You left out what's imo the best one of all, A Man Escaped

I'd put A Prophet up there too. The French really are great at their prison films, have yet to see this one too. :)

Sleepers for me, Kevin Bacon was unforgettable in that, chilling performance.

I agree with the ones you listed OP and I have only seen a clip of Chopper (the scene where he says "keity seems to done himself a mischief" :) cant wait to watch it).

I liked The Experiment with Adrien Brody.

I don't see Riot in Cell Block 11 or Brute Force in that list. Great films have been made for a very long time, not just the last 40 years or so. But Le Trou is the best one I've seen.

    Scum.

Exceptionally powerful movie that still packs a whooper punch even after repeated viewings.

    Syvester stallones lock-up not mentioned,
    nor van dammes' Death warrant?

    For Shame.

True, also missing Escape Plan and Tango & Cash. The latter for Kurt Russell's hair alone.

I worked backwards and ran out of options (maximum 25) which is why I invited posters to post their own personal favourite ........

Top 100 Prison Movies is on Channel Four tonight at 9pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,276 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

There are some titles on the list that have no business there since they are not even prison movies, and some excellent prison movies left off.

My favourite prison movie of all time may be Lock Up with Stallone, Brubaker is also excellent, The Great Escape would be in the mix for me, tough to pick a favourite. From the list maybe Scum as that really has stood the test of time, big fan of Shawshank and American History X even though the latter is certainly not a prison movie

There are several movies that I have included on the list which aren't set exclusively in prison (American Me, Chopper, American History X, Sleepers etc.) but where prison does have a significant enough effect on the stories/characters that I am personally happy to put them in the Prison Movie category ......... as previously posted, there are a maximum of 25 options open in the polls which will obviously result in some movies being excluded hence why I invited posters to mention their own personal choices which you have done in the form of Brubaker, Lock Up and The Great Escape all of which would have been included in the poll if it were possible.

Celda 211. (Cell 211) Spanish flick but well worth the subtitles. Everyone likes an easy time on their first day at a new job...............

Love prison flicks. Felon with val Kilmer was another I watched quite recently though was made in 2008 which I found surprisingly watchable.

If I lived in the USA I would be especially careful not to fall foul of the law as the prisons there all seem to all include a one way ticket to rapesville. Any real life documentaries or articles I've read don't seem to do anything to make me think otherwise. Horrifying but as a setting prisons can provide some excellent drama for films and books.

A Prophet was a great wee movie. It was great to see a young Craig Doyle getting his big break into movies as the lead character in that one too.

Well if that's the case then I put forward the Bridge over the River Kwai too. I would say the Japanese pow camps in ww2 would even make the worst of the U.S. Prisons seem like a holiday camp.

Eh "life" was brilliant and hilarious with Eddie Murphy & martin Lawrence! Stir crazy was a classic, the hurricane, I could name quite a few more I'm sure but they are just sticking out at the moment!

Oh, An Innocent Man ......... yeah, I've seen it and it's ok ......... but I'd struggle to pick a movie from the Poll to replace with it.

    8. Scum

    7. The Great Escape

    6. Escape From Alcatraz

Stir Crazy, while a very funny classic movie that I personally love, is a surprise for me if I'm honest.

"Stir Crazy" is definitely good comedy movie. I remember many excellent prison movies, but I think that serious prison movies are better :-)

I'm looking for interesting prison episode from unknown TV series, but it was from 90's and I wrote this in correct thread entitled "movie Identification".

Does Escape from New York count as a prison movie? But anyway it got to be Birdman of Alcatraz for me.

I watched Escape from Alcatraz for the first time last week. I have a signed photo from Larry Hankin which he sent me in the post. I was also surprised to see Old man Marley from Home Alone in it. I was trying to figure out where I recognised his voice from.

However my favourite prison film is Stallone's 'Lock Up'.

A few more that don't seem to have been mentioned.

Scrubbers, a female Scum. Young Kathy Burke among the cast.

Prison (1988). Prison set horror movie, early role for Viggo Mortenson. Not as well known as it should be, maybe down to its generic title.

A Clockwork Orange counts down to the lengthy prison sequence.

The spin off movie of Porridge, extra points for giving more screen time to Genial Harry Grout, who only appeared in a handful of episodes of the series.
