Bands who change there singers

What bands would not benefit from changing there lead singers ???. I think u2, def lepperd, Metallica, Asian, foo fighters to name a few would be disasters with new singers

A lot of older bands have lost there original singers to retirement, health, break up, etc but sell there tickets through there hits sung by the former front person and there newer songs are not as good eg journey, foreigner.

It has worked for some bands changing leads eg Acdc, Fleetwood Mac, iron maiden, van halen, the dubliners and thin Lizzy to a small extent.

Queen with the American Idol guy are not the same without mercury

Discuss (if this fourm is inappropriate please move it to a relevant fourm thanks )

Nine Inch Nails would be a whole different band without Trent Reznor.

Imagine if bruce Springsteen left the e street band and someone like Robbie Williams tours with the e street band singing Bruce songs.

U2 could do with freshening up.

How many bands went on to become either equally as good or better / successful having changed their lead singer for someone else.... It just doesn't work.

    Milli Vanilli.

I give you Faith No More. started out with moderate success with Mike Morris on vocals in 1981. In 1989 Mike Patton replaced Morris and Faith No More became fairly huge or more successful, so it works for the better sometimes.

joy division didn't do too bad after singer change..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭Son0vagun

    Dropkick Murphys did it.
    The Pogues tried it.
It worked for Iron Maiden once, but didn't work for them the second time.
Blind Melon and Alice in Chains had to do it.

I guess AC/DC had to do it too, and work out best for them.

It worked for Sepultura, with Derrick Green, but I just couldn't listen to them without Max

Wouldn't be Nine Inch Nails then :) It was always pretty much his solo project anyway with whatever musicians he could drag along as his touring band.

Black Flag is a good example of a band changing frontman multiple times and still being successful. Henry Rollins is seen as the definitive frontman but Keith Morris, Ron Reyes and Dez Cadena were great as well.

Alice in Chains replaced their singer after the first lad died of a heroin overdose. The transition was very smooth in fairness.

Journey had two since Steve Perry. Don't think it has worked that well.

The Doors tried twice, once with Iggy Pop shortly after Jim died and thenmuch more recently with Ian Astbury from the Cult. I think Iggy was too off his nut on smack to be of any use and Ian just played a few live shows with the band. I'm sure he was great.

He had Jim down to a tee.

Yeah, I would have loved to see them. Legend has it that Ray Manzarek went to The Harbour Bar in Bray to see "The Back Doors" play, as he thought they were the best Doors tribute act going.

The Bob Dylan Band could do with a new vocalist I reckon. :pac:

Black Sabbath, tried, and tried, and never could replace Ozzy, Dio was close though.

The band will always be associated with Staley though, he was a massive part of their success.

I think the new guy is good and all that but it will never be the same for people who loved AIC in their 90s heyday.

Van Halen with Dave Lee Roth kicked ass, with Sammy Hagar they sucked balls, don't get me started on Gary Cherone from Extreme!

Close? He was better. If Tony hadn't been paranoid from years of cocaine use that version of the band could have gone on for years. Dio could not only sing but write songs which Ozzy couldn't.

I'm going to say The National without Matt Berninger would be totally different.

While I'm at it...The Bad Seeds without Nick Cave.

The Doors tried without morrison for a while but just wasnt the same.

Not only that, he was the best singer Rainbow had too.

Kamelot managed it after Roy Khan left, and he had some of the most incredible pipes going.

Tommy Karevik stepped in and worked out amazingly, in spite of people thinking Kamelot couldn't go on without Khan.

DLR is brutal since he came back.

I didn't mind Hagar but the music Eddie wrote was meh.

Very different band with Dio or Ozzy. Ozzy brought something that Dio couldn't.

Technically wise, Dio had a better voice but I much prefer how Ozzy sounded.

    Alcoholism?

j/k I like Ozzy an all but Black Sabbath with Dio was just magic, the two albums in the early 80's just had so many great songs.
