Could just be easily someone with a beef with religion. But that does not sell papers or rabble rouse. Maybe catch the guy and find out ?

The radio said the police believe it's politically motivated. But that doesn't sell radios or something.

    Thoughts with the families.

Now with this be claimed as a race issue or gun control issue?

What I've heard is it was a black church congregation, one of the oldest and most famous in the South of the US and the gunman was white.

Heard the same, Does not automatically make it a hate crime. As I said could be to do with Religion or any number of things. They have not even caught the guy, So unless they have information they are not releasing I will wait and see before announcing this or that.

The pastor/Reverend, who was among the dead, was a state senator.

This is very true. So in that regard given the number of high profile "race" related news stories lately. Is there a race problem in the states or is it a social deprivation problem involving african americans?

Considering he said the following "You're taking over our country. You have to go" I think it safe to assume he wasn't on about Christians.

This is pic of the suspect. Top flag on his jacket is old South African Flag.

Looks likely to be a White Supremacist terrorist. I remember the last one carrying out an attack on a Sikh Temple.

A life sentence with no parole on a prison wing full of African American inmates is exactly what this sicko deserves!

The Charleston Police Chief and The FBI have already identified this as a hate crime, but I'll just sit back and watch posters argue over how this wasn't a hate crime. Without historical or cultural context or knowledge.

Terrible for the congregation to have lost their pastor, the very person you would turn to for guidance and support at a time like this, in the attack.

That picture of the shooter made me very sad and uncomfortable. He's so young to be driven by so much hate. You'd wonder if he was a member of some kind of group where he absorbed all this rhetoric from older people or if he hid his views from everyone.

The second flag on his jacket looks like the Nigerian flag, but he's hardly wearing a Nigerian flag?

Sure of course you're going to have a few 'winners' if you back every white on black crime as 'hate crime'. De'marquise Elkins ...cough...cough

Pretty much. Plus only a white supremacist would have such an awful haircut.

So sad he was obviously very ill and disturbed. He was given the gun as a gift apparently from an Uncle. I find that crazy. He has radical racist beliefs. One of the flags was a pre-aparthied south African flag. Very sad.

Well the target could have been the senator, And comments about taking over the country. But that's not ruling out hate crime via race or religion either. Seems odd the guy stayed an hour in there like he was making sure of something.

Fair play to the cops, thought it might be another Eric Frein. Still expect some to suggest he wouldn't be taken alive if he was black.

Apparently he sat in the church for nearly an hour before opening fire. He left a couple alive so they could tell everyone what he did. Bizarre, hateful stuff.

Racism very much alive and well in the States.

Nothing wrong with crimes being termed hate crimes; there is a hell of a lot wrong with hate crimes being legislated for.

The first port of call often seems to be mental health when the shooting is carried out by a white person. If he was of a darker complexion, I'm sure the discussion would be very different.

Th irony that the black people's ancestors were brought to the US as slaves while his most likely chose to move there and wiped out millions of the real natives is totally lost on this murderous fucking nerd, no doubt.

I don't think the amount of melanin or lack thereof is going to change the smell of burning hair and flesh when he's been in the chair. All evil bastards the same to Lady Justice. She's no racist.

I noted the earlier statement from police that they had no reason to believe he was no longer in Charleston. Clearly they knew he had left and wanted to put him at a false sense of ease. This Shelby place is 240 miles away seemingly. I take my hat off to them.

Seems to me that the After Hours outrage brigade, you know, the ones that are always ranting about how political correctness is conspiring with the librul meeja to do them down and repress their rights, are notably silent on this case of mass murder by an alleged white perp where the victims were all black.

40 or so replies about this level of slaughter kinda sums up the sheer boredom we have with American shootings.

Race will dominate the discussion, but gun control is the real problem.

Do they? Fox News were very keen to play up the race and hate crime aspect, but all three interviewers went as quiet as mice when a black pastor briefly mentioned gun control during an interview early - they said absolutely nothing when the interview ended and cut to an ad for Fox "Fair and Balanced". :pac:

I'd say race was a real problem in the United States these days. Not to downplay guns obviously - but murderous thoughts are at the root of this not guns.

Obama grabbing the nettle of guns, pointing words used "Mass shooting like this don't happen in other advanced countries" or "With this frequency". Also said "Another person had no problem getting hold of a gun when they needed one". Not direct quotes just the jist.

I fear I may be a member of your imagined 'brigade' Sir!

I think the media is, on the whole, biased toward a liberal/left view in western countries sadly and I have no time for politically correct thinking.

There is no need to be outraged by this. It is one guy. I have already stated I'm delighted to see the bastard fry.

See the reason is - I'm not as bothered by skin colour as you, or indeed that Roof nut, is.

There is the usual ignorance of Irish people toward the American south and its people displayed on AH again. FFS somebody even chimed in with a reference to 'good ole boys':cool: My advice: get back to watching Deliverance, the Blues Brothers, or other such "documentaries". Or if you want to educate yourself and earn a valid opinion, save for a trip around the south.

Race is a problem but it's hardly ethnic cleansing either. It's an entirely isolated incident.

The root of the problem is most certainly guns - murderous thoughts alone expressed in that church means that white guy wakes up in hospital this morning, not a murderer.

Waiting for more to arrive...working up the nerve.....maybe praying to Aryan Jesus....

"According to federal law enforcement officials, the gunman made racist comments before he started shooting inside the church.
Roof sat in the back of the room for about an hour, these officials said, and some people in the Bible study group encouraged him to join the discussion. Before he began firing a semiautomatic handgun, Roof said something that the officials described as hateful racial epithets.
Officials said that the gunshots were fired at close range, rather than a random spray of gunfire across the room. There was no warning, no threat to the church, beforehand, the officials said."
