Student Paying €25 Return x5 Days Of College A Week

So i was wondering as a friend of mine was paying a ridiculous €125 a week to travel up and down a week as theres no accommodation here up in cork. Shes a student and lives approx 60km from her college, she gets the student bus ticket every morning but says its only a discount of a few €€'s from the adult return price.

As for as the student leap card, she can't make much savings as she doesn't live in the green zone nor the red zone which is an added expense for her, as she does'nt live in the city/ suburbs only down west!

Would appreciate all suggestions as she spends an hefty amount of €125 a week!

If she is living at home isn't she saving overall anyway even with the travel costs ? Not that it sounds fun...

Your friend is either lying or lazy.

She genuinely is paying that and works her ass off to earn that amount but she'll be driving soon..

Where is she travelling from? Do they do a 10 journey ticket?

How do you go up to Cork?
    Does she live offshore?

Probably depends where she is coming from, and maybe I'm missing it, but you don't seem to have provided this?

I looked up Bus Eireann and from Kinsale to Cork, it should cost about €47 for a student, 10 journeys.

Pretty sure the Kinsale reference was a joke by another poster. After all, Kinsale to Cork is not €25 return.

Motorbike might be an option. I live 30km from college and commute on a 500cc bike each day. Costs me about 17 quid a week.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,707 ✭✭✭whatismyname

I find it hard to believe there's not a cheaper option on public transport (but can't know without knowing where she's coming from), but https://www.carsharing.ie/ might me worth checking out if not.

Well it's 60km down west from Cork

I spend about €80.50 a week going from Fermoy to CIT on public transport so depending on where she's coming from I'd believe it. Bus Eireann's regional services are a rip off and rarely reliable either. Their city bus is actually quite good though!

    but still
Clonakilty for example is €20.42 for a day return online, so a little more in cash from the driver.
A 10 journey ticket on the other hand is only €64.60

a 10 journey Fermoy-cork is 57.00, but thanks anyhow for keeping the irish transport system well funded by voluntarily paying more

A student 10 journey ticket from Dungarvan to Cork (75Km) is €70.50. Check it out on the Bus Eireann fare checker. Maybe she can save some of her ass.

Without knowing where she is travelling up or down from, or where in Cork she is travelling to, no one can give you decent advice. Genuinely.

You're also forgetting about the second bus you'd have to get from cork city to CIT, I can't always afford the 10 journey ticket as with food and bills I don't always have that much money on me in one go. With the ten journey ticket you'd save roughly 8 Euro a week on that.

Thanks for jumping to numerous conclusions and voluntarily making yourself look like a smartarse though!

Yeah when she gets dropped of in the city, she has to get a bus to CIT, and pay €2.10 when she finish's her day she pays another €2.10 to get the bus into the city for the bus home...
Even if she tops up her student leap card for the €2.10 journeys in and out a day she'd only save about €0.80 a day

Bantry, and she goes to UCC

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 31,117 ✭✭✭✭snubbleste

Bantry is more than 60km from UCC
    ~80km
And surely the bus would go past UCC inbound & outbound

and even then a return is €13 and a 10 journey is €63

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,707 ✭✭✭whatismyname

Bantry, and she goes to UCC

€62.70 for a ten journey student ticket from Bantry to Cork, which appears to stop at UCC (Western Road).

    Timetable at http://www.buseireann.ie/timetables/1425903022-236.pdf

Fares can be checked at homepage of Bus Eireann site.

I used spend a lot of money in buses when going to C.I.T. I used generally get the bus in Mitchelstown/Fermoy at around 7:10 in the morning and returning in the evening.
The only way I found to make a saving was either to walk to C.I.T in the morning or walk back into the city in the afternoon.

Assuming 40 weeks in the college year that is €5000 per year on public transport. There must be plenty of options that are better than that.
Moped been the most practical one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭9de5q7tsr8u2im

hardly going to be driving a moped, especially shes a girl haha, but yeah the bus passes through ucc and usually gets off there

According to the opening post, they pay €25 return or €125 per week.

Yet on Bus Eireann site adult return fare Bantry - Cork is €14 and student return €12.83....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,921 ✭✭✭munchkin_utd

Bantry, and she goes to UCC
    and 29 posts later..........
finally info that might help in giving a practical tip.

    still
    a red zone monthly is €66.80, so (x12 /52) = €15 per week
    A 10 journey Bantry-Cork is €80.75
    Total, 95, a saving of €30 per week or €120 per 4weeks

    Ten single journeys.

Weekly 10 Journey Tickets - valid for 10 journeys as specified for a period of seven consecutive days inclusive of date of issue and including Sundays, e.g. a weekly ticket issued on Tuesday is valid up to and including the following Monday.

She needs to buy a ten day weekly ticket. If she can she should buy the ticket online as there is a discount as far as I know buying online. She should also contact bus eireann (maybe the help desk in the bus station) and see if she could have the stop near CIT as her end point on her ticket rather than Parnell Place. This might cover her on the City bus.

She should also contact Student Services in CIT and UCC to see if there is anyone driving from Bantry each morning and evening and would take someone in exchange for petrol money. Might be worth sticking a note up asking the same on notices boards in Supermarkets in her home town or in a local newspaper as well.
