Those low flying planes and noisy buses might have burst his ear drums. Maybe that's what happened before he left Dublin to go to New York. It may have started a progressive deterioration in his hearing which eventually led to him not hearing the guy with the gun approach him. Aer Lingus and Dublin Bus have a lot to answer for.
