Reading bits of this thread out to my Kerry partner is pretty hilarious.

He wishes it to be known that shagging a sheep is still more socially acceptable than shagging a Dub.

A lot of the direct-to-english translation of the irish language going on in Kerry. I would only be one generation removed from fluent Irish speakers and I notice a lot of my fathers ways of expressing himself were almost direct translations from Irish from his parents.

    Repeat after me:

    Ar'oo from Kerry?
    I am, ar'oo?
    Do 'oo ate the shpud?
    I do. Do 'oo?
    How do 'oo ate him?
    Shkin an' all!
    Do he choke 'oo?
    Not at all!

    :D

This thread seems to have backfired .. because everyone is saying how nice it is.

    Kerry is beautiful.

Not at all! I picked Kerry as probably the least offensive County. The comments are less divided than the Dublin is a kip thread (should run a poll on each), but there are similar traits from outrage to agreement to throwing insult to the OP's home town (thanks to whomever went looking for other threads/fora that would indicate my being from Dundalk). I also started this thread to look at how ridiculous such threads are including the Dublin one. People really do get deeply upset. Whether Dundalk is percieved as a kip or not meh! Its my kip and love it regardless of its problems, I certainly wont be insulted, I feel acknowledgement if issues in general of a town, city, or county, can be productive rather than straight up denial or whataboutery responses.

As for Kerry being a kip well probably not if based on scenery etc but of the many Kerry folk I have met, particularly abroad, they are fiercely competitive, when it comes to GAA rivalries arrogant and even angry. They were also fiercely loyal especially to friends and generally great fun to be around if a little wild at times. I would say the same about Dublin, and Cork folk!!

So...Dundalk is a kip but you love it...and Kerry is a kip if by "kip" you mean "fun and loyal but big into GAA"?

Kerry is beautiful. I moved from Co Cork to live here. But Kerry-people are weird ..... cute hooors, but weird!! For example, 90% of them call the C&W singer "Gareth" Brooks and "shure-arrah" is an acceptable answer to almost any question / statement, and "wee-wee" actually means "woa" (ie 'stop')

Also on the subject of weird words, I had this conversation early in my stay in the Kingdom
FRIEND "I had to carry my mother to hospital the other day"
ME "Why not use the car ?"
FRIEND "Shure-arrah, I carried her in the car!"
    ME "Who was driving?"
    FRIEND "I was!"
ME "was she not in your way?...."

took a while to figure out that 'carry' in Kerry means 'bring'

Sure don't we all say "a lift" in that situation? None of us make much literal sense if you think about it.

Actually I thought I pretty much summed it up precisely.

ie. Dundalk is a kip but you love it...which is fair enough.

You wouldn't know it as you haven't been to Kerry, but many here would view Tralee in the same way.

ie. Kerry is a kip because the people are "fun, loyal and big into the GAA".

Which is a very weird point, as kip usually refers to appearance of a place, not the character of those who live there. A lovely person might live in a kip, crooks may live in beauty spots.

I think his point is that posts and threads saying x is a kip or x is brill and y is terrible are silly. Which is very true though I wouldn't be making a thread titled like this to make the point.

    They are a little silly.

But I think someone who visits a place and says they thought it was ugly is entitled to that opinion, albeit that obviously it is subjective.

A person saying they haven't seen a place at all but say it's a kip because the people love GAA...well that's not an opinion on the appearance of the place at all, it is knitting together non sequitors.

    Which is extremely silly.

This is getting better and better! Spot on balmed out though why not start a thread to show how ludicrous these threads are or become. 'Kerry is a kip' was comment I made to provoke reaction, it doesnt matter what I actually think. I acknowledged that I chose Kerry as it is probably one of the least offensive place except maybe Carlow. I do love the way you have taken what I have said Conor and gave it a good twist. Its a kip because because the people love GAA - hmmm thats an interesting angle...

When it comes to GAA rivalries arrogant and even angry (thats my observation and I doubt many would disagree and wouldnt be unique to Kerry as I alluded to) and fun, loyal folk - such harsh words as with Cork and Dublin people too among others.

If we follow the trend of the Dublin thread, a crime was committed in Kerry recently, therefore its a kip.

I love Kerry, but I cant understand a word of that lovely sounding dialect.

They have sexual relations with sheep there.

    It's a well known fact.

Love Kerry. Been going there since I was a kid. Bit expensive compared to Dublin for eating out, but still amazing. Like Cork the country is so diverse, mountains, coast, forest etc... stunning.
