I don't think I ever averaged 30mpg on any of my 6 cylinder BMWs due to commuting and short runs but they weren't too bad on motorways often came back from Limerick Cork or Belfast showing 35mpg or more on a run if I took it handy enough

My e46 325i is about 32-35mpg on a run. Awful in traffic but what isnt. I think traffic is where the 4 pot turbos have the edge.

35 mpg is very possible in them if you keep them between 100 and 110.

I once got 35.2 mpg out of mine, which was mostly main roads at 100-110 km/h but also included a 160 km spin doing 120 km/h on the M7 motorway.

Around town is where they drink fuel, worth every cent for the engine though:D!

Never saw better than 25mpg in any Bimmer I had until I went dirty diesel

G....... so it just goes to show what a load of baloney engine downsizing is,....

I averaged 40mpg over 480 miles in a 1.5 turbo Mercedes c class last week..... Mild hybrid thing.

I wasn't driving with economy in mind, just normally.

It was in the real world....I thought it was fair enough truth be told.

My wifes' Ibiza with 1.0 TSI does over 50mpg on average. Sure it won't set the world alight but it's as quick or quicker than an old NA 1.6 engine would be. She had a loaner of an 06 Almera while waiting for the new car to be delivered in 2018 and it was an absolute guzzler compared to the Ibiza. Some of the newer petrol engines are very economical to be fair.

I think Marks fuel economy in the 330i might not be typical as he was making the most of the performance. From what I’ve read, closer to 35 to 40 mpg is more typical depending on the mix of urban or motor way.

That is pretty decent to be fair. I've just never found small engines give me the same mpg as bigger engines, be it petrol or diesel.

I clocked up 200 km on a Renault Captur a couple of months ago, 900 cc engine and I got just 37 mpg on a mix of motorways and rural roads in County Wicklow, I wasn't even pushing on that much on the country roads in it either. I've no doubt a bigger four cylinder non-turbo petrol would have managed at least that much and more likely topped 40 mpg and it would have offered a far superior driving experience, too. I never knew it was possible to make an engine as rough and uncouth as it (even the old VW 1.9 TDI PD engines are smoother - and that's saying something).

I am told that the VW 1.0 TSI and Ford 1.0 Ecoboost are very good engines, so I look forward to trying one in due course, but the only thing the 900 cc Renault engine has convinced me is that an old school engine is far better in every possible way!

    The 900cc is a small 3 cylinder with a turbo ........... it's for a city car essentially.
It's far preferable to a 1 litre 4 cylinder engine from "old school".

I knocked 41mpg from one in Portugal one year, a 1.0 Corsa only yielded 33mpg on my previous trip and a 1.0 nasp Ibiza gave 36mpg. I found the Renault offering ligher on fuel then the other two.

I knocked 45mpg from a 1.0 Yaris in Germany one time with lots of motorway trips though.

No contest. 7 all day long!

Depends what you want from it really. The 7 Series would be a lot more of a barge than the 3 Series but if you want comfort, luxury and refinement then the 7 Series would be the obvious choice. A 2018 7 Series would still have a fairly amount of hefty amount of depreciation left in it.

I agree Bazz but when do you stop !
    thinking around 50k for a 2018 7 series and a the same for a 330i msport plus.
Anybody know anything about the plug in 7 series , is it the same engine that in a 330e ?

About 37.5k to spend for something petrol & automatic. Anything spring to mind? Sterling is a bit shíte at the minute, but I was looking at a current shape A250 AMG line with the Premium Plus pack.

Along the lines of a hot hatch? I'd be having a look at this

50k for a new 330i m sport? They are 55k before any options or packs added, and you'll definitely need to spec it up or you'll regret it. Be around 60k for decent spec.

If going 7 series I would avoid hybrid and go for six cylinders. A nicer engine with lots of torque. Something like this,

    https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/bmw/7-series/fpa/201911194547147

I assume the 330i you're thinking of is a demo g20 for this price bracket. Think I would have the 7 if size doesn't bother you.

What style of car you looking for? A hot hatch, saloon,SUV?
    How old would you go?

Where are you seeing a 2018 740e for 50k, in the UK? Similar 2.0 litre engine + electric motor found in the 530e and 330e but with 326bhp.

    What about a 530i?

Whilst a six or eight cylinder 7 series is likely a nicer drive, the 740e is extremely attractive financially.

You can have this landed for €40,000, VRT is €3400 on the 740e.

    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201909232532571?fuel-type=Hybrid%20%E2%80%93%20Petrol%2FElectric%20Plug-in&fuel-type=Petrol&advertising-location=at_cars&make=BMW&price-from=25000&model=7%20SERIES&radius=1500&sort=price-asc&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&postcode=bt11aa&page=2

VRT on a 740i/Li is ballpark €11,000-€14,000 depending on how Revenue class the ROD.

    That is seriously good value.
The link I posted was to a 172 730d in beshoffs for 50k that is fully loaded. Link seems broken now.
Have you ever driven a 740e?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

No not yet. Hard to wangle a test drive when i've no intention of buying here, just too much of a price disparity. I reckon i'd also want a weekend test drive to see how liveable it would be, which I don't see happening too easily. Having rented a 640i with the same engine in Germany earlier this year, I think the I6 is the way to go, the 740Lis are a fair bit cheaper than the 740e and much more choice.

    ( cheaper before VRT)

The one is beshoffs is nearly 100% what i would look for except a year newer , right colour, spec ,X drive and the rear media package the only things i would like.

should be able to get a 2018 730d in new year close to 50k surely with this spec.

Voodoomelons example is a good example of whats out there.
