Hi all, I sold a rifle over a year ago to a boards member. This morning I received a letter in post for the renewal of said firearm. Is this usual procedure? Thanks

I have gotten a couple of these, it's not common, but they do happen.

Did you substitute the license to another gun or cancel it? If so then simply return the FCR, unsigned, with a separate piece of paper on which you'll state:
    • That the license was substituted - Provide a copy of your current/new license
    • That the license was cancelled - No document to provide as it should be on PULSE

DO NOT sign the FCR as you're accepting that the details are correct is you do. Just return it with the info above and they should sort it themselves.

Didn't substitute, just a straight sale. Thinking of purchasing again soon so want to keep everything above board. Thanking you Cass.

It says on the front of the FCR that if you do not intend to renew to contact your local station immediately. Your license will remain valid until it expires but then it's done.

However as you sold your one you would have either subbed it or cancelled it. If you did not sub and did cancel it then you just need to ring your station and inform them of the mistake. If you still have the license on the gun you sold, which is legal afaik, then ring them to say you don't intend to renew. Then let it lapse naturally.

You should fill out an FCA2 form and bring it to the station with you. They will just ask you to do this anyway. For anyone thinking when they sell a gun privately that your licence is cancelled automatically, this is not the case ( it should be), you must fill out the FCA2 to cancel it or you will get a renewal when its due.

Ordinarily you're right, but when it comes to FCR (automated renewals) they will not accept FCA1 or FCA2s in place of the FCR.

It says on the front of the FCR if not renewing to notify your local Garda station immediately. Maybe you're right, but i've already been told (in the same position a couple of years ago) that only the FCR would do. They cancelled it through the FCR.
