Only thing I can think of is, lets say you live away from home and you've given permission for important looking post to be opened...then the opener of said post would know before you.

    Put it this way
Could a guard say the following:

'You're appearing in court on the charge of drunk and disorderly. In the morning. Mayo district court. Your Mammy will be there as she has been trying to get through to you.'

That disheartening moment when you think - hope, someone has broken the rules but realise that you don't know the fxcken rules

If she's referred to as "Mammy", then, yes.

Anybody is allowed to know if someone tells them.
If you don't want your mother to know it's a personal matter.

    Hahahah

    This thread is gold.

No , in fact, if a guard says anything about your mammy, it's your legal right to steal his hat and insult HIS mother twice.

I recommend two yo momma jokes.

AND if the judge mentions your mammy HE is the one who has to go to jail.

It's quite technical but it's true.

Why would your next of kin know before you? Unless they're opening your post without your permission which I'm sure is illegal.

We've established that Mammy already knows. Now, where in Mayo and what time is court? We'll all turn up and give you an alibi :)

    What did you do....exactly?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭Conall Cernach

It depends. Normally there is no need to inform a next of kin at all but if you are a minor then they will. There are also cases like where if you are really drunk or high as a kite they will usually contact a next of kin to tell them you are arrested and up in court the next day etc. Unless a case is to be held in camera then it is not a secret. Sex cases are usually held in camera and the names of those involved are only revealed if the victim (or alleged victim) allows it.
