Looks poor to to be honest. Resolution is very low for a tablet, let alone a phone screen.
Processor looks very underpowered and it'll drive you mad and wonder why you didn't buy a better device.

    What it your budget?

Thanks for reply..I would go to about 200 euro..

Without a doubt! For budget of €200 the Nvidia Shield K1 is the way to go. That thing from Soundstore will wreck your head if you buy it.

OP, there is an excellent tablet on sale in Aldi tomorrow for 200 quid. Have a look in their website.
Say you need to be there early to pick it up.

I have 2 nvidia shield at home, what a machine, battery life is excellent, performance is great. Well worth the wait for amazon to have back in stock.

I bought mine from amazon.fr but amazon.de also have them.

I got a YOGA 2 tablet from argos in the ilac centre .
    209 euro today.
quad core cpu ,2gig ram, 32gig storage, The os takes up 6gig.
it reads standard usb drives thru my otg cable .
Very nice menu ,interface .dolby sound .
battery at 29 per cent, right now ,came with 42 per cent charge on the battery ,used for 4 hours ,wifi ,Youtube.web browsing, downloaded 5 apps .music player, bookreader etc angry birds 2 .
The manual says up to 18 hours battery life .
it loads up webpages very fast ,like using a laptop .
    Resolution 1920x 1200 .
    sound is very good,
built in adjustable kickstand ,very handy .
    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3224670.htm

i might get a usb to ethernet cable 14 euro, maplins , to save on battery life .
since it has a usb port .
    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3224670.htm#pdpFullProductInformation

The YOGA Tablet 2 includes an incredibly powerful battery that will let you last for longer without recharging. This battery, housed in the cylindrical area of the tablet will help deliver true mobility, lasting up to 15 hours and has up to 20 days standby time.

    end quote .

The screen is beautiful ,like an ipad 2 screen .
2 speakers ,just under the screen at the front .
    sound quality is excellent .
Youtube looks great on it .
The interface menu ,is easy to use ,
maybe a slightly adapted version of standard android layout .
it has a sc card slot and a phone sim card slot at the back ,under a slide out panel.
    no hdmi video out port.
in menu ,settings ,storage it says 32gig storage,
    i was expecting 16gig storage .
Going from the ads i saw online and reviews online .
i presume it might be possible to use it with a 3g sim card , if you got a sim from 02, or 3 ,
i haven,t read all the specs ,re simcard 3g use
theres a user manual installed as an app .

Does yours have a sim card slot? Makes it even more of a bargain.

It has a sim card slot, and a sdmicro slot.
manual says insert phone sim card here .
under sliding panel, 3 x1inch, rear of tablet.
hidden by kickstand if stand is folded into up position.
    I have,nt read all the manual ,
re does it work in 3g data mode ,
eg with a sim from 02 or 3, vodafone ?
i think it would use a micro sim phone card.
theres a user manual app on the home screen.
quick start manual ,says insert sim card here ,slot 2.
insert sdmicro card here slot 1.
    turn on tablet.
battery at 42 per cent when i took tablet out of the sealed box.
box was sealed with 2 plastic stick on adhesive tabs 2x1 inch.
i looked at 10 tablets on various websites ,
    average battery life 5- 8 hours .

Yoga 2 manual says up to 18 hours battery life ,
    depending on usage .
had it on since i got home ,around 4pm.
    battery at 24 per cent.
had wifi on 3 hours approx,
took out of box, turn it on,
battery was at 42 per cent .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭RossieMan

What was the battery at when you opened it?

    You repeat yourself a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

ok, I,m trying to use basic non techie language,
battery was at 42 per cent,
now its at 22 per cent ,i turned on wifi 5 minutes ago.
IF There,s a sim card slot does that mean i could put in my 3 Sim from my 3 smart phone ,
    and use 3g data ,
    i buy credit 20 euro ,
get 3 umlimited data for 30 days .
or would i need to go to 3 and get another sim card .
    i,m just curious ,
As i have wifi it would be mainly used at home ,
    or on a bus ,
    Using free bus wifi .
does a tablet with a sim slot mean its 3g data compatible ?
maybe they gave me the wrong yoga tablet,
as the ad on argos says 16gig storage,
    i have 32gig,
    minus 6gig for the os.
    my other tablet,
zoomStorm play 1030 10inch has 3hours battery life on wifi .

    in terms of specs ,cpu,
this tablet is twice as fast as my old laptop .
    dual core 1.8ghz satellite.2gig ram .
i,ll leave it on til 1pm,
and see does the battery last that long .

    this looks good,
come s with otg usb cable,
    has usb host mode,
    reads standard usb drives .
    32gig sd card included .
i installed firefox browser ,On the yoga tablet
so i can listen to youtube,in the browser ,
    in tab 2,
without video displayed on screen , all the time ,
    using the youtube app .
    screen is now black,
but i,m still hearing youtube .
screen is set to go off after 15 seconds in display, settings .

If you're saying a USB ptg cable is a plus when buying a tablet I really can't take your opinion seriously. They cost about 50 cent to buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

i know they are very cheap to buy ,from amazon etc
still its handy to get one in the box.
i still think the yoga 2 is a better tablet.
    battery at 15 per cent,
down from 42 per cent at 4pm.
i switched it on at 4pm,today.
battery was charged when i opened the box to 42 per cent.
i,m saying going by the ad specs,
its not a bad tablet .
the 32gig sd card is worth alot more than the cable.

You'd be mad to pay even that much for OTG! I got two of them for 37 cents including postage off a bargain alert by Allyall a couple months back. :D

The tablet at Aldi and the Lenovo are both based on Intel Atom SOC instead of ARM SOC. Personally, I wouldn't be too keen on that.
To take just one example, for me it would mean no Amazon Underground apps as Amazon only seem to offer their apps for ARM.

They do have larger screens than the Shield though. (10 inch versus 8)

    time 1.11
    battery at 10 per cent,
    setting,battery, says 9 hours ,12minutes,
    on battery,
i turned on tablet battery at 42 per cent .
tablet on since i opened box and took it out,
So yoga 2 looks good at least in terms of battery life .
downloaded 9 podcasts about 5o meg each .
i,ll switch it off right now.

What percentage was the battery when you turned it on out of interest?

It's got to a ridiculous level now, I've never seen a review like it. I'm surprised he hasn't been telling us when it's dropped.

Battery was at 42 per cent. When I opened the box. At 4pm. Left it on till 1.last night turned on at 10.40. WiFi on. Battery now at 7 Per cent. Manual says up to 18 hours battery life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

It went off ,around 12.30 AM, battery at 1 per cent ,
    last time i tried it,
it powered on ,then switches it self off after 20 second s .

That's extremely bad for the life of your battery. You can permanently damage a Lithium Ion battery by draining it down to that low. You might have already needlessly shortened the long term usability of the battery by doing this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

How low should i let it go.
    10 per cent .
    before i charge it .
i heard once a month ,let the battery drain to zero.
    i,ll charge it at 6pm,
see how long it takes to charge to 100 per cent .

The advice that I have heard on Lithium-Ion/Lithium-Polymer batteries is to ideally keep them somewhere between 40% and ~97% whenever you can, to ensure the longest possible lifespan before a battery will need replacement.

I would definitely charge it or turn it off before it goes below 10% if such circumstances arose.

The advice you heard about draining a battery once a month relates to the older nickel–metal hydride battery technology that was the main type back in the 90's and was common in the early mobile phones here.
Some of those nickel–metal hydride batteries could benefit from a regular drain as it was supposed to clear them of "memory effect" which resulted from repeated partial charging and caused the maximum storage capacity of the battery to lower.
These batteries started to become phased out in favour of Lithium-Ion batteries around the time Nokia 5110 came out, but along the way people weren't made aware that what was good for NiMH was actually rather bad for Li-ion.

Just as you shouldn't let the battery go too low, you shouldn't leave a Li-ion battery on a charger for extended periods either once it has reached full charge. Although most modern devices and chargers know to lower the charge rate provided once the battery has reached 100% charge, even the trickle charge it then provides can cause a little bit of stress to the battery, and for maximum life leaving a fully charged device connected to a charger should be avoided.

Basically with Li-ion both extremes should be avoided. Charging a little bit and often is supposed to be best approach.
Personally I charge my phone before bedtime and take it off the charger before I go to sleep, so that it doesn't give most of the night sitting on a charger at full charge. I also find portable power banks to be great for a top up during the day if I can't get to a mains charger.

Your tablet may take a while to build up the first couple of % points when charging after this drainage. If it does then take no notice as it is normal behaviour designed to help protect the battery by trickle charging at first.

    Good luck!

    Sweet
It takes 4.5 hours approx to charge
Approx . seems to be sold out of most Argos stores
Only thing I don't like is the android OS menu icons at the bottom of screen all the time
Most of the time I use the kickstand on my chair . no need to hold the tablet at all .
You can set the standat any angle you choose I set brightness less than 10 per cent . battery on 9 hours
Maybe WiFi on for 5 hours approx
    Charged it yesterday .
1 charge since I got it home from the shop battery at 72 per cent now
    It's a good tablet

the argos site says that the Lenovo Yoga 2 is a 16 GB model

But the model you actually get seems to be the 32GB model (at least according to the box specs on the one I picked up)

so @€;210 its a fairly decent bargain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

i put in the catalog no ,for the yoga 2 ,
theres a label on the tablet Yoga 2 tablet
maybe theres no 16gig models left.
The ad on argos .ie says 16gig .
    yes its a great bargain.
i don,t think theres many left in the shops ,unless you buy them from amazon ,
    or some website .

i dont know any tablet that has longer battery life than 18 hours .
67 per cent left on battery
battery on for 9 hours 15minutes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

When i turn on the tablet it says system update ,?
i,m not sure if i want to update it.
if there,s a risking of having a dead tablet.
its working fine as it is.
i,ll probably just ignore the update notice .
the android apps are mostly set to auto update .
i dont know if thats an update of the android OS update or something else it refers to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭RossieMan

What percentage is the battery on?

I'm just joking. The update actually improves the tablet if you ask me. Lollipop is brilliant on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

so You are saying system update ,
    = update android 4 to android 5,
so i,d have to re download the 7 apps i downloaded .
i,m charging it for the second time right now .
battery was at 5 per cent when i plugged in the charger .

The battery does last 18 hours ,but i use the wifi for maybe 5 hours
and switch off wifi when i,m playing a game or listening to music on the tablet.
Have you updated your tablet to the latest os .?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭RossieMan

I've had this since June. I prefer lollipop, its not a lot different but why not use the latest when It's available.

The tablet does everything fairly well. You can get higher spec for a similar price from China if that's what you're after.

The tab Aldi had recently is fairly similar. It may not have as big a battery as the Lenovo. You might still be able to find one in a local Aldi.
    http://aldi.medion.com/md99282/ie/?refPage=aldi

Personally I wouldn't buy one for my own use, as this kind of money will buy a Nvidia Shield, which although smaller, would be much more to my taste - BUT as you are looking for it as a present, and time is short til xmas, the Aldi tab may be your best bet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

If you look on the ad ,at aldi ie,
it says 12 plus hours battery life.
the yoga 2 really has 18 hours battery life .
I Looked at loads of ads , reviews ,and most 10 inch tablets have 8 hours battery life or less .
i think the shield tab is the closest to the yoga 2 .
IF you want it for xmas it,s probably too late to get a yoga 2 .
aldi tab comes with a 32gig sdcard in the box

I managed to pick one of these up as a present. The battery life doesn't seem great though.

I noticed last night it died after 23 hours after being fully charged. In standby most of the time with about 90 minutes usage.

That can't be normal is it?
That is definitely not normal, especially for a brand new device (and I'm assuming it's the Lenovo Yoga 2 you are taking about, which has a pretty large battery anyway).

I'd say give it the benefit of the doubt for the moment and charge it again. Once it is charged fully again have a look in the settings for power/battery and see if there is some rogue app that seems to have been consuming a very abnormal amount of the battery power.

I'm at a loss really, but i would suggest that you also try to avoid letting it go down to such a low level of charge, as this has a very detrimental effect on long term battery life for reasons I explained in this post earlier in the thread.
If at all possible maybe charge it twice a day and try to keep it above 40% for a few days and see if that makes any difference.

I've a feeling you'll be returning it, Captain.

According to GSM Arena Yoga 2 tablet has 9600 mAh in the 10 inch model and 6400mAh in the 8 inch. There's no way on earth that even the smaller model would be gone down that low in a day, with less than 2 hours of usage and the rest in standby.

And the effects of severe battery drainage I mentioned would only really be harmful and manifest in the long run, as in the battery wouldn't last as many months as intended. 24 - 36 months would I think be the expected lifespan with most devices being used daily for a few hours. It certainly shouldn't be goosed in just a couple of days.

Hopefully you bought it from some place like Argos or Amazon who are decent to deal with when it comes to returning things.
