If it was easy nobody would have a beer belly.

With men, the belly is the first place for weight to be visible and the last place for it to be lost when losing weight.

An adjustment in your diet should see a reduction in overall body weight and a visible reduction in the beer belly but once the belly is gone don't expect a 6 pack to be there if you're not doing any exercise.

in relation to diet,in the past i have reduced the amount that i eat but binge over the weekend,i feel like i deserve a reward after a hard weeks work, find it very difficult to diet.

Spread the 'effort' more evenly throughout the week. There's no point eating like a sparrow five days a week if it leaves you ravenous and demoralised by the weekend.

Eating well also doesn't have to mean going hungry all the time. Learn to love green veg and use them to make your meals bigger without adding much in the way of calories.

Also, sit ups do not get rid of a beer belly.

Dieting doesn't mean starving yourself and being miserable, and he did say adjust not cut it all out
Eat plenty of meat and veg and a bit less bread and pasta if applicable. And maybe adjust your thinking about food as a reward. E.g., is it really a reward if you feel crap afterwards. or find nicer things you could bake yourself for example.

good point...and again rewarding yourself is allowed too. its a weird one, but you as individual know your own body and you know what you are eating, there is no hard and fast rule. be sensible and have a varied diet

You should look into couch25k. It's a pretty fantastic program, specially designed for those who would not be runners. It's a 9 week program that would end in you being able to jog 5k without stopping. I'm coming up to week 7 and the difference in my general well-being and health is crazy.

I do not find alcohol has much effect on my weight, studies have shown in heavy drinkers the calories have far less impact than from the likes of sugary foods.

But if you are drinking you might visit a chipper or gorge on stuff at home while drunk.

Alcohol means extra calories? big meals too
Salty food keeps water / poor or damaged kidneys and liver keeps water too
    All together = big belly

Vegetable as carrots and any sugar/sweets intake increasing insulin production and appetite/hunger
Extra food go to be stored as a fat on your belly

Eating a sweet/sugar or fatty food separately - no problem, it goes into blood/energy and not much impact or you can loose weight too
Eating sweet/sugar+fat together is bad, you gain weight

    There's no salt in beer.
Beer doesn't give you a beer belly.
"Water keeping kidneys and liver" doesn't give you a beer belly either.

If you are dieting and then bingeing at the weekends bit still lossing weight then thats fine. Keep track of your weight weekly and find out. Theres no point putting in the effort during the week if you ruin it at the weekend. Whats your binge like on a weekend. I can have a few beers and a meal out without it doing any harm.

I was in this position last Christmas maybe my experience might offer some help

I was training but couldn't loose the weight.
    I was 80kg and 5,6 height.
Desperately unhappy and fed up, suffering IBS stress and overall being fed up.

During my S&C training with the club I failed 4/6 flexibility and balance tests.
I was speaking with a friend and he advised me to watch my sugar intake.

This got me thinking and I was stunned when I researched the effects of Sugar. Obviously I knew fizzy drinks etc were bad but it was the amounts of Sugar in other processed foods that amazed me.

I cut out Sugar and the weight just fell off me I dropped down to 64kg in 2 months.
Added to that my training went up several levels, I completed the Dingle Adventure race 47k, .

Cut out Sugar and the beer belly will go.
80% diet and 20% exercise in my opinion.

    Hope this helps..

The best way to loose a beer belly is to stop pouring beer into it.

Only hard diet and a lot of exercise will help you lose that beer belly....

    Already using it!

I just focus on the calories bit. I guess I should focus more on sugar!

Forget the Apps and start reading the labels.
If you don't understand the ingredients on the labels then don't buy it.

Simple rule Sugar is in pretty much all processed foods.

Start cooking you're own meals that way you will know exactly what you're eating.

It takes work but eventually it becomes easier.

I tend not to eat processed food, and I cook my own fresh meals. It's the snacking that kills me.

    What do you snack on?

All manner of crap. Crisps, chocolate, etc. It's no mystery why I put on weight.

On the plus side, since I started using the calories app, my consumption of garbage has reduced significantly.

I'll use that running app that was recommended next. Sounds like what I need.

Dude, you said you tend not to eat processed food, but snacking is eating so you do eat processed foods!

Cut out all processed food. All of it. Just don't buy it. You don't need to check labels if there are no labels :)

It can be really tough, but if you have healthy alternatives at hand it can be done, do it for a while and you won't want the crap any more.

Hahaha! Sorry, you're right. I meant when I make a meal, it's from scratch with raw ingredients. But yeah, snacks are processed as hell. I'm trying to cut down, and I've done better, of late.

Buy berries, nuts, naked bars. Make crudites and health dips to fill you up.

You could try mountain biking, its fun, very high impact cardiovascular excercise, your basically working every joint and muscle in your body on the climbs and decents, by carrying your own weight up steep hills and down over roots and rocks, its great, there's no need to go fast downhil either.

Obviously running is way more focused on the legs, so your upper body strenght won't improve and your belly won't do down, if you just run and don't do any other excerise.

If you remember the 80/20 rule you will see improvement.
    80% Diet 20% exercise.
All the running in the world won't matter if you're not eating correctly.

You could lie in bed all day every day and as long as you eat fewer calories than you consume then your body fat will go down. This is very basic biology and you shouldn't be giving out advice if you don't even know that much.

Obviously exercise is necessary for overall health but being a healthy weight is about caloric intake.

    Eh? Not really.
There's some upper body required, but not every muscle. And there a pretty big lower lower body bias, and within that an anterior bias.
As for joints, upper boast joints more through a tiny range of there ROM. Hip extension is limited ROM.
Obviously running is way more focused on the legs, so your upper body strenght won't improve and your belly won't do down, if you just run and don't do any other excerise.
That's not true. Burning fat from an area of your body has nothing to do with the area you are working.

Cycling is zero impact. You're off the ground.
I'm not even going to address the rest of your posts because others already have.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,791 ✭✭✭JJJJNR

Zero impact? your bouncing your bike off rocks, trees and boulders, thats high impact and will strenghten your joints, and improve your upper body strenght, its low impact on your legs as its the upper body that is doing all the work when you are trying to steer the bike downhill at speed. Its a full core workout, whoever thinks its not is doing it wrong.

What you are saying is still nonsense, if he burns more calories that he ingests then he will lose the belly, it doesn't matter if it is diet or exercise, or what that exercise is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Alzo90

Its probably best to introduce resistance training (weight training, body weight training) and aerobic and anaerobic conditioning (cycling, running, sprinting, swimming) while on the caloric deficit to minimize muscle loss. It will probably make you feel really good aswell unless there is something wrong with your diet or recovery or bloods.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,791 ✭✭✭JJJJNR

Its not nonsense at all, you need a full body work out to loose your belly fat, running alone won't help.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,112 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

Good advice, I'm on a 160000 calorie deficit in the last year and you do notice the muscle loss (weak like baby), do some work to prevent it now and again.
