I remember enjoying Nowhere in Africa, about a Jewish family who move to Kenya to escape the nazis.

Shooting Dogs is another good one about Rwanda.

Tsotsi is also worth a look.

    Heart of Darkness

Based on the original novel set in the Congo and not the documentary Hearts of Darkness based on Apocalypse Now which was based on original novel but set in Vietnam.

"Johnny mad dog" very similar to "Beasts of no nation"
Johnny Mad Dog is a 2008 French/Liberian film directed by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, and starring Christopher Minie, Daisy Victoria Vandy, Dagbeh Tweh, Barry Chernoh, Mohammed Sesay and Joseph Duo. The film is based on the novel Johnny Chien Méchant (2002) by the Congolese author Emmanuel Dongala

The Naked Prey (1965): white hunter becomes the prey for some natives in Africa and must hot foot it to safety. Essentially just a single chase for the whole movie, and mostly dialogue free. Very well made, and doesn't patronise the natives either.

If you're into zombie movies, there was an interesting one called 'The Dead' came out a few years ago, set in rural Africa. A bit different to the norm of the genre.

    Shaft in Africa.

Can't vouch for quality, but it definitely delivers on the promise of the title.

Lord of War. He spends a good bit of time in Liberia or Sierra Leone.

    Shake Hands with the Devil.

I also like the vice documentary "Africa's Cowboy Capitalists".

Whereabouts are you traveling by the way?

Not a movie but a short TV Show (based on the book series) but The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency is the best and most true depiction that I've ever seen of Botswana - the people and the place.

The film Zulu is about the Battle of Rorke's Drift; I've been to the actual battle site, which isn't as picturesque as the location used in the movie. The real place is pretty flat, while the movie was shot in the foothills of the Drakensberg about 200km away.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

How was Ethiopia? I love Ethiopian food. Tried to get there before but the land border between Kenya and Ethiopia was closed to whiteys due to bandits or something, and the flights were too expensive.

What kind of volunteer work were you doing? Please tell me you're a doctor or something and you weren't just painting walls or "teaching" kids!

I watched Timbuktu last night. Beautifully shot, simple but effective plot and right up to date in terms of current events.

    It's definitely worth a watch.

I wouldn't recommend this one. It's almost a snuff film in some scenes. Also, the directors were said to have paid the Africans to do the crazy stuff you see on camera.
