8th of June, 40days since spreading 80units/ac. Was originally going to leave it bulk up but now being won over by quality vs. quantity debate;)

Have 40 acres ready for Friday or Saturday. 31acres is good quality and hasn't started to seed yet. Won't be very heavy but quality is good. I'm thinking of leaving the other 9 acres bulk up as it has already seeded, and cut it in 10 or 12 days time.

All you will do in that case is delay the return of the 9 acres by a fortnight or more. You will lose 12 days by waiting and prob another week as there will be no green whatever in stubble.

I would knock it all. If you don't keep us posted as to which one returns quickest

You make all bales Just do it...right? And you possibly pay per bale to mow/bale/wrap? ............ then I am coming around to the idea that it is a no brainer! Cut cut CUT!

NOW is the time when your farm should be producing the most grass. NOW is the time when you will get the best quality. NOW is the time that you need to keep grazing grass in check and ate down well as it starts to head out, especially so if you have land that you cannot get a topper into.

As delaval (I think) has said in one of his posts, you have green in your stubble when you cut early so regrowth should be quicker. You also have aftergrass sooner when you cut at a time when grass is growing over the hedges.

You might think I am lecturing you, but I'm really lecturing myself !! :o It seems so obvious now, that I can't see why I didn't think of it (or DO it) before!! First time for me (and I'd say this farm) cutting silage in May!!

If this goes curly De our word isn't going to be worth s**t around here, or in my case probably less than s**t:p

    hi lads,

do ye ever top dress your silage ground?
we have 3 bags of 18-6-12 out for 5 weeks, but its very slow, would another bag do any good?
does the 2 units of N per day rule still stand?

Time to cut. Your N is well gone at this stage. No gain in leaving it in the field at this stage but plenty to lose.

Cutting today. Hoping to bale tomorrow evening. Not much of a chance for wilt.

?? Is 24hours in this weather not enough?? Is there two swarths thrown into one?

Yes, I suppose my head is still stuck in last winter. Should I urn it first? Or simply bale it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,173 ✭✭✭✭Muckit

I think don't bother especially if your only way of turning and rowing is a haybob! The top should get a nice bleaching in this weather and sometimes I wonder is all this scattering and tedding justified to save a bale or so if you are only making a few acres. If contractor is happy to drive around with baler let him bang away!

Is it Mulhern's that you get? They make my pit silage

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,063 ✭✭✭restive

Not Mulhern's, I use a local lad on the river Shiven.

Sure do but I'm fair skinned and a red head and I'd burn in a moderate day in march,no fear of that this year though,!!

Jesus Delaval, I am surprised at ya. Cabs are an unnecessary expense. Whats wrong with a hardy set of oil skins tied up with auld baler twine. The youth of today are gone soft I tell ya. Ye with yer milking parlours and such. ... next thing ye'll be wanting a pump in the well.... whats wrong with buckets!

I walked the silage fields this evening, looking good, seeding out definitely but should be knocked on Tuesday at the latest. One reseeded field is really rocketing up, it was a slightly more expensive grass seed mix, the ryegrass in it is well up over my knees. I reseeded that field last Sept/Oct, very slow start with the cold spring but more than making up for it now. I think I'll try the same again in another 14acre silage feild this yr.

I'm jealous looking at this thread just a couple of acres stopped here in the last days might have something to cut in July sometime.
Next winter is looking pretty lean already:eek:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,716 ✭✭✭1chippy

cutting next week hopefully and even got another 7 acre field stopped off id say the contractor will be laughing at us if we dont let it bulk up a bit more for the pit.

I see in the Journal this week, that Teagasc are predicting a national fodder shortage for next winter of up to 30%.

So it's fair dues to the lads that are pushing hard and cutting earlier this year, despite the slow growth year to date.
