Domhnall Gleeson is a great actor but I think they needed someone older and with more gravitas to play that role. I know that would have drawn comparisons to Tarkin but a younger actor in that role just seemed off. Hell, even Domhnall's father would have done a good job.

Personally thought he was one of the best things about it.

I'm kinda hoping that they will mould Ren in the image of Darth Vader, to steel his resolve given 1) his reverence of Vader and 2) the terror that Vader image inspired across the Galaxy.

One thing I'm not so clear about - we have the First Order as the continuation of the 'Empire', but given that there's also some sort of a functioning Republic now, where is the Republic's army? How is the rebellion suddenly so very weak? It didn't appear to have any fleet or considerable presence - just a handful of X-Wings.

I think it could have done more to clarify just what the situation is across the galaxy.

Also, there was a scene where Snoke made reference to using clones to get the job done, which was rebutted by General Huxx (or was it Ren...either way) who wanted to use his own stormtroopers - are we to understand that there is still an army of the original clonetroopers knocking about somewhere? It would be interesting to see how that comes into it down the line.

I really didn't like Supreme Commander Snoke. Everything about him, from his appearance to his name felt like it belonged in Lord of the Rings and not Star Wars.

Also wasn't enthusiastic about Death Star 3 a.k.a Starkiller base. I would have much preferred something a little more original than yet another rehash that played out more or less identical to the previous three times it's been done. (ANH, ROTJ, TPM)

A good movie overall that has set things up nicely for the sequels to come.

Perhaps Rey is Kylo Rens Sister and Finn is Rey and Kylo Rens half brother.

The connection could be that Leia had a relationship with Lando and maybe that's part of the reason Han and Leia split up ?

I had the exact same thought. I'm also unsure why they're referred to as a 'resistance' force...who are they resisting (I'd have thought it should be the new republic and the first order at war instead)? Unless the First Order are still hanging on to sections of previously occupied Empire territory, and freedom hasn't been fully restored? It could have done with a tad more explanation...

I think it would have made the movie stronger as well if the backdrop to TFA was a galaxy still expressly divided between the First Order and the New Republic.

I feel like a strong opening battle scene ala Hoth, or the Battle of Coruscant at the start of ROTS, could have nicely established just what was happening in the broader sense across the Galaxy.

The movie seemed to imply that the First Order were the dominant force in the galaxy, but muddied the waters with the talk of the republic and the resistance without at any point clarifying the relationship between them and the overall situation across the Galaxy.

I'm hoping that that new book 'Aftermath' will clarify things somewhat, looking forward to reading it.

There was a line to the effect of the the resistance won't be able to hide behind the Republic once they used the wepon. Maybe the Republic and First order were in a kind of "Cold War" with the Resistance the ones taking on the first order. Them destroying the planets was maybe like a blindside punch akin to The Cylons in BSG. You could even argue that maybe allot of the fleet was around those planets that were destroyed hence the Piss poor attack on the star-killer. It does seem very very vague. Maybe it was there plan and one of the planned spin offs is the raise of the first order.

So why no ghost Yoda? :p;)
(I know, can't be having that, otherwise why no ghost Anakin, Obi-Wan, etc..., you won't be able to move for ghost Jedi on screen)

I saw the movie, I loved it, but then I made the MASSIVE mistake of reading the reviews on IMDB. That site is a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Looks like a lot of angry virgins out for blood. Incidentally, those are the same virgins waiting for ISIS in the afterlife. Poor bastards. Imagine sharing eternity with a bunch of angry nerds.

Will be interested to hear how your daughter gets on.
I've a 5 year old and am debating bringing him. Don't know if 2 hours is too long for him.

Saw the original in the savoy as well.went to the light house on Thursday lunchtime.

Really enjoyed it but was surprised with the sudden ending.
Some of it was a rehash of the original and the Hans , leia mushy seen was well... mushy!
    Didn't see Han getting killed.
    Looking forward to 2017.

Well my 7 year old daughter loved it! She stayed tuned throughout all of it and wasn't scared by any scenes. She cried a bit when Han Solo got it, but so did I. In fact I swelled up once the famous scroll got going. Being someone that saw the original at the age of 7, I got really emotional at how this movie is crossing generations. Today I watched a movie with my 7 year old that was a sequel to a movie that I watched as a 7 year old and in the same cinema. Seriously lads, this must be a film first. Seeing Han, Chewy, Leia, C3PO, R2D2 along with new characters and finally Luke, blew me away.

I don't like getting too in depth about stuff as its a goddamn sci fi movie, but I totally warm to Rey and Finn and can't wait to see them in episode 8. Kylo Ren does it for me big time. Hux needs a bit of work, while Snoke works for me too. The plot was an absolute rehash of ANH, but it didn't bother me because I enjoyed the references to the past and the potential future of this journey.

Absolutely delighted that I saw this in the Savoy Galactic screen. Lots of families there. A really great atmosphere. As for Skellig Michael, didn't it look fab. It could have been recreated via CGI and Studio shots. However the real life rugged look and real atlantic lighting delivered up one ****ing fantastic ending.

(my 7 year olds only criticism was that Luke said nothing!)

what's the rating in Irl, it's got M here in NZ!

Good movie but could have been so much more than just a re-imaging of ep4.

12A in Ireland. Lots of "don't bring any kid under that age" BS going on. Its harmless.

I agree about it being a re-imagining of Ep4, but these are the days we are in.

Brought my 10 and 7 year olds to it last night and neither were disturbed by anything in it. Both loved it and I enjoyed getting a re-watch outside the hype-filled environment of the midnight screening. It holds up to a second watch very well :)

What did disturb me somewhat was that my 7 year old's favourite character was Kylo Ren. I mean ffs, they give us a kick-ass girl in Rey for her to look up to but no, my daughter has to go for the sith lord!

I brought my 5 yr old (boy) and 7 yr old (girl) last Thursday. I think my 5 year old was a bit put out Han "fell off" the bridge (Han is his favourite) but it didn't bother him in any real way. I just was glad nothing happened to Chewie as that would have been harder for my daughter!

Fantastic movie not without its issues. Not sure why they needed to parallel the plot of ANH so much, but they did it so well I didn't care. Hoping to see it again in a few days.

4 more sleeps until the Millenium Falcon comes out from the attic (and down the chimney). :D

Jaysus. Just looked at the IMDB reviews there. Mad Ted! "I give this film 1 star only because I can't give it zero"

You know what is bothering more about Han death then anything else is he won't have a scene with Luke in the next one. You know it could have been good with Luke failing with training his Son and all that. Granted they'll probably have a moment with him and Leia but there was allot more screen time between Han and Luke then I'd assume between anyone else so it's definitely a missed opportunity to not at least have then in once scene.

They've possibly filmed some stuff for flashback etc. I'd say Ford has done a lot of extra scenes and possibly even some stuff for the solo "Solo" movie.

Ford isn't actually dead. Just the character. It would have been a brave young exec who approached him and said "look we'd like to film a few scenes now for the next three or four films given the whole old age meaning death any time now thing"

The butt hurt that an unknown basement dweller wasn't chosen to direct Disney's hottest property over an established Hollywood director is palpable...

I can find faults with it, as a film it's probably a 6/7 out of 10 but as a Star Wars movie, it's fan-****ing-tastic.

Went last night to the 3d i-sense in Odean Blanchardstown, the 3d did little for it IMO, dogfight scenes the exception, thought they looked great in 3d.

Overall... I loved it, & I mean I REALLY Loved it... genuinely shocked at Hans death as I'd avoided spoilers & am not ashamed to admit I shed a tear at the knowledge my favourite ever character in the SW universe was now gone for good...

Never thought the feeling I had as a 5yo watching the original film in Savoy one would ever be repeated, but last night it all came flooding back...

Loads I want to say, but want to see it again & absorb it more before losing the run of myself...

It may be flawed as a film, but do I care?... not a jot.. Its proper Star Wars & has me absolutely buzzing to see where the story goes from here, something the prequels simply never did.... I tip my hat to JJ Abrams & his team... this movie was never about oscars & awards& suchlike, this was always about progressing the story in a way the fans wanted, it did it in spades IMO.
