Steve Stauntons reign as Ireland manager (2006-2007) was pretty darn brutal.

In Europe, (we'll take the Nazi's as a given) Ceaușescu's Romanian rule turned out to be a poison chalice. Pretty brutal.

Ceaucescu's regime was a nasty piece of work. The irony is he started off when he assumed power as a moderate (he even opposed the USSR invasion of then Czechoslovakia) but legend has it a visit to North Korea changed his views and he after 7 years of moderate policies turned into one of the most hardline, repressive regimes in Eastern Europe and the biggest personality cult in Europe for decades.

Albania's Enver Hoxha is another guy who deserves a mention. He totally impoverished his country just like Ceaucescu and Milosevic would do to their later.

Having being to Albania, it's weird seeing the signs of Hoxha's paranoia with the bunkers he built still all over the country and in the weirdest places. Remember being on a lovely beach and right in the middle of it was a bunker, that was slowly being eroded. The country is still recovering from his rule, but it really is well worth visiting before it becomes completely touristy as it is truly beautiful.

Don't agree there Ted. You should ask yourself would you prefer China or Russia to be the dominant power and then you might know what destruction and misery would actually be like.

At least the US is a democracy.
US is not a democracy, it's a two party state. And both parties would be far right on a European scale.

Look at South America and the number of regimes overthrown. Or look at Iran before the Shah. US has previously helped most of the groups it's now fighting against. Guess who gave arms and training to the Vietnamese ?

The Iron Rule of Kenny shall go down as one of the bloodiest and brutal in Irelands history.

Haughty played the game back in the day of bringing in guns for the IRA which led to split and formation of PIRA with the resultant effect of ratcheting up the troubles, which was a nice little side show to deflect attention on social issues and rampant corruption.
Social protest groups such as the DHAC where also smeared as being subversive.

There's strong similarities now the current political situation with the constant sniping at SF leading to turmoil in the north and water protestors under surveillance and trumped up charges. The result of this is an increase in support for the government.

True. The US supported what would become al Qaeda and ISIS during and after the cold war. The Shah of Iran meanwhile became a liability to the US when he started to expand relations with communist countries. The US often pretends to be enemies of countries at actually really has secret relations with. It is all about oil, arms and cash.
