Just to gauge the judgement of the tread on this topic: I'm going to have to change car in the next 12 months. Driving 2 litre diesel Toyota with heavy wear and tear. I've looked at options but the big point is whether to go electric or diesel. I'm worried about trade in value with diesel in 3-5 years. What do you think? Thanks

EV's are still a little bit niche and will not suit everyone, at least not at the moment. A lot of it boils down to your personal situation and usage. E.g. if you have no off street parking at home (no facility to charge overnight) and/or you're doing 2000km per week motorway driving then I would say an EV isn't for you.

You'll also likely be buying new if going for an EV and that's a big cost. It depends on what you want to spend.

Thanks for reply. I have off street parking and km p.a. would be around 20,000. I'm going new in any event and can look between 40 to 60. Comfort is the key thing and trade in value.

With a budget of €40/60k and a 20k kms/annum usage I'd think you'd be wise not to buy a new diesel tbh. I'd struggle not to go EV with that criteria.

IMO diesels have had their day for private motorists buying new unless you are doing lots of long trips and/or need to carry several passengers or stuff.

Thanks, it's smaller and lighter than the 530d so feels a bit livelier.

Lovely car Bazz, same colour and interior as my old one. The oyster really makes the cabin. I think the 430d is the sweet spot in the diesel ones too. The 435d is very quick but just too heavy. That’s a very tuneable engine too.

Super-looking motor. Good luck with it and safe motoring.

Your 4 series is back up on Zucars Joe for 29900 euro.

With regards to the discussion about selling privately, I agree it comes down to warranty But also access to dealer finance and often the buyer will have their own car to sell and lots of people don’t want to put their cars up privately so trade in makes sense.

Nail on head here, the guys talking about difficulty selling 3 litre cars privately are selling cars too new and expensive for the private sale market, I don't think it's to do with the 3 litre engine but more just the price. I've a 2 litre I'm giving consideration to moving on but it's in that 15k + range that I can't see people going for.
I've sold a good few of my own 2.5 and 3.0 cars very easily privately in last few years but they were older and cheaper. One was in the 15k + price range but got lucky there by chance someone I knew was looking for one.
I've a huge aversion to the price gap between what dealers value trade ins at and their own stock for sale so I'm probably stuck with it too, be it a 2 litre and a 3 litre.

Yeah I saw that earlier. Looks well - but then again it would have taken them minimal effort... a lick of tyre shine. Like you, I'm surprised it didn't end up on a BMW forecourt. I heard indirectly too that Quinn said "no" to taking it back into stock. They didn't even bother to call me back to tell me directly, not yet at least. Quality customer service, eh.

Agreed a 3 litrevengine, isnt large. I thi k people herevare very lazy in general. Organising your own finance, selling your own car privately etc... no " guarantee if private sale " lol, see what guarantee you get from many dealers of you have an issue.... there is literally nothing older coming up 0n bmwdrivernet for sale forum any more. Wonder have cars bern exported or people keeping them , when they realise high tax, is dirt cheap motoring, compared to eye watering depreciation on far less impressive cars, based on looks, presence, cylinders etc....

Interesting the difference in opinions about what holds back private sales compared with dealer sales. The trade in is the biggest convenience they have. Had my car sold, I knew which cars I would be calling about straight away but until it sells no point so those private sellers get no calls from me, or people like me until we have cash in our pocket. People with their own car sold, cash in pocket ready to go are very thin on the ground I'd say once values go up a bit.

I'd love to see the sale volumes per €1k price point showing private Vs dealer. Pretty sure plus 10k the private drops off a cliff.

Yeah I think it's in around 10k alright. Its probably the number I have in my head that I'll wait for my car to drop to before looking for a private sale and then a straight purchase for about 20k or maybe a bit more for something I want to move to. I think that's about 18 months, away. But my 20k will probably be going to a dealer so I can't complain really.

Spending 40 to 60k on any new car is going to result in high enough depreciation regardless of fuel type but with your mileage I would stay away from diesel alright.
As you’re in a Toyota would you consider something like a new Camry? They are petrol hybrid and have a reputation for good economy and being very comfortable. Just over 40k I think and I think would be low enough depreciation on them.

Were you trying to sell it back to Quinn’s or did you say you might trade it in ?
If the latter I’m surprised they didn’t follow up.

I’ve found over years some car sales guys that are nice as pie and sociable when trying to sell, won’t give you the time of day when there’s nothing in it for them. Not all the time but sometimes.

No I made it clear I was just looking to sell it back to them for now, but "might" be back again... mentioned I might be interested in looking at a 330e in the new year (I'm not). Ah, the sales lad was fine, he was perfectly amiable and polite about it and I got the impression that if it was his call (or if he was allowed to make a call) then he would have done a deal.

They mightn't have wanted to offend you with what they'd be offering perhaps. Strange though as your car was a beauty and ideal for a forecourt IMO.

Maybe I have gotten used to it but I don't think the grilles look as bad as feared.

I have a feeling that once there's a few on the road (if people are brave enough to buy them), the design will grow on you and it might actually be a very stylish car that stands out from everything else out there that all look the same.

The Bangle era beemers had the same initial reaction before they were accepted, and now often cited as the best design. Hard to know really.

An e60 msport still looks great if it has been kept well. I only got rid of mone 2 years ago and it was a great looking car. I worked for a BMW dealer in 03 when the first ones came out and there was a big scramble to buy the last of the e39s as people couldnt stand the e60. I think it was SE only at the start though and they have certainly not aged well. The e90 I still havent warmed to, although its a nice car to drive.

Its amazing what a registration plate does to the front of the 4 series, without it it looks terrible. I still havent seen one on the road though, are they on sale yet?

It grows on you!! I'm driving a 420 at the minute, my plan would be to being in a 6 month old one from the UK next year if Brexit hasn't been too painful in that department.
I wonder why BMW didn't go down the route of the Alfa 159, place the Reg plate on the lhs of the grille

I didn’t think the Bangle era BMW’s were ugly at all. The 5 series of that era has aged reasonably well imo. However that new 4 is irredeemably ugly. If we’re hoping a number plate improves it, it’s not a good start.

Not gone on any of the current BMW range with large over the top front grills. Just controversial styling for the sake of controversy imo.

I think that grill will only look ok with a dark colour car. Look at the yellow M4 compared to the green M3 in the link. That green is. Brilliant colour too.

BMW have lost a bit of their appeal to me with their latest generations. When the E46 M3 came out I knew every detail that separated from a normal coupe. It was the complete ultimate dream car that was some way obtainable. I know nothing and have no interest really in finding out what the new stuff has. I'm guessing 500ish bhp and 4wd....no doubt super fast but just not the gap that used to be between the standard car. I'm prob just getting older with less time to read or care anymore. Literally zero interest in it, probably because I can't afford it either.
