Do you have a little furry friend who brings you happiness to your life? I've been thinking of getting a pet lately and was wondering how AHers were experiencing their own pets.

I have a cat. They're the business, extremely low maintenance and very entertaining.

I have a cat, and he is my favourite ''person'' in the whole world. He's very funny, entertaining, loving and extremely affectionate. He is also low maintenance, walks himself and will sleep the day away if I go out. He has actually changed the opinions of a lot of people who were previously not very fond of cats, because he is so good natured. When I come home after a stressful day or if I'm not feeling well, and he's there to greet me, or we curl up in bed together for a nap, with him snuggled between my feet, I just feel completely at peace, in a way that only he can make me feel.

I have a dog, and he is my favourite creature in the world. I love him to bits and dread the day when he will have to go to doggy heaven. He's a great companion and it's great to come home from work and there he is barking and jumping at the door excited to see me.
He's easy going, sometimes he'll sleep downstairs, othertimes he will come up stairs and sleep in his 'upstairs' basket, other times he'll look to get up on the bed and snuggle down at the end of it. The only down side of holidays is that I can't bring him with me but luckily I have a great friend who looks after him while I am away and he gets to mix with her doggies.
    I wouldn't be without a dog now.

Two indoor cats and two outdoor cats- Kovu, Squeak, Smudge and Wailey Cat. The two outdoor cats were acquired after they turned up as strays. Kovu is my adorable dope, he kips on my bed when I'm home. He also comes for walks, I don't think he realises he's a cat.

2 cats, have them both nearly 8 years now. Got me through some tough years (depressed, etc), great to have around.

Hate cats. They only pay attention to you when they want, the rest of the time they ignore you.

Dogs adore you 100%, which is quite flattering

Have one cat, used to be two but poor Charlie past away last year. Fantastic company, nothing like a happy cat sitting on your lap :)

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Have a nice border collie dog, had four but three were stolen and that was depressing...
Two cats that came as strays and they hate each other. They aren't very friendly, but are good at begging for food. They get cat food and milk everyday. The milk comes from the washing out of the milking machine after milking. They share it with the dog.
I would count some of my dairy cows and heifers as pets, whom my dog helps bring in at milking time. The quiet cows and heifers like petting and some will come looking for attention, and are worse than dogs for licking.
Had a couple of ducks and they were nice as pets, but the fox found them as being nice dinner.

If they don't like you they'll ignore you, it takes time and effort to become close with a cat.

The dog is a pack animal, different mindset altogether.

I grew up with pets, then moved to Ireland and lived without one for some years because I didn't have the money and space and felt like something was missing until I eventually got my first cat ever. They are fantastic companions, even if so many people disagree.

I have a little guy too, and I love him to bits. He's sitting by the fire right now on his doggy bed. But no way would I let him n the bed. It's unhygienic, in my view.

    To each its own

I thought that too, but she had to live with a family member for a good while when I moved to a new place and she would still run to me when she saw me/ heard my voice.

I got a cat a couple of weeks ago. I never had pets growing up so this is a new experience.
At the moment he is sitting on my lap, he'll sit there until I move.
He likes to sit on my shoulder, he thinks that sometimes I am a pirate and he a parrot.
When I lie down, he will climb up onto my chest and put his nose about 1 inch from mine and go asleep.
He woke me up about 3 times last night just staring at me.
He's a little bollox. But he is adorable. I just wish he would annoy someone else in my family for a while.

This is my most favourite thing to talk about :) I have 2 cats and 1 dog. They are deadly. My dog is the best dog in the world. I am his most favourite person in his whole world. He gives the best hugs. We have the best chats. We go normal walking together every day and at the weekends we go get lost in the woods for a few hours. He's so cool

My cats are the most indignant, self righteous bundles of awesome furriness :D One of them has a meltdown if the food bowl is less than half full.

I had this cat years ago....I had rat poison down due to a rat infestation in the hen house. Anyway here I found my nice friendly cat walking and delighted with himself with the rat he had caught. I thought 'oh feck it is probably a poisoned rat' So I caught the cat by the neck (the loose skin) in the hope it would let go. He wouldn't let go and I couldn't get the rat from him.
I am glad the animal cruelty people weren't around or anyone that knew me as they would have thought I was being cruel or just gone crazy. I had to swing the cat by it's tail, the cat didn't seem to mind, it didn't want to let go of it's catch. I had to spin very fast with the cat before the rat came flying out of his mouth.
It was the only time I had to swing a cat by it's tail, but I had enough room to...

I used to have a pet cow. Many pet cows actually, but one long term pet. She was 14 years old when she left our farm and she was my baby from when she was about 8 days old. She was so so so intelligent. She knew what kiss was (touchy noses) she knew what a hug was (laying her head on my shoulder) and she was so gentle. Despite being about 10 times the size of me when she grew up. She was so gentle. She wouldn't whip her head, she had a cut on the inside part of her upper leg and I lay down underneath her to clean it. My father almost had a stroke when he saw where I was laying, because I was clearly hurting her and if she even moved her foot she'd have stood on my face, but she stood still as anything and didn't as much as flinch until I got up from underneath her. The same cow would have kicked my dad out of the shed if he had so much as touched her sore leg. She could take biscuits out of my mouth, her favourite food was jam on bread and chocolate moose, she liked strawberry complan too. She hated being lonely and she hated when I would give affection to anything else, only she was allowed be kissed and told she was the best mama cow. Super jealous.

The most surprising thing she ever done, was the summer before she left. My dad was very sick so I was helping on the farm. I was violently ill, puking up a storm. Could barely stand up straight. But, farming doesn't take any excuses, so I had to go help my dad. I was in the shed, practically crawled into her manger, and sat there leaning back on the wall. She came over to me, stood really really tight to me and put her giant big head right down on top of mine.
I don't know if she could tell I was really sick, but I definately believe she was trying to comfort me, she knew something was up.

God I loved her to bits

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,727 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

I have a cat, love him to bits. He is long haired which is a pain in April/May when he sheds buckets of hair all over the place. But in winter when his hair is fully grown back he looks like a minature lion, with the mane and all. He can be a little bollox sometimes, especially if I forget to clean out his litter tray- when this happens he lets me know by engaging in a dirty protest and ****ting on the kitchen floor. But I love him, he really can't do any wrong in my eyes.

I'd love to have a dog but havent got the space right now. But I'd never be without a cat even if I had a dog. They're such good company and not a day goes by where he doesn't make me smile for some reason or other.

Wouldn't be too worried about that. I've had one night stands. Slept in hotel beds. Ate food from kitchens or factories I've never seen. Handled money. Opened Doors, Touched buttons on elevators, gone on Airplanes etc. You can't fret too much about those things.

At least I know how often I clean my dog, where she goes, if she's been vaccinated, if she's sick etc.

We don't let her on the bed just because we're trying to keep her from jumping on things or jumping on people. A way to avoid her jumping on a kid or possibly getting on the bed to lick a baby in a crib beside our bed. She sleeps in her own bed by choice. She actually use to like to sleep under our bed but she's getting a little too big for that.

Hell, I've gone out with women who would go days without washing their hair. Multiple women, not just one. Don't know if it's an Irish thing or what...

A big black & white Collie/lab X. We love him to bits.

He's about 10 now and we got him from the rescue 5 years ago.

He has his funny little ways which make us laugh. Like if he goes in the car and we don't go anywhere for "Dog Fun", he won't get out of the car when we get home.

During stormy weather he will creep in and sleep beside us. Frightens the dickens out of the Mrs if she gets up in the night.

I have a black cat with big green eyes. She has a huge fluffy tail like a squirrel. I love her to bits.

I mean sure, I hate the way she bites my ankles when I get up to pee at 3am, and the way she always does a huge smelly poo in her litter box just when I'm about to serve dinner. But I couldn't be without her.

I have two african greys, Charlie and Ruby and Charlie is trying to woo Ruby at the moment. Today I heard him say "good boy Ruby" trying to flatter her :pac: I only ever say good girl to Ruby and good boy to Charlie so it was amazing to hear him connecting the two as a positive to say to his love. Ruby is having none of it though and huffs when he tries to interact with her. She refuses point blank to say his name and usually tells him "you're very bold" when he tries to get her attention. It's like she's playing hard to get :D

I also have three puppies who are just adorable little fluff balls.
