I found it pretty annoying at the start, the ad breaks, the complete lack of analysis, the switching channels at half time to allow 90 minutes of build up to Ireland matches that there was no need for anywhere near than much pre match buildup etc. etc.

But about half way through the second week I'd gotten used to it and accepted that I could go and do something else at half time because I wasn't going to be missing anything. I could go pee after the anthems because I know they're going to go straight to adds before kick off. I quickly found where to get the kind of analysis I wanted online after a match and have made do with that. The other presenter they have, not Cooper, is much better at using the small amount of time allocated to them for analysis and seems to have a much wider knowledge of the game in general. When Fiona Steed was on yesterday morning he was able to talk to her about the women's game in general, hosting the 2017 World Cup and a few other bits and pieces.

The only things that still slightly bug me are the Irish commentator that TV3 use, the world feed commentators are fine, and the way they cut to a break almost the second the final whistle goes, killing any kind of atmosphere, good or bad.

But all in all it could be a lot worse and by all accounts ITV are just as bad for the adverts although they may have slightly better analysts on occasionally.

You know what I am sick of all the complaints about TV3 and their coverage. You know what, they went and got the world cup, every game and put together a panel and package that was the best they could. RTE, who get out licence fee didnt do this and have steadily let all Sport go over the last few years so they can continue to fund the likes of Joe Duffy, Ray Darcy, Mirian O'Callaghan on discraceful wages. RTE are now at the point that they wont show a World Cup in a sport we may excel in. Of course we will get wall to wall coverage of a soccer world cup that we likely wont be at when Russia rolls round...so thank you TV3..without you we would be left watching it on ITV...RTE please pull your socks up and get your act together, you let premiership highlights go because 1.2m was too much to spend...again well done TV3..I for one have enjoyed the coverage...every channel shows adds and if thats what they need to do to pay for this coverage then I'm fine with it...if people want to complain they should complain to RTE and ask serious questions as to what the TV licence is spent on...

Yeah they went and got the world cup. They also hid their HD coverage behind a paywall. You have to pay Sky to watch TV3 in HD. Thanks for nothing.

I know HD is nicer to look at than standard but unless you're a very young kid it's not like you didn't spend most of your life looking at standard definition television. Is it really that big a deal?

their live player is disgracefully bad.

A massive difference. Can you remember what a well worn VHS tape looked like. That is what SD looks like when you have viewed sport in HD. And then you have 3E 'snow storm'definition which takes levels of S%&t to another level.

I watched a couple of matches on 3e and while you could clearly see a difference it wasn't unwatchable. Perhaps you need a better TV?

No. The TV is fine. If you can't tell the difference between HD and SD and whatever3E is shown in perhaps the problem might be on your side.
The HD coverage on ITV is very good and it will do for me.

Can I ask do you watch TV3HD via Sky or in SD on Saorview?

I stated you can clearly see the difference between the HD and 3e. It's not the unwatchable mess you describe though. I have UPC.

I have UPC also. I have a very new and pretty good TV and I have to say the difference between standard and HD is marginal. Its a bit of a gimmick I think.

the match commentator is a joke.
makes these ridiculous comments throughout the game as filler - idiot comments in fact.
    just shut it.
and learn the rules of the games.

    plank.

I thought the panel discussion yesterday was much improved for the "average" viewer. They still make it sound like a coaches meeting at time, but it was clear they were making some effort to dumb down the discussion and explain things.

The ad breaks and the main commentator are a joke, but this lark about HD is OTT. I don't see anything wrong with the picture. Complaining about not having HD is the ultimate in first world problems.

It's actually greatly improved since the first week if you're talking about the app. Much more stable and good picture quality.

If you think it's just a gimmick and a marginal difference there's something wrong your end.

As for first world problems, sure why even progress to colour TVs?

I don't see why all the hate for TV3 rugby

    the analysis is quite good

they paid big money for the tv rights, so have to make it back on advertising.
they don't have the funding that the tv licence brings in like RTE which helps shorten ad breaks

    Yes,

Either that or you think you have HD but don't.

You can have a HD TV but still not have an actual HD quality signal.

Oh, there is a difference alright but not one that would get me upset if I found a match was on a non HD channel - or that would persuade me to pay extra for Sky Sports HD channels.

Honestly, if you can't see a significant difference between HD and SD on a medium size TV, then something is wrong with your set-up.

To be fair the quality is below standard definition. It seems pixelated at times. Like watching a you tube video at 240p or something like that.

Changed onto itv one day and their quality was perfect.

When comparing a match on 3e (like second half of Italy-Romania or all of Japan-USA) and one on TV3HD (like Ireland-France), the difference should be night and day. It was for me, with UPC. Hate to ask, but you're definitely on channel 150, not 103?

The problem with comparing TV3 HD to SD is that TV3 HD is below par thanks to compression and other techniques. If you load up an MKV of an SD movie on your TV, and one of the same movie in 1080p, there's no way you'll ever want to see the SD quality picture again. I think the same is mostly true of sports.

you could also have eyesight issues if you can't tell the difference between SD and HD, don't mean to worry you but my girlfriend cant tell the difference and she is slightly short sighted

Thanks for the advice and concern. It isn't a question of there being a difference (of course there is) but if that difference matters as much as some people think.

I have a top of the range TV and I can see a golf ball 300 yards away so I think it is just more likely that it takes more to get me excited about a screen than some people.

It doesnt make one bit of difference to my enjoyment of a game to watch it in SD
HD is for saps with more money than sense, enjoy getting bent over by sky and the TV companies lads, theres more than one born every minute thats for sure

There are some things on TV that look better with HD - nature programmes are an example. It makes very little difference with sport.

If you can't see the difference you probably need a new tv.
