pretty sure those systems that pre dry the brakes have been available across many cars for years alright.

I actually think the 6gt looks good in m sport spec but then I find my 5 touring attractive! I think though it's stuck in no mans land as it is neither suv/estate or sportback.
That 40i engine does seem to be a peach though and the new m340i will be some car. I agree with Joe that the new 3 is a big step from the last and could be a strong seller but I think it is too expensive here.
I assume you will be eyeing up a 740i for sure now Voodoomelon?

I'm starting to see more 2016-17 petrols trickling onto Autotrader, its all about price. They're still not dropping, even though we're well into the new year and the facelift is also out. Still not willing to drop over €45k on one, will give it another few months and see what happens the market.

I'm dropping money into a little project, converting a 200 year old mews into a nice two car garage, getting some quotes for a new concrete floor. I want to get it tiled like you see in the dealers and will add a second floor into it where the hay loft was, so bit of work in that.

Problem is that in the UK petrols, hybrids and evs are in vogue so used prices are staying strong. Used diesels on the other hand are cheaper to buy now than their petrol counterparts.

This is it, no one ordered them in 2016, now 3 years later everyone wants the few there is!

The 5 series touring most certainly is a good looking car! I don't think many would dispute that. Even in the F11 with M sport spec they were nicer imo than the saloon.

The Germans always made good looking estate cars.

The 6 series gt is not something I've ever taken notice of.
I assumed it just still a fat arsed 5 series given a 6 badge to try to make it a little more exclusive.
Is it still 5 series interior etc?

Same wheelbase as a 7 but the seats are mounted higher. Acres of room in the back, more than the SWB 7. I haven't sat in a G30 5 but its on a par with the G10 7 space wise and quality wise. Sure they essentially share all the same equipment now, our rental had comfort seats, the works.

The 5 gt must have been a reasonable enough seller or they wouldn’t have replaced it with the 6 gt. I know two people with them and they love the space and comfort as well as the slightly higher driving position.
Apparently they are not replacing the 3 gt as it has been a flop.
Did you specifically look for a 640 to hire on your trip or was it random?

I keep getting pulled back to this car. Would make a great last ice car to own before electric takes over.

Too much money for what it is. Buy an E92 M3, have more fun, yeah pay more tax but again, have more fun. E60 M5, €17,000, have more fun. If there’s anything driving a mix of cars and ditching newer BMWs has taught me, it’s that theres a lot of alternatives out there.

The new G20 looks good I must admit but as Mark said, the money is gone crazy. A 320d M-Sport starts at 52k odd! It's easily up on 60k when you tick a couple of "essentials".
The depreciation on them in the first 2 years will inevitably be off the cliff too. Wait till they're 2 years old and buy one then!

totally agree, the depreciation in the first 24 months would be something they would make a joke over in the laughter lounge!

Absolutely agree. I would never buy new again but a 2/3 year old will be attractive.
The looks of the new 3 are good but as I have said before prices even with the current reductions are too high.

Did you say they are doing 2.9% pcp? I looked on the Irish configurator and they have the APR on there at something like 8%!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭carsfan2

    Configurator is wrong Joe.
There is 2.9% on most models including the new 3.

A 540i xdrive could be a much cheaper alternative, performance will be a little less but you will get a much higher class of car and a 1-2 year old one will have taken the depreciation already.

Don’t know if your psychic digiman but that’s what I was thinking after.
    I have had two f series 3 series, a 330d and a 330e and always wished I was back in a 5 after a short while.
I started looking at uk prices of 540i and think one would be a financially better proposition.
Apparently also BMW are bringing the m550i back to the uk market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,529 ✭✭✭MarkN

The thing about 540i is it will continue to drop in value drastically until it’s around 8/9 years old in Ireland so buying a two year old one is deffo the sweet spot but you’ll continue to lose your shirt.

Didn't hear they were going to bring the m550i back to the UK, it would be an animal altogether!! But then you will have to wait even longer to buy one of them as they probably won't release it in the UK until the new version is out so probably be 3 years before they become affordable.

Any links to where you heard that?

We might not be importing anything from the UK in the future if the Brits crash out of Europe without a deal, as you might have to pay VAT on top of VRT making UK imports too expensive.

I’d say the Irish motoring industry is not against that aspect of Brexit.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for brexit. I don't believe it will happen and if it does, it will be in name only.

I think you lose your shirt on every car these days Mark!
I have my sensible 520d m sport tourer a year. I bought it as a 9 month old car with 2.5k miles on it. The on the road new price even with the current "reduced" prices is 74k. I paid 51k last March and at a guess would be lucky to get 40k back as a trade in. I am not complaining as I fully expected this after trading in my 330e and suffering similar value loss.
Makes you wonder how they manage to sell any new cars at all and these massive drops in value are not confined to BMW.

Speaking of losing your shirt. I do really like these! About 64K landed for a 2018.

Love them, would like one with Navarra blue, black pack and red breaks and she would be perfect!!

I would imagine bootspace would be very good as well for transporting a young family.

Beautiful car. I test drove an a5 sport back in 190 diesel form and was unimpressed although I imagine that’s a different beast.

Now that you are driving a wide variety of cars Mark do you find much difference in driving experience?
Are we paying for the badge now more than ever?
Example, Does the skoda superb give the same experience as a Audi A6?
Any stand out cars besides the pamamera?

How do you find the 5 wagon carsfan? I'll be going for another touring in a few years I'd imagine and think with the way 3 prices are going the 5 is the one to have.
