Thanks so much for the advice guys :) I see you can have consultations with lactation specialists before birth, do you think that would be better than the normal breast feeding classes? I seem to be working myself up over this for some reason :S I really want to get it to work!

Honestly, I don't see how a class beforehand works. Every baby and birth is different. I would probably see how it goes and try to get the lactation nurse working in the maternity hospital to come to you and help you latch your newborn on. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. It's a lovely and natural thing to do if you can but see how it goes once the baby arrives.

    hi,

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who needs to look up a list for what to pack, I can not for the life of me remember what I need to bring.

I bought one of them yoga / birthing balls. when should we start using it? do we just bounce up and down on them? they remind me of the space hoppers from when we were kids

No 17th here. I want to get my ball out soon too. I used to his bounce on it on and off when I was chatting to someone or watching telly. Last baby was head down the entire time and came a week early but took almost 24hrs to arrive once contractions started. Dreading that again so I'm going to bounce her little head down! :)

I must put one of those yoga balls on the list! Hey just on vaccines - has anyone gotten/is planning to get the whooping cough vaccination? Went to get it yesterday in my GPs and there was a big mix up (apparently they don't stock it, which no one told me about when I made the appointment, got given a prescription for it then and the chemist said they literally never have it in stock and don't ever get asked for it?) - is it totally out of the ordinary for me to want to get it?

It's recommended for everyone here between 28 and 32 weeks but they'll do it later if needed - I got mine at 30 weeks at my GPs.

I got it done at 27 weeks. It's recommended now as your newborn will not have immunity to the virus.

I'm in he same boat, TheIronyMaiden, it's my first as well and I'm determined to do everything I can to help breastfeeding.Im going to do the free class the midwives do and I'm thinking of booking a lactation consultant to come to me when I get out of hospital, it's a bit prices but sure it's the baby's food after all!My nearest lactation consultant does classes beforehand for a fee but I'm in two minds.

Yeah, from what I've gathered, you're better off to spend the money afterwards if things aren't going too well rather than before - hopefully of course we're worrying for nothing and the little babas are perfect feeders :)

I have to start getting a move on with the hospital/baby bag - I was gripped with a (hopefully totally irrational) fear of going into labour really early (I'm 31 almost 32 weeks now so not miles off) - think I'll feel better after I get that sorted!

No idea. I'm intrigued why you ask though?

Had my consultant appt today (29 wks) and the little monkey has her head up under my ribs and feet are down. Got my husband to blow up my yoga ball tonight so I'll be bounce happy for the next 10 weeks! I also emptied my parents attic yest and brought back all the neutral baby stuff.... Had no idea that I had so much!!!

Ive started to get everything together now, I def feel better for it.Im a bit OCD anyway so it's helping me feel more relaxed!I tend to pick up a few things every few days on my lunch hour, it helps that it's not overwhelming !The checklist on EUMom.ie was helpful

I was off today and washed all of my sons baby clothes... The house is a sea of teeny tiny white clothes. I'm a bit ocd too so delighted to be getting organised.

Feels good to get started anyway.Im thinking of doing 3 separate bags, labour, baby and maternity ward bags. do you think this is a bit much?none of them are huge I just want to make sure I can find everything when I need to!
Ordered my buggy last week, it's actually a bit sad how excited I am about it, it's like a new car or something!😂

I did this last night, got out all the white / yellow stuff and washed it, but I have nothing in 0-3, I'm not sure what baba wore for the first 3 months of her life!!

    Hi Everyone,
Is it ok if I join in at this late stage? Have to admit to lurking a little on this thread (I'm due my first on April 23rd) as I was feeling superstitious about joining in again properly after I did so previously and ended up having two mc's last year. At almost 29 weeks now though and I'm determined to be positive and try to worry as little as possible (that's still quite a lot tho!). Have started to let myself buy some baby clothes recently and we ordered the nursery furniture and buggy last weekend which was exciting and has definitely helped get it into my head that this is really happening! Eek!
Have a question for you all though - is anyone else struggling with low iron levels? Mine weren't great to start with and have been steadily dropping each time they've been checked despite taking an iron supplement and being completely sick of eating red meat and lentils/avoiding caffeine and dairy etc. Just wondering if anyone has any experience / tips about this they could share?
    Thanks a mil,
    Roll on April!

    Welcome!

I have low iron all the time since a big blood loss on my first, how long have you been taking the tablets now? I started taking mine again last week and I take it with orange juice to make sure it'll all fully absorbed.

We have a facebook group you're welcome to join if you wanna pm me your details!

    Thanks javagal, I'll do that!
I've been taking ferrograd c since I had my booking bloods taken and have now added hemoplex in addition. Hoping that'll do the trick over the next two weeks before my next appointment as I'm worried they will switch me from the domino scheme to hospital appts if it doesn't improve.

So I had a scan today (extra one on account of the gestational diabetes), and at 32+3 weeks, apparently she's already 5 pounds 4 ounces?! I wasn't weighed though so they must estimate that from measurements alone? I asked was that a normal size and was told (kinda ominously) that it was normal "for now"...has anyone else got any weights for their little ones yet?! I seem to be on track for a nine or ten pounder :O

Both last time and this time, my consultant has refused to comment on weight saying its not a pure science and not always indicative of birth weight. They've told me they'd tell me if it was on the extreme big or extreme small size. I feel huge but was told by a few family members yesterday that I'm near enough. 10 weeks left as if today. :)

I'm in the same boat IronyMaiden. You're not alone! I'm due late March and had a scan at 32+3 last week and got told a similar weight. Also that the baby has a big head! The big head thing wasn't a massive surprise given I've a monstrously sized head myself :D

There's definitely a degree of inaccuracy in the weight they measure in the scan from what I've read so have been trying to relax after an initial freak out! The doctor did think briefly about have me do the gestational diabetes test after they saw the scan results but decided it was unnecessary.

I think its based on a formula which combines different measurements of the head, femur etc so if your baby is just tall or has a big head etc this will be reflected in it.

Then again my younger sister was well over 10 pounds at birth so there's also a history of monster babies in the family... Eep!

got told my first was huge too and I didn't take any notice to doctor, not that they were bringing me in any earlier because of it.
    She was almost 10lb 😂

Ouch! Mine was only 7lb 10...I'm aiming for that again :)

Nobody has mentioned baby's weight to me at all, but I do find it strange that they don't keep track of my own weight? I had been expecting to be weighed at every hospital appt, but so far I've only been weighed at my booking appt. I've no idea how much I've put on, I'm afraid to go near the scales at home! Its not something I'm worried about but just thought it was something the docs and midwives would keep a track of, is this the same practice where you guys are?

Hmm, now that you mention it I'm actually only weighed during my blood tests for gestational diabetes - never during normal appointments. They must not consider tracking weight a priority unless there's some other red flag in your pregnancy (like the diabetes in mine).

Well I'm very glad to hear I'm not the only one with a potentially big baba! Was kinda hoping to see how I got on without an epidural but with a 9 or 10 pound baby I might not have a choice :P

Completely butting in from June thread but my April 2013 baba was a 9pounder, super fast labour with no epidural - it can happen yet! I had zero clue of her weight beforehand infact my bump always measured behind but she's tall!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭Mac0783

My weight is measured at every hospital appointment (unfortunately) :( but no one has measured my bump yet, last baba 7lb 11, think this baba definitely going to be over 8

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Mine was taken at my booking appointment but not measured since then. Keeping track myself though, I'm up 13kg so far which is probably a little more than I should be at 34 weeks. Bump is right on track though apparently.

I have to say I really, really like hearing stories like that :P I think I have it built up in my head that because this is my first it'll be a monstrous labour but then of course you hear stories like yours where the labour flies!
I have a doctors appointment on Thursday so I'll use that to calm some of my fears!
Hope everyones doing well otherwise :)
