Best frontman in music?

Came across this article from the NME recently, it's a few years old. Anyway, they picked their top 50 following a poll. Ironically, they excluded Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode from their choice of 50, even though he was voted no. 3 by their readers. Surprised to see Freddie Mercury as low as 6th, as would have though he's be many people's first choice.

So who would yours be? Have to go for Gahan myself, to see him whip the crowd up into the arm swinging in Never Let Me Down is almost like a preacher controlling a congregation...

For me it has to be Jarvis Cocker. After seeing Pulp for the first time in the Point back in 96 they went from being a band I liked to my favourite band ever based on his control of the crowd, witty insights between songs, eclectic dance moves and general energy. Must have seen them at least 10 times since and he has yet to disappoint

Would always be my first choice anyway, even when I read the thread title I thought "No question - Freddy Mercury", followed in second by Jim Morrisson and Marc Bolan.

    4. Mick Jagger
    5. Glenn Tilbrook (Squeeze)

Freddie Mercury, he had the complete package from voice to showmanship.

Micheal Hutchence, Layne Stanley, Eddie Vedder are a few more.

In fact any such survey would have to be called "Who is the best frontman after Freddie Mercury", because that isn't even up for debate.
It's the same with Bond, "Who is the best Bond after Connery", because to suggest anything else is just silly, really.

    1: Freddie (naturellement)
    2: Planty
    3: Daltrey
    4: Gillan
    5: Bruce Dickinson

I **** you not...André Rieu. Going by the numbers he is head and shoulders above most bands currently playing on tours.

Real answer is of course James Brown.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

    Bruce Springsteen.
With the possible exception of Freddie he is quite simply head and shoulders above anything else the world of music has produced. Freddie while an amazing musician, singer and songwriter was also very theatrical and flamboyant, bruce is just good old fashioned rock and roll brought to life, so for that reason he clinches it for me.
Jagger was good, but hasn't produced a good song in 20 years so he's getting docked for trading on past glories.
Stephen Tyler was great - but he's getting docked for sucking satan cowels cock:mad:

Have seen U2 and wasn't that impressed. He's a good vocalist alright, but his moves are pretty lame, it's almost as if he lacks rhythm, and that whole McPhisto thing was toe curling. Crowd did lap it up though.

Grohl definitely deserves a mention. Coolest guy in rock.
Always has a great rappore with the crowd and every man there and possibly quite a few women would love to be him.

Bono always looks a bit awkward. I certainly wouldn't class him up there with the likes of Roger Daltry, Freddie or Mick Jagger.

Jim Morrison for me. He had it all, set the standard.

Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. What an amazing band of musicians with an amazing man at the front. He's great because he is completely lacking in ego

Everyone knows Freddie is the top spot so I'm not even going to contest that but I'd also think Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke deserves a mention.

Everytime I see him perform I feel like I'm descending into some kind medieval insanity.

Shane MacGowan on a good night. However, on a bad night he could be mediocre.

Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age gets my vote. The voice, guitar and cigarette. He epitomises rock music.

    Black Francis at two.

And like it or not, Liam Gallagher gets third spot for me.

*Freddie Mercury had great presence but he wasn't "rock n' roll" so I can't consider him.

    Allison Moyet

    ???

Must admit I haven't seen her, but can remember her on TOTP back in the 80s and thought she just clicked her fingers! Great voice mind you.

Another one that impressed me was Karl Hyde of Underworld. Considering he has had so many dance anthems he is a terrible dancer himself...but makes up for it with energy.

would have to agree with the majority here and say Freddy Mercury and Mick Jagger.

Freddy Mercury had this kind of masculinity and confidence mixed with femininity and vulnerability that I haven't ever seen in anyone else and Mick Jagger was just so cocky and confident with his stage presence and attitude that you have to respect him for it.

I was at a Fleetwood mac gig and I have to say that when you see Lindsay Buckingham live, you just cant take your eyes off him on stage but its mainly down this his guitar playing ability and how comfortable he is with the guitar and for the girls I would say Stevie Nicks had a very mystical and mysterious kind of stage presence.
