Looks quite small and compact, not in a good way. Trackpad is very interesting, I'd give one a go in my Dualshock 3 died

I just bought one, mainly because i want to develope a game with it. looks like a nice piece of kit.

Will this be turning into the standard for PC controllers then? Wouldn't mind that tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,816 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

That price is a fair bit of a turn-off for me. I'll stick with the wired X360 controller for a while longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,560 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I may wait and see reviews. But I see they're keeping with the 360 controller buttons ABXY, start, select and colours) so devs won't be changing to match it.

Like others gonna stick with 360 controller for the time being, very interested in the steam link though will wait for reviews of it before picking it up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,694 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

The steam link is up for pre order as well, I ordered both from steam but got stung for €26.98 in deliver charges for the 2, looks like game stop will have it early as well so will cancel and go with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

I'll pick up the link and controller. Will be very handy for the big TV downstairs!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,694 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Anyone know if the steam controller connects to the steam link and not the PC, it say the range of the controller is 5 meters from pc. That's a problem if it connects via the pc and not directly to the link.

I would really hope it can do both, otherwise it's not particularly useful.

Just read up on the steam link thing as well, looks very interesting. I wonder how well everything would knit together...would there be any lag etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,264 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

Will there be customs on these, where are they shipping from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

They're the same price in GameStop as on the Steam store though, so it doesn't really make sense to order (unless you have loads of steam funds, I suppose)

    when is it releasing?

I just dunno what to make of it Im getting it hard enough to transition to keyboard and mouse without throwing this into the mix lol

It's €5 to pre order on GameStop either, or €10 for the both. Pick up in store the 16th. Not on normal release until November.

I pre-ordered off gamestop this morning.

€5 per device to pre-order, with the remaining balanced to be paid in store.

Did you have to do something to that for it to work with your pc?

Just plug it in and it works (Windows might download some drivers). Not sure about the wireless version though.

Ordered the Steam controller too, will be interesting to see how it plays.

Nah, just plug the USB cable into the PC and it should work immediately. Windows Update might have to download a driver first, but that's it.

Looks cool how fast they typed with it!

I wasn't goping to pick them up on steam because it only appeared that i could order one at a time so i'd have to pay 13.30 shipping twice for two controllers.
Gamestop looks good, steam has the advantage that i could sell in game items and pay for a controller but meh after the shipping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,258 ✭✭✭✭DARK-KNIGHT

steam are kinda shooting themselves in foot with the shipping charges i for one wont pay that gamestop it is so

That's only because it's international, the US aren't paying that.

Yeah, I got two on there now whereas I had resigned to not get them. :)
I doubt steam mind that we got them from there, it's mostly going to them anyway heh.

I'm extremely skeptical about this. I imagine it won't be any better than an xbox controller in terms of precision.

Yeah I'd probably get this if I didn't have one. Xbox controller is great for PC. Plug-n-play

Hmmm. If you are playing CoD on PC, you simply cannot compete without a keyboard and mouse.

Well actually I don't play much CoD. If there is a ton of auto-aim in it, maybe you'll be fine.

In games like Quake, Unreal or Counter-Strike keyboard/mouse are simply unparalleled in precision.

if i would be at a disadvantage i couldnt be dealing with that lol maybe a cheap contrtoller and a shiny new mouse then

CoD on PC with a controller would be the most debilitating and soul destroying evening of your life. The most average of player on a mouse and keyboard will destroy a top tier player with a controller - especially in AW cause of the increased reliance on moving quickly and unexpectedly. You've got CS:GO and Ark in your "most recent played" list there in your sig - if you're not using a mouse and keyboard for these games, how on earth are you playing them?

You've got a proper gaming platform now, don't waste your time by not using a proper gaming input device. :D

I'll be interested to see how this controller stacks up against the XB1 controller. The reviews would have to be incredible for me to buy one of these and not use my XB1 controller.

If this matches the 360 controller it will be a miracle but it wont happen, anyone who owned an xperia Play will know how bad touchpads are, no matter how precise it just feels all wrong, you need the stick under your thumb not smooth plastic.

Meh. You sound set in your ways rather than being concerned with which offers more precision.

I'm interested in the haptic feedback you get from the touch pads. If done right then I could see how the pads could be made to feel almost stick-like if a game needed that.

To be fair, i bet this will be 10 times better than the xperia play!

Just because both use touchpad technology doesnt mean the quality and precision wont be any different!

Even touchpads in laptops differ in terms of performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,578 ✭✭✭✭Turtwig

I'd expect this to match 360 controller, if not better it. It might take a little adjusting to. I'd be surprised though if it could match a gaming mouse. Who knows though? The concept should provide precision. Whether that translates into realty is another question. It definitely deserves a shot. A potential renovation in stale game controllers design is always to be welcomed.

So I won't be getting it for quite some time then. :o

I know but there are some things that are just fundamentally flawed with no way of saving them no matter how you innovate, touchpads/touchscreens for gaming are a perfect example. Steering a vehicle or controlling a character with a touchpad compared to an analogue stick?

I think they trying to balance gameplay with typing ability and its the gameplay side thats going to suffer for it. just my opinion on a device Ive never used.

So it looks like early pre-orders off steam have tracking numbers now.

I pre-ordered off gamestop, havent heard anything from them, but the original email when I pre-ordered said the 16th of October

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,694 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Said on the GameStop email I can pick them up from the 16th which is Friday week. Must check with them when there landing and will they sell them once they arrive.

Cant wait to see the proper reviews, went without a controller for 6 months waiting for this...

I'll buzz around image boards for people's experience with this controller. Man I hope it's good. I won't be reading any 'proper' reviews. But one of the tech channels I'm subscribed to will probably do a video on it. A few lines and paragraphs of the pros/cons from multiple users gives me a much better understanding of a product than an word-count-quota article by what's left of video game journalists. I struggle to think of anyone that would even be able to understand what they're talking about when it comes to gamepads. Enthusiasts for that kind of stuff tend to actually play games with precision controls (FPS, Fighting Games, Dogfighting etc)and talk about them on forums/image boards... not write reviews for ad revenue.
