard drive and you will have plenty of space for 20gb+ downloads

    Just download blueray copies, no?

Not up to the same quality. Was really taken aback watching Everest at the weekend at the quality of Blueray in comparison. Then got to thinking how many films have I enjoyed less due to inferior picture over the last few years.

I went into xtravision recently, I'd scratched my copy of GTA IV. A secondhand copy was 39.99. I left it and bought it the following day in Gamestop for €15. Even browsing dvds and bluray their prices were off the wall in comparison to other bricks and mortar stores. With a different strategy I'm sure they could have survived but it obviously suits somebody to let it go rather than just 'survive'

Do you think 1080p BluRays are better than Netflix 4K streams?

Have seen one or two reviews on YouTube saying similar. But I guess it's kind of expected, really. At least 4K BluRays are on the way anyway. Finally people will have some bit of a reason to get a 4K TV since it'll actually be able to be put to use.

Both the Xtravision and the HMV in Galway City are closing down. Maybe it was just that particular HMV was doing badly but if so surely they'd move stock to another store instead of liquidating it?

I do strongly think Blu rays are better then any Netflix 4K i have watched so far the only good ones i seen was Master of None everything else was meh and just looked like i was watching full HD.

As i think Netflix is like 15MB per sec for 4K and a blu ray is like 25MB i am not sure of this but i cant wait for 4K Blu rays myself as cant wait to go OMG at the picture for the 1st time.

The Barrister at the high court today included that any vouchers would be honoured.

I imagine they'll either be usable like-for-like in HMV or be valid during liquidation sales. Once Xtravision are gone, the vouchers will be too. You won't be able to cash them in.

Gift Vouchers can be redeemed in HMV, there won't be liquidation sales as of today Xtra Vision stores have closed their doors and won't be re-opening them. Stock will be passed either to HMV stores, warehouses or returned to suppliers.

What about the combined Xtravision/HMV stores?

It's just the HMV Stores that are staying opened. The Combined stores were Xtra-Visions with a bit of HMV branding in it to help breath new life into the stores.

Thanks for the confirmation guys. I guess it's just a matter of where the closest HMV store will be.

4k netflix is compressed, so blu ray will be better quality... just lower resolution

300 years ago there were sword makers everywhere. They went out of fashion, just like buying cds and renting dvds.

Having worked in Xtravision 11-12 years ago, and seeing how much money they took in, none of it went into planning.
They could have done so much to improve their services down through the years. But they didn't.

Zero sympathy for the company. Shame for the staff in smaller towns who's stores are closed overnight.

Haven't been into an xtravision in 10 years, I'd say. I still owe about €20 in late fees...

The one on Kilkenny is more a HMV store with Xtra Vision added on...very curious as to how that one will fare.
First we had Virgin, that became Zavvi...they went bust and closed. HMV came along. They went busy and closed...
Then Xtra vision bought the remnants of the HMV brand and opened a new store...now that's looking shaky

According to the HMV/Xtravision Kilkenny's twitter page they are shut too. I'd say the other HMV stores will be gone pretty soon too. Shame!
