    Grange's January 2016 summary

Very wet, sunny and mild - what a strange combination for a Winter month!

Rainfall: Second wettest January on record
January was quite a wet month overall and it became my second wettest January on record with 112.0mm, 189% of the LTA behind 2014 which recorded 129.4mm, 219% of the LTA. I had many wet days with 7 completely dry days, well below average and was my lowest for January since 2014 also. I recorded 19.8mm on the 5th as my highest daily fall with a close quarter of 17.9mm on the 9th, just a few days later. I also recorded falls of 10mm or more on the 1st, during Nor'easter Jonas on the 26th and Storm Gertrude on the 29th. It was my second wettest New Year's Day on record after 2014 but with only 10.1mm - considering I haven't had much wet days on this occasion. My longest period without any rainfall was 3 days from Thursday 14th - Saturday 16th, my shortest dry interlude in January also since 2014. Overall, January did not completely smash any rainfall records despite being the second wettest on record.

    Temperature: Mildest January since 2002
I recorded a mean temperature of 5.3c, +1.3c above the LTA for January 2016 as a whole and it was my mildest January since 2002. January was literally split into three different periods, the mild and wet period from the 1st - 6th, the cold and mostly dry period from the 7th - 16th (excluding the 9th) and the exceptionally mild and wet period from the 17th - 31st. From the 1st - 6th, my mean temperature was 5.1c, +1.1c above the LTA, so it started off relatively mild but not exceptionally with a maximum of 9.3c on New Year's Day during this period. From the 7th - 16th, it became much colder with a mean temperature of 0.8c, -3.2c below the LTA and was my coldest weather since March 2013. My maximum was only 6.6c on the 9th and I recorded a minimum of -6.2c on the night of the 15th into the 16th, my lowest for any month since December 2010 and for January also since 2010. However, this cold spell was soon replaced by a much warmer but unseasonably mild period of weather from the 17th - 31st (excluding the 30th which was a colder day) with a mean temperature of 8.2c, +4.2c above the LTA. However, the two warm periods marked off the cold spell and January was warmer than normal overall. I recorded my January maximum on the 24th with 15.1c, which was the highest for January since 1998 and was my fourth highest on record. What was remarkable though is the minimum temperatures on the nights of the 23rd and 24th which both smashed records. I recorded a minimum temperature of 12.6c on the morning of the 24th which was even higher than the daytime maximum temperature of the 23rd and was my highest on record. The following morning recorded a minimum temperature of 12.1c which itself became the second highest on record. Despite being largely warm overall, I did not record at least 10c until the 21st, longer than 2010 which took up to the 15th to get that mark. Overall, January 2016 was very remarkable temperature wise.

    Sunshine: Sunniest January since 2010
I recorded a sunshine total of 75 hours, 183% of the LTA for January 2016, my highest since 2010. There was quite a division between sunshine in January as the first half was much sunnier than the second half with 49 hours and 26 hours respectively. It was generally my sunniest start to January on record beating 2010. I recorded two days with 6 hours or more with 6.2 hours of sunshine on both the 15th and 22nd which were my sunniest January days since 2010 also. Overall, I recorded 3 completely dull days, below average though it felt very dull at times during the second half. On those days that seemed very dull, I recorded around 0.2 - 0.9 hours of sunshine and I don't count them as completely dull days (0.0 hours). I recorded 14 very sunny days (days with 3 hours or more of sunshine), exceptionally high for January and nearly equalling 2015 which itself remains the record for most very sunny days. January overall was a bit interesting sunshine wise.

It's just mad how that is. I remember many of the sunny days last month with the 22nd in particular comes to mind!

The 22nd was a remarkable January day. It was very mild (and very Summer like!!!) with plenty of sunshine also (6.2 hours). It was better than last Summer at least I can say that.
