It's how they are trained and thought, also they are given military surplus supplies which doesn't help

Lack of/poorly executed(Pun unintended) training with regards to maintaining a calm mode of thinking in a civilian environment.
And of course, the ex-military recruits are to be considered.

Unless you have lived in america and experienced the two tier society there its hard to comprehend.

These were poor black kids who had gone into a white neighbourhood to use the pools there which pissed the locals off.

Guess who the cops are "protecting" there.

America is a segregrated, bigoted racist society where black people are marginalised, segregated and ignored until they get beaten back down by the organs of the state.

The police forces are aggressive, curropt, armed and dealing with poor black kids with nothing to lose who get involved in rampant crime because they cant get a break in their underfunded useless public schools. The police see young black kids as criminals. Its ingrained.

In that environment police bullying some teenagers is a daily occurance.

The Gardai cop flak on many occasions, but they're several levels above the troglodytes that make up many American police forces. The NYPD in my experience are professional and courteous, but police in other states I've been to operate almost like a military occupying force and have an awful rapport with the communities they're policing.

02:28 "get outta here, I already told you ..... leave now ... you are leaving now" towards woman.

02:55 "you know what..." goes to where the woman is standing.

Grabs woman, and tires to put her face down on the ground.

03:11 white male takes cap off, but his body language causes the cop to draw the weapon. Only draws, never takes aim. As far as I can see, he only points the gun towards the ground.

    =-=

I can see him being taken off suspension in a month or so.

I think the problem was they trespassed in a gated community. Not that they were black. But just keep coming to conclusions.

An unstable ex-military - now - police officer of which has a serious mental expression of a control-freak. Stand in that fcuking line son, and don't fcuking move, get down when I say, get the fcuk down now, I have a major malfunction people, and I will shoot you if you fcuking blink at me.

Get the fcuk down on the ground now, now, I mean fcuking now.

I was waiting for Jim Leahey to walk onto the video three-quarters way through, and then randy.

Ex-Military should be excluded/banned from societal police enforcement. They lack professional teachings in regards on how to deal with modern societal issues, and therefore are a danger to all Citizens.

I'm agreeing with Jank.... We're getting a bit obsessed with the police force in the US....

I wonder how many police officers there are in the US and how many individual, peaceful, happy interactions they have daily (I mean there are plenty of videos out there of US police spontaneously stopping to play basketball with kids etc but we're not interested in posting them up are we......)

Why are we here in AH getting our knickers in a twist about them. I doubt I'd be wrong to suggest there are much worse police forces in the world when it comes to corruption and rights abuses.....

Unless you have something to back this statement up it just remains complete and utter BS... You're even managing to insult a regular poster here who is military and is more rational, calm, collected and thoughtful than a number of posters combined....

In fact, if you ask me.... if someone is trained to be calm and collected whilst literally being under fire in a warzone then I imagine this translates quite well to staying calm in stressful situations in the police force... But you do seem to have a chip on your shoulder so I doubt this would make any sense to you....

I've been living over here for 3.5 years. It's been my experience that some less than qualified people with military backgrounds get hired into positions that regular civilians with the same qualifications would not. Companies get tax credits for hiring veterans. They also get the draw of saying we hire veterans (Patriots love that sh1t)

Does this go on in the police forces though? I'm not so sure.

I have a friend serving in the forces. He's looking forward to finishing up. He's sick of his commanders and the way they get treated by superiors. Poor b@stard doesn't realize most companies middle managers are ex military. There's no escaping it.

As for the police. It's not just a white on black thing. Poor white people are discriminated against too.

It's also not all police. I've had to speak to a few police officers. Only once when I was on the wrong end, though. But that one time, I was polite and respectful. He was very friendly to me.

The only time I was physically assaulted by a police officer was in Galway :)

    Two comments come to mind.

That cop was way OTT in cuffing that girl, I'm sure his training could let him cuff her without such brute force, I can see he was frightened by being surrounded and pulled the gun as a gut reaction, it's what they're trained to do, bet his own actions got him there.

The second thing. These snippets if videos being selectively edited and published need to be taken with a pinch of salt. God knows what the lead up to the start of that clip was, god knows what abuse was dished out or laws broken. Not saying the reaction was appropriate to anything, just that these selective videos aren't good to base a big decision on.

Don't see a lot wrong really, yeah one gets a bit heavy handed cuffing a girl but other than that they get called to a disturbance (possibly violent) cops arrive out numbered by gangs of teenagers.
It's all well calling for a nice and soft approach without anyone really knowing the exact details here .
But I'd rather be heavy handed and showing you mean business rather than waiting for the crap to hit the fan and find yourself on the ground getting danced on by 10+ teenagers

    ???????

Yeah teenagers - especially black teenagers - are so freaking dangerous when they're concealing sawn-off shotguns in their bikini bottoms. **** sake. There were at least 3 cops first on scene and they were at that point shown to be the ones acting the most ridiculously. There wasn't a mob when the cop decided to whip his handgun out and scare off a bunch of kids. Add to that, there were a lot of calm, adult neighbors around bearing witness to everything - one is seen advising the tackled girl not to resist even though they both know it was wrong - he knew it was being recorded.
The trouble with people recording with smartphones is you only see one side of the story, having said that though in this case he seemed a bit heavy handed with the kid.
Better than no side at all. The police are as always strongly encouraged to get their officers wearing body cameras for their own protection for this reason. More than a few instances of a police body cam providing the decisive evidence in their favor. Rest assured however, there are also case where cops with cameras have them "unfortunately" switched off for the occasional high-profile-high-controversy bust.
How do you know what the resident is saying is true though?
I dont doubt him. He doesn't try to defend the cop, he's trying to defend the side-text: which is this is some kind of elitist whites only neighborhood and the cops were called in because black kids were out in public being black. Don't doubt there was a huge crowd from the video shown, but it still doesn't justify the cops barrel-rolling, expletive dropping, girl-stomping antics.

Why's the thread titled "Gun Happy American cops"?

The police officer was surrounded whilst making an arrest, he looked like he was about to be assaulted by the two blokes on the right.
And it looked like one of them was reaching into his pocket for something.
So he was justified in drawing his gun IMHO.

The girl that was pushed to the ground was told to leave the area several times from what I can see in the video.
And I'd guess a lot more times than that by other police officers and probably by private security.
From the video it looks like she walking back to the officer and saying something to her when he finally arrested her.

It seems like someone organised a party where they shouldn't, loads of people turned up and then it turned into a disaster.
People are trying to spin it as a "white people/cops oppressing black people".
Here's a video of a fight at the event.

Maybe the US stands out as the biggest and most important democracy in the world, and what happens there - politically, socially, economically - has ramifications for the rest of the world, and that's why we pay so much attention, and get upset when we see things like cops brutalising people.

She's also wearing a bikini. She doesn't have anything to use to harm the officer. She's also smaller than him.

The two young guys sitting on the grass were being respectful.

If it was a situation that there was a huge party, the cop could have waited for backup and they could have had a collective effort to quell it. He was there to get his rocks off.

He also should have not have pulled out his gun. Why not go for a taser or pepper spray. It's because his gun is more threatening and empowering. Cops have a tough job. Particularly here, where there's such a blatant class system and everybody has a gun but I would bet 99.9% of the calls they answer and scenes they go to, do not escalate and\or warrant agression.

This one did not warrant it either.
