If I recall the last thing you said the me before it broke up, before it took you from me.
You said 'I love you more than the stars in the sky but your name just escapes me tonight.'

Used to think the lyric was 'before he took you from me' and it was just another lost love song but read something recently where the writer explained that it was 'it' and the song was about his grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's. Such a small but significant change that adds a lot to the song.

On Grafton Street in November, we
    Tripped lightly along the ledge
Of a deep ravine where can be seen
    The worth of passion play.
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts
    And I not making hay;
Oh, I loved too much and by such and such
    Is happiness thrown away.

If there is a lyric/stanza to better describe unrequited love I have never heard it.

And in this one I think Bono describes a conflicted father son relationship absolutely perfectly....

    We fight all the time
    You and I...that's alright
    We're the same soul
    I don't need...I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more

    Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

I know that we don't talk
    I'm sick of it all
    Can - you - hear - me - when - I -
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me...

    Where are we now?
I've still got to let you know
    A house still doesn't make a home
    Don't leave me here alone...

"When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a javelin,
...when I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery"

    Funny.

    But the winner is :

    "Contessa, perdono. Perdono, perdono.
Piu docile io sono, e dico di si."

There is simply no finer moment in the whole of lyric music.
None more searing, more real, or more succinctly accurate, capturing in a few words, the essence of human existence that moves you to your core.

    God only knows
    God makes his plan
    The information's unavailable
    To the mortal man.
    We work our jobs
    Collect our pay
Believe we're gliding down the highway
When in fact we're slip slidin' away.

    Forever after us
    Carrying an equation
    It's like I'm Asian
    You heard fantastic
    We cross the Atlantic
    They say I'm not normal
I'm the kid with the formula
It must be my mind reign
    I'll make your back break
    And your knees bend
    Your sucking me friend
    What do we do?
    We do the voodoo
    I send the energy
    To a enemy
    And ****ing Ronald Reagan
    It's 'cause I'm pagan
    Is that you, boy?
    I see your decoy
    Enter the arena
    I'm full of schizophrenia
I lop 'em in a minute
    And do the schizofrantic
    Stop them poses
'Cause this is what a flow is
    Stop them poses
'Cause this is what a flow is
    I'm bombing bastards

    Sunday morning
    Praise the dawning
    It's just a restless feeling
    By my side

    Early dawning
    Sunday morning
    It's just the wasted years
    So close behind

I was flat on my back with my feet in the thorns
I was in between the apples and the chloroform
She came to me often, I was sure I was dying
It was always hard to tell if she was laughing or crying

I thought I heard somebody calling
In the dark I thought I heard somebody call

Joan never cared about the in-betweens
Combed her hair with a blade did the Maid of Orleans
Said Christ walked on water we can wade through the war
You don't need to tell me who the fire is for

Oh bring me the love that can sweeten a sword
A boat that can love the rocks or the shore
The love of the iceberg reaching out for a wreck
Can you love me like the crosses love the nape of the neck?

Sometimes I wake up in the morning
The ginger lady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I hear you talking in my head
I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the first time
I never think about the last

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
Your the measure of my dreams
    The measure of my dreams.

This is from A Rainy Night In Soho.

Smoking this, drinking that, hitting at hoes

''why you comin' home, five in the morn'
somethin's goin' on, can I smell yo dick?''

just for pure inventiveness of detecting infidelity by smelling your partners penis, it gets my vote.

I'm trying to tell you something about my life
Maybe give me insight between black and white
The best thing you've ever done for me
Is to help me take my life less seriously, it's only life after all
Well darkness has a hunger that's insatiable
And lightness has a call that's hard to hear
I wrapped my fear around me like a blanket
I sailed my ship of safety till I sank it, I'm crawling on your shore.

I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains
I looked to the children, I drank from the fountain
There's more than one answer to these questions
    Pointing me in crooked line
The less I seek my source for some definitive
The closer I am to fine.

To me this is absolute perfection from The Magnetic Fields:

A pretty girl is like a minstrel show
It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, you go
It just isn't the same on radio
It's all about the makeup and the dancing and the oh!

A pretty girl is like a violent crime
If you do it wrong you could do time
But if you do it right it is sublime

I'm so in love with you girl
It's like I'm on the moon
I can't really breathe but I feel lighter

A melody is like a pretty girl
Who cares if it's the dumbest in the world
It's all about the way that it unfurls

    A pretty girl is like . . . a pretty girl

Massive Attack - Safe From Harm

I was looking at you to see you looking back at me looking back at you.

Why? Its a very cool line and I can remember doing similar in early dates years ago. Looking back at her hoping to see her looking back at you. Looking back at her because you wanted to, and looking back at her knowing she would be looking back at you looking at her.

Also, its a bit of a mindfúck of a line.

    Techno, techno, techno, techno!

I would explain the reason I love this lyric but it's quite technical.

Few different ones. Couple of verses which have really resonated with me during a protracted period of social drama and exile:

Did you come here for forgiveness?
Or did you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head?
Did I ask too much? More than a lot?
You gave me nothing, now it's all I've got.
We're one, but we're not the same
No we just hurt eachother, then we do it again.

    One - U2.

Also, the following from Losing Touch by The Killers:

I ain't in no hurry, you go run and tell your friends I'm losing touch
Fill the night with stories, the legend grows…
Of how you got lost, but you made your way back home
You sold your soul, like a roaming vagabond…
Heard about how you got lost, but you made your way back home
You sold your soul, an allegiance dead and gone…
    I'm losing touch.

Et finalment (one of the best lyrics ever in my view):

Sucker love, a box I choose
No other box I choose to use.
    Another love I, would abuse
    No circumstances could excuse.
In the shape of things to come -
    Too much poison, come undone.
'Cause there's nothing else to do -
    Every me and every you.

Like the naked leads the blind,
    I know I'm selfish, I'm unkind.
    Sucker love I always find,
Someone to bruise and leave behind.
All alone in space and time,
    There's nothing here but what's here's mine.
    Something borrowed, something blue -
    Every me and every you.

Placebo - Every Me Every You

Love the way this and One by U2 initially sound to the casual listener like love songs, and then you actually pay attention to the lyrics and they're both about extremely nasty, bitter relationships.
