White woman 'pretends' to be black – for several years *Mod warning in OP*

    Mod note:

This thread has nothing to do with transgender issues. Any posts about transgender issues in this thread will be infracted.

A white woman in the US has been exposed as having pretended to be black (or African-American, as she self-identified) for the past several years.

The parents of Rachel Dolezal have come out and said that she began to “disguise herself” as black around 2006 or 2007.

“It’s very sad that Rachel has not just been herself... Her effectiveness in the causes of the African-American community would have been so much more viable, and she would have been more effective if she had just been honest with everybody”, her mother said.

“She's our birth daughter and we're both of European descent... we're puzzled and it's very said”, said her father.

Dolezal is the president of the Spokane, Washington, chapter of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). She is also Adjunct professor of 'Africana studies' at Eastern Washington University. According to her biography on the Eastern Washington University website, “at least eight documented hate crimes targeted Dolezal and her children during her residency in North Idaho”.

Photos have emerged of Dolezal as a young woman, with straight, blonde hair. Also, in an interview with KXLY 4, she is shown a picture of her white father, and asked straight up if she is African-American. She freezes, avoids the question and walks away.

It's at 8 minutes 15 seconds into this video.

Does anyone else feel that what this woman has done is unbelievably disrespectful to the black community in America? Photos of her as a young woman show that she does not in any way look like a person of colour, but has unnaturally curled her hair and somehow pretended that she comes from the same background as most black Americans? Why on earth would a white person be the subject of 'hate crimes', unless they were because she was white (and the biography certainly doesn't present it that way)?

The woman is either mentally ill, or someone who who wanted to embrace the idea of black Americans as permanent victims with unkempt hair. Every year, around Halloween, Native American and First Nation people in North America come out and say, “please don't dress like us... our culture is not a costume”.

Yet clearly, this woman thought black culture was a costume, that she could wear for the past 8 or 9 years! It boggles the mind!

Michael Jackson said it best.. It doesn't matter if you're black or white.. ;)

So long as you're white... If you're black you better start being white!

It doesn't boggle the mind and isn't disrespectful. White people have been influenced by black culture in America for the past 50 years. Who cares if she wants to live her life as a black woman? It's better than living her life as a hate filled racist bigot who thinks white people are superior than black people.

Looks white to my untrained eye.

    Who exactly did she fool?

Ooooh, I was wondering if this would make international news. Needless to say, we believe she's mentally ill. She says she was the subject of hate crimes because she's black, yet none of the hate crimes could ever be proven (also, I think she's wearing a wig, if I'm not mistaken). She also lied about her "black son" (turns out it was her adopted brother) and on and on.

As for being disrespectful to the black community? I have a feeling she has a really bizarre idea of how to help the black community. I do know that the police sergeant, who works with the Idaho organization she claimed she was director of (she's wasn't, btw), said she had to sever ties with her because they had different philosophies of how to solve racial problems.

I am very confused, I thought "Black" and "White" were colours?

Maybe she just felt African American since birth and wanted to go through the change. Bruce Jenner has been praised for his transformation, why not this lady?

Self identify as the opposite sex. Let's all march for your right to do that!!

Self identify as a different skin colour. Boo hisss racist offensive!!!

It's all or nothing folks, if I want to choose velociraptor as my Facebook gender it really shouldn't be any of your concern if I choose European velociraptor or African velociraptor. Get over it.

    Lol.

Yeah men are becoming women and it's accepted as normal. A man says he was meant to be born a women. If we're believing that cock-and-bull story then anything goes.

How peculiar. Reminds me of that Philip Roth novel The Human Stain. The main character in that was a black man trying to pass himself off as a white Jewish man. Odd stuff.

Well if she has a black adopted brother you can see where this could come from.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,730 ✭✭✭Sheep Lover

Everyone should have known she wasn't black, she ain't got the black person funk. A simple test of how well she danced would have cleared things up.

    Looks Jewish to me.

MOD: Folks, this thread isn't about transgender people. It's about a woman that's either conning people or has psychological issues. It's nothing to do with biology, so let's stick to the actual topic and leave out the snide comments.
lol... Gotta love the yanks, bunch of loony fruit cakes with the legal right to carry loaded weapons!
And let's not start with the racism, either.

    check it.

why his it dat some people are pretendin that they black when they isn't, it dont even make you better at basketball or get into the nba or nuffin.

Unless she was somehow extracting money or favours from people by pretending to be black, I don't see how it's a "con". Maybe she self identifys as black because everything inside her tells her she's black. What harm is she doing. Some closed minded hypocrisy going on in here.

I think it's sad black people* are so racist she has to transform herself to be accepted.

*of course not all black people, that would be racist. Just american black people.

A zebra dies and goes to heaven, he gets to ask God one question so he asks "am I white with black stripes or black with white stripes?" and God replies "you are what you are!"

Confused, the zebra asks St.Peter for clarification and he says "clearly you're white with black stripes or he would have said 'you is what you is'..."

No different then the current transgender topic at the moment. If she is doing no harm or its not for financial gain then what's the harm? Maybe she has always felt a strong affinity for the causes of the black people?

Dolezal is the president of the Spokane, Washington, chapter of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). !

I thought 'coloured people' was an offensive term. But there is an organisation with it in their name. I thought correct was 'black' or people of colour'

The name of the organisation predates the societal change to black or "POC".

All I can think is that she must have been really passionate about helping the black community and maybe thought that she'd be scorned because of her race and decided that the best thing she could do was to tell people she was mixed race and then it just got out of hand.

She may have 'issues', I'm not saying she doesn't. You know how it is though; someone asks why you're interested in gardening and you make some flippant off-the-cuff remark about being Monty Don's cousin and the next thing you know you've been made head of the Town Beautification scheme and are praying that no-one thinks to invite 'Cousin Monty' to the groundbreaking ceremony.

I have no idea if this is a reference to something or you've just made it up but I enjoyed it a lot.

I feel quite bad for her. I think a lot of us have told a lie that's escalated more than we envisioned and probably know how it feels to get caught out. These have only been minor things for me so I can only imagine how she felt with such a huge kind of alter ego creation she's made coming crashing down. I found it hard to watch.

Aye, true enough SC, however she's got more issues than Time's back catalogue. Nuttier than squirrel poo. Odd. The media won;t help what recovery she needs mind you.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

So if she self identified as a man its worth celebrating but if you self identify as black you have "issues". Gotta love that AH consistency!

It's because she is a black rights leader. She claimed a history of oppression.

I suppose some of the problems people have isn't about how she identifies herself but how she presents herself. Claiming to have come from a similiar background to those her organisation represents and facing the same issues (such as racial discrimination) because of being a black lady.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,707 ✭✭✭arayess

there seems to be more to the story

she was a black civil rights leader claiming african heritage when her parents claim they of european stock

I guess it's more to do with her position than anything to do with her identity issues.
