An update to the various previous bargain alerts from skydrive/onedrive.

For any onedrive users who have reserved free space with microsoft- this is a heads up for a change MS has introduced to remove most of the free space they gave out - and the workaround to keep it.

MS are taking back most the free space they previously gave after jan Unless you click on the link below and say you want to keep it...

Just to confirm, if I click the link, I will keep what ever amount of free storage I have?
Not just the 30gb, but the other 100gb that I got free too?

No, only the 15GB, as the 100's of GB you would have gotten would be only for a year or so. I have 226GB free atm!

Does usage of onedrive have any effect on the gmail allocation?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,933 ✭✭✭✭GBX

I have 225GB. 200 I think as part of the Dropbox deal.

I rarely use cloud storage but agree it's nice to have. I think I have the most free from box, 50gb. Then Onedrive, 29.9. Then the usual free offers from the rest. Google photos is fantastic for the unlimited high definition back ups! What do people be backing up to use up such huge amounts?

There is an interesting line on a blog post they made on the matter - another sweetener:

If I'm reading this correctly - If you are using over 5G - you can get 1 TB free for a year :)

"If you are using more than 5 GB of free storage, you will continue to have access to all files for at least 12 months after these changes go into effect in early 2016. In addition, you can redeem a free one-year Office 365 Personal subscription (credit card required), which includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage."

Onedrive is Microsoft, you may be thinking of Google Drive.

Microsoft said they had people backing up several years of their "downloads" aka torrents. They had people backing up massive amounts of CCTV footage

TBH I understand limiting the users to 1TB. That's still a lot of storage! Cutting off the allowances for free users and anyone under 1TB is unfair though, it's like they're punishing everyone for the greed of a few!

So basically you have no expectation of privacy as Microsoft will be thumbing through your files.

I, for one, will be encrypting my collection of German hardcore pornography.

I have 240 GB. This is the breakdown:
    240 GB total
    187 GB available
    Your plan
    Free 15 GB
    Your additional storage
Referral bonus (0% achieved) 0 GB
    Loyalty bonus 10 GB
    Camera roll bonus 15 GB
Bing bonus 100 GB (Valid through: 2/9/2017)
Enthusiast bonus 100 GB (Valid through: 2/20/2016)
I clicked the link. I presume this just means that I get to keep the 15 GB Free and the 15 GB Camera roll bonus? It would be nice to be able to extend the expiry dates on the Bing bonus and the Enthusiast bonus.

But since I'm using more than 5 GB of OneDrive storage, I should be eligible for the free 1TB that they promise in January.

I've got the same. I think I got it from buying a windows tablet with a year free Microsoft Office. I don't know if I will lose space if I don't renew the subscription.

How much are you actually using?

I think this is absolute bull.

Microsoft is a huge company and it is well within their capacity to offer unlimited space but to advertise it, people use it as intneded (ie for unlimited backup) and then punish users for doing so?!

It makes no sense, I'm glad they're receiving a massive backlash from people anyway.

    Unlimited means unlimited, period.

Am I right assuming (I think I read it somewhere in here when the deal came up) that we are able to keep the free space, after the expiry dates, if it is used up?

Very little to be honest. This thread reminded me that I even had OneDrive. I got caught up in fear of missing out on something I don't need.

For anyone that needs to get onedrive storage above 5gb, or just move the files to a few different clouds you can try:
    https://www.multcloud.com/

it can be used to transfer files from one cloud (example Dropbox) to another cloud (example Onedrive) without you having to download or reupload the files again.

there is a 2tb transfer limit (it can be pushed up to 10tb if you tweet or google+ about it) but 2tb should be more than enough for most people

just to add when they say transfer what they mean is copy - file gets copied to new cloud location and original stays where it is.

Great app\website! Gonna give it a go as it seems like exactly what I need!

    Hi

Has anyone received the 1tb space after doing the below? I done this in December but haven't received any confirmation

I'm using 53GB of 240GB (still have 187GB available) so I'm well over the 5GB. But when I click on Office 365, the most I can find is one month free.
    Try Office 365 for free
    Office 365 Home trial includes
    • Fully installed Office 2016 versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more.
    • Installation on up to 5 PCs or Macs.
    • Office mobile apps on up to 5 tablets and 5 phones.
    • 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage per user, for up to 5 users.
Credit card required. After your 1-month free trial, Office 365 Home is €10.00 per month. Cancel anytime. Compatible with Windows 7 or later. Office 2016 for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.10. Microsoft account required.
    https://products.office.com/en-ie/try

Maybe it's something that will roll out as they start to downgrade our storage allowances. I see my "Enthusiast bonus 100 GB Valid through: 2/20/2016" - maybe when that is due to expire, I'll get the Office 365 offer.
