    Mine is;

"Like all good fruits the balance of life is in the ripe and ruin"

(Alt-J - Ripe and Ruin- An Awesome Wave)

To me, it means that the best times of your life are in between life and death.

But of course, lyrics are subjective, so I'm curious about what other boardsies get out of their favourite lyrics lyrics.

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
    Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
    Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
    Ermine furs adorn the imperious
    Severin, Severin awaits you there
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
    Different colors made of tears
Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
    Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
    Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now plead for me
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
    Different colors made of tears
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
    Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

    Nice

I have a few but Peter Gabriel's 'Mercy St.' came to mind first. Slightly dark but always stuck out in my head over the years...

Looking down on empty streets, all she can see
Are the dreams all made solid
Are the dreams all made real

All of the buildings, all of those cars
    Were once just a dream
    In somebody's head

She pictures the broken glass, she pictures the steam
    She pictures a soul
With no leak at the seam

    Let's take the boat out
    Wait until darkness
    Let's take the boat out
    Wait until darkness comes

Nowhere in the corridors of pale green and grey
    Nowhere in the suburbs
In the cold light of day
There in the midst of it so alive and alone
    Words support like bone

    Dreaming of Mercy Street
    Wear your inside out
    Looking for mercy
    In your daddy's arms again
    Dreaming of Mercy Street
    'Swear they moved that sign
    Looking for mercy
    In your daddy's arms

Pulling out the papers from drawers that slide smooth
Tugging at the darkness, word upon word
Confessing all the secret things in the warm velvet box
To the priest, he's the doctor
    He can handle the shocks

Dreaming of the tenderness, the tremble in the hips
    Of kissing Mary's lips

    Dreaming of Mercy Street
    Wear your inside out
    Dreaming of mercy
    In your daddy's arms again
    Dreaming of Mercy Street
    'Swear they moved that sign
    Looking for mercy
    In your daddy's arms

    Looking for mercy
    Looking for mercy
    Looking for mercy
    Mercy, mercy

Anne, with her father is out in the boat
    Riding the water
Riding the waves on the sea

The bit highlighted in bold always gets me and of course it all makes more sense with the music to aid the lyrics. "Wear your inside out" is pretty memorable to me also

Gabriel was inspired by the works and poems of Anne Sexton for this.

If you have a few mins and don't know it it's hard not to get sucked in by it

Fever Ray also covered it a few years ago. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmf0_zRdiq4

The Strokes, The Ize of The World

I think I know what you mean but watch what you say
'Cause they'll be trying to knock you down in some way
Sometimes it feels like the world is falling asleep
How do you wake someone up from inside a dream?

Your mind would wander and search for its place in the night
Your body followed this feeling like following light
Once that your music was born it followed you 'round
And then it gave your activities meaning and let you be loud

You're sad but you smile, it's not in your eyes
Your eyeballs don't change, it's the muscles around your eyes

An egg to fertilize, a pulse to stabilize
A body to deodorize, a life to scrutinize
A child to criticize, young adults to modernize
Citizens to terrorize, generations to desensitize

Your dreams are sweet and obsessed and you're overworked
You're over taken by visions of being overlooked
    How disappointed would D.I.D.I.P.P. be
To see such our power in our hands all wasted on greed?
Am I a prisoner to instincts or do my thoughts just live as free
And detached as boats to the dock?

Just like the music was born and detached from your heart
Is your free time to free minds or for falling apart?
Night after night you turn off the light
You don't fall asleep, right away, are we, are we done?

A desk to organize, a product to advertise
A market to monopolize, movie stars you idolize
Leaders to scandalize, enemies to neutralize
No time to apologize, fury to tranquilize
Weapons to synchronize, cities to vapor-i...

And I am nothing of a builder
But here I dreamt I was an architect
    And I built this balustrade
To keep you home, to keep you safe
    From the outside world
But the angles and the corners
Even though my work is unparalleled
    They never seemed to meet
This structure fell about our feet
And we were free to go

Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect by The Decemberists

    Dusty In Here

    The Go-Betweens

    like a ghost
    a ghost of something old
it's cold and dusty in here
    just twenty years
and six feet down I'm told
    I know your face
    I share your name
    in the dark
    when shadows have their way
    a finger's a chimney
    and the moon's on fire
    then sleep arrives
he's got his bags and wares
    the dragon sleeps
    and St. George stares
you won't write, no you won't write
that's all I ask, that you just write
and you say no, that you can't speak
you've lost your voice, you let it go
    you let it go
    like a ghost
    a ghost of something old
it's cold and dusty in here
    it's in your hand
it sits just like a glove
the finger traces the lines of love
it's cold and dusty in here
    someone you knew
    is watching you
    I'm someone you knew.

    Taylor Swift: Better than revenge.

It is about a real woman (with a reputation) who stole her man.

She's not a saint and she's not what you think
    She's an actress, whoa
She's better known for the things that she does
    On the mattress, whoa
    Soon she's gonna find
Stealing other people's toys on the playground
    Won't make you many friends
    She should keep in mind,

    The piano has been drinking
    My necktie is asleep
And the combo went back to New York
The jukebox has to take a leak

And the carpet needs a haircut
And the spotlight looks like a prison break
'Cause the telephone's out of cigarettes
And the balcony's on the make

And the piano has been drinking
    The piano has been drinking

And the menus are all freezing
And the light man's blind in one eye
And he can't see out of the other
And the piano-tuner's got a hearing aid
And he showed up with his mother

And the piano has been drinking
    The piano has been drinking

'Cause the bouncer is a sumo wrestler
    Cream puff Casper milk toast
And the owner is a mental midget
With the I.Q. of a fencepost

'Cause the piano has been drinking
    The piano has been drinking

And you can't find your waitress
    With a geiger counter
And she hates you and your friends
And you just can't get served without her

    And the box-office is drooling
And the bar stools are on fire
    And the newspapers were fooling
    And the ash-trays have retired

'Cause the piano has been drinking

Sunday Morning Coming Down by Kris Kristofferson

Well, I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

Just what a pure mess the guys life is and how lonely he is is highlighted by the quiet nature of a Sunday morning.

I know it's supposed to just be a line or two - but

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Winter, Tori Amos - from the same album and one of my all time favourite songs.

Always reminds me to cherish the times when your kids actually want you around all the time - I have 2 adult(ish) kids and 2 babies, the transition from baby to adult is literally the blink of an eye. Sometimes when they're young and dragging you around you think "jesus, I wish they'd give me a break" But then they get a bit older and give you that break - you'd be amazed at how much you miss being dragged around!

You say you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down
It's only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound
    Of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat .. drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
    And what you lost ...
