Who do you think Tattoos suit better?

I'm male and have no tattoos. I wouldn't rule out getting a tattoo in future tough. It would have to mean something to me tough. Personally myself I would get a tattoo that could be covered up easily but it would be visible when I wanted it to be.
    Probably wouldn't get one.
I know a few people who got religious tattoos and they wouldn't be religious tough and they just got them for the sake of it. My least favourite type of tattoos are of cartoons/out of play station games/etc.
I think tattoos suit men better than women.(this is just in my experience)

If there was a 'doesn't suit either' option, I'd have picked that

If you're not a sailor or circus freak no tattoo for you.

Seriously somebody needs to write the rules for these things.

I go through phases of wanting to get a giant colourful dragon sleeve tattoo.

Thankfully the phases only last about 10 seconds before I think: "Nah..."

It depends entirely on the quality and style of the tattoo itself.

A crap tattoo will look crap on either gender. A brilliant tattoo will look good on either gender - if you like tattoos, that is.

I've got 5, and am happy with them. All of them are very easily covered, as I want them to be. Most people think they suit me.

How about everybody sticks their pathetically judgemental opinions on other people's tattoos up their holes and how about anyone getting a tattoo makes up their own minds, 'coz if you need the opinions of others then permanent decoration isn't for you.

A good tattoo looks well on either gender I think.
Things like tribal designs and names in Chinese can fck right off though

Tattoos look dreadful on any gender, in my opinion. I can't understand why anyone would want to maim themselves with them.

Each to their own but cant understand the attraction, its like having a uniform that you cant take off.

Very few tattoos look good initially but after 15 -20 years generally they look awful. Worst is seeing old tattoos on women IMO.

It's possible you don't know how tattoos work. The body part with the tattoo remains attached to the body.

I don't have a sleeve and wouldn't get one, but in 20/30/40 years, we're going to be old and unattractive, so I doubt we'll worry too much about what our tattoos look like!

I understand where you're coming from but I think the OP is asking the question in a modern context. Attitudes from a century ago may not apply.

I've noticed a lot of people who don't like tattoos are very concerned with how people will look naked when they're 80!

Tbh if my tatts look crap when I'm 80, I'll probably forget about them and just be shocked I'm still alive, given the lifestyle I lead!

I'm 33, got a full sleeve tattoo aged 30 (my first tattoo!). I work for a large software company and wear shirts to work. Nobody I work with knows I have any tattoo. I think if a tattoo is well done, it can look great on either gender. Most importantly, it's a persons own choice but as "Jotunheim" said above, if you're here for opinions, it's probably not for you!!!

    I don't always speak to non-tattoed people..... but when I do, I don't judge them :)

Ah, I see. You don't understand something unless it's stated in very plain English. Here - I do not believe they suit one gender over another.

I would have picked the 'neither' option if it was there.

I suppose some scruffy men can get away with them but on women they're terrible. It's an instant turn off to see a gorgeous woman with manky looking tramp stamp or similar.

Jeez, calm down. Her answer was very valid. There's a poll up there to answer the question posed by the OP. Sure if the only thing to do on thread is to say women or men the poll would be sufficient to find the answer.

Jenny was providing an opinion on her views... Far more engaging than just saying men or women. This is a discussion board, no? Sounds to me like you have a problem with the poster

    Enough already.

I generally think that back when every man, woman and goat didn't have a tattoo they looked better. Every eejit has one now.

The look awful on women, common and cheap they're not called tramp stamps for nothing.

They also tend to not suit guys with ruddy, freckled Celtic skin.

I've never even seen the dude's username before, so unless he's a re-reg, I dunno how he'd have a problem with me :pac:

Maybe it's because I'm female and tattooed. Cause they obviously look so much better on men. :D

    In 20 years! Oh no!!

Ha ha, that is ****ing bargain.

If you're worried today about what you'll look like in 20 years let's have a think again about who's beyond sad.

Tattoos on women aren't called tramp stamps, just to point out. Only ones on the lower back, primarily done on women, are called tramp stamps. :)

This is clearly an issue that people who like tattoos will say they look good on either sex and those who don't like them will say neither.

I personally don't like tattoos or have any but they have been in fashion for 20 years and to say that they are a 'tramp stamp' for females or suited only to criminals or soldiers is just ridiculous in this day and age.

It's all about personal choice and taste and no need to judge people because of them.

Yawn. Take yourself off somewhere more "exciting" so, you've managed to take the thread far off topic. Have a drink, chill, it will do you good, and do us here even better

Tattoos can look OK on either gender when they are still relatively young. But they look ridiculous on older people. Years ago a person might have one or two tattoos so when they got older it wouldn't be too bad. Still looked horrible though. To me of course. But these days the coverage of the tattoos is mad. Entire arms with sleeves and ones down the back or chest. Will look stupid on older skin.

Getting a tattoo is effectively a bet with yourself that your tastes and aesthetic preferences will never change. As anyone who bought a Linkin Park album in the early 2000s can testify, this is rarely the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,453 ✭✭✭Shenshen

Interesting question, I'd never thought about that before.

I would say that generally, tattoos on women tend to look nicer. But I think that's mostly down to the motives that women tend to choose vs the motives men tend to go for.

Anything original and well thought out would look good on either gender, but then most tats you come across would really be chosen from catalogues. I know few enough people who went to the trouble of actually designing their tattos.
And when it comes to those catalogue motives, women tend to go for decorative and men tend to go for macho/trying to be shocking. And to my eyes, a little tribal wrapped around an ankle or a few stars running down a neck do tend to look better than a flaming skull on a shoulder blade.
But that's really just my own, subjective taste.

Well, when you think about it, so is marriage, really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,648 ✭✭✭desertcircus

It's also a fairly heavy bet that the meaning attributed to your tattoo will never change. Like a Confederate flag tattoo done in the seventies, or a Lostprophets tattoo from ten years ago.

True, but most reputable tattooists won't just slap one on you the day you walk in the door.
When I got mine, I sat down with the artists, I showed him my drawing, explained where I wanted it. He went over the lines, told me what would be possible and what not, and then sent me away to come back in 2 weeks if I still wanted it then.

Seemed a bit silly at the time as I had worked on that drawing for around 2 years beforehand (and it's really only a fairly small tattoo), but I think it was quite a responsible way of conducting business.

I've nothing against tattoos, but I've yet to be inspired enough by anything to warrant me representing it as a tattoo. If that ever happens I would have no issue getting a tattoo.

I have one tattoo, and my partner has four. We're both women. I think that tattoos suit both genders, it's like asking if clothes suit men or women better, obviously they suit both but depends on what someone is wearing. I feel the same about tattoos, they suit both but peoples' tastes differ and so there are tattoos that I like and ones that I don't. My partner looks amazing with her tattoos. As for when I'm old and wrinkly, well I'll be lucky to reach my 40s so I'm not too concerned to be honest :p

Love Tattoo's myself , I have 3 with one of them with one being a half sleeve. Thankfully where I work the Taboo of anyone who has a tattoo isn't present in the company or majority of people here as the usual 'He must be a scumbag' or a 'criminal' or any of that garbage, It's a large multinational company as well very much on the high end and I mostly wear shirts but 2 days a week or so I wear t-shirts, during the summer and nobody bats an eyelit or says anything about it, I meet clients like that as well and funny enough they don't think I am going to kill them or rape their cats because I have them.

And even if they did , I wouldn't really care...this is what I like and who I am and I'm good at my job , that's more important than what's on my arms.

    Poll need a 'both' option.

I think there are places where a lot of tattoos won't look good, like on the chest. I like sleeve ones, personally.

I'm thinking of getting another one or two myself, but I haven't come up with any design I like enough yet.

Same here, you should subscribe to r/tattoos on reddit to see some amazing pieces. I've a few artists bookmarked in case I am ever inspired :)

This is one of my favourites done by a guy in Sweden, I really like the style and details plus it's not too colourful. I don't like too much colour in a tattoo.

I've got two tattoos, both of which I spent months thinking about, planning and preparing. I love them both.

I don't think you can really slap a gender view on tattoos. An arm is an arm. It's like asking do jeans look better on men or women.

And the "what about when you're older?" Argument never made sense to me. Why do you care what other people look like? They're not there for you to look at, or there for your amusement so who gives a ****? In any case, all bodies age, not just the tattooed ones. I know if I saw an 80 year old with a load of tattoos I'd think to myself "oh look. An older person with tattoos. Cool." Just like if I saw an older people with a Mohawk, or wearing skinny jeans or whatever. People worry far too much about what other people are thinking about them. I feel sorry for people like that.
