Sky would have very big reach across all their channels but both Sky News and Challenge alone would have smaller reaches. I think it depends on how an advertiser wants to sell the ads.

I think what is more interest is their growth since arriving on Saorview, Challenge is now number 6 channel in the country. Imagine if DTT had been take seriously, perhaps we'd have more local competition. But its too late now.

Though I think Sky sell most of the advertising in the market outside of RTÉ, TV3 and TG4.

Stand alone Saorview figures would be interesting, either Challenge is pulling high numbers or the ratings are weighted towards Saorview, the jump in viewership does not make sense otherwise imho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,176 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Yes in many ways that seems to be the case.

VM2, VM3 both get between 2.5% and 3.5%, but if it is the case that it is heavily weighted towards Saorview how is it that RTÉ2 is doing so poorly in comparison?

Challenge would have been one of Sky more popular channels getting 0.8% versus a 0.1% share and below for both Sky Mix (pick) and Sky Arts their 2 other FTA channels. Sky News had begun to see a drop in audience before its move on to Soarview, going from a normal 1.5% to 0.8% and now back toward 1.5%.

Also both VMTV1 +1 and RTÉ2 +1 get about 0.3% share, VMTV 1 +1 is not available on Saorview while RTÉ2 is not available on Virgin Media. It'd be interesting to see TG4 +1 (only available on Soarview AFAIK) figures and if RTÉ2 +1 would see an increase if it went 24hr.

But if you are wondering what the top 5 shows across the sky channels were for the month: -

    1. Live play of Liverpool v Chelsea
    2. Live play of Brighton V Totenham
    3. Who wants to be a millionaire celebrity
    4. Live play of Arsenal V Liverpool
    5. Live play of Aston Villa V Man U

Sky sports' channels get between 0.04% (Sky Sports Football & Tennis) up to 1.02% for Sky Sports News, Sky Sports Main Event had 0.87%

The, shall we say alternative methods of viewing live sport, have to be hitting Sky Sports?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,176 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Even when we didn't have alternative methods Sky Sports was around that kind of audience level, I am not sure if TAM Ireland include watching those sports via the Sky App which I assume is not much different to watching it via the broadcast channel on Pay TV. I don't know I don't watch sport. You also have to remember that people in the Pub watching are not included in the ratings either.

What is more interesting is that only one Challenge programme got into their top 5 programmes in October, but 4 are from Sky Sports channels.

I think TV ratings have been exposed as hokum, 400k homes were without power on Toy show night due to storm Darragh but apparently the toy show had "record high ratings"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,176 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Yeah I have always thought this, this isn't the first time that high ratings have happened when homes are without electricity.

So the top 50 shows have been released

    Untitled Image

Almost 50% are on RTÉ2, you would think that RTÉ2 was doing well, but notice that only 18 are none sporting events. Only one non-sporting event from VMTV ONE appears on the list and that is I'm A Celeb, while Fair City appears for soap and drama with 454,500 viewers (not sure what day that happened on), with the only other scripted show being The Young Offenders.

Just to note that I forgot RTÉ had added the latest series of the Young Offenders to the player just before Christmas so this would bring the average down to 60,870, putting it in 8th position.

Also it back of the envelop stuff.

generally medialive will post results on Tuesday and while it is only late Wednesday morning it would have been interesting to see how the weekending 26 did, considering the weekend outages. My conspiracy theory in me suggests they are trying to cook the books, or we won't see those figures and it being a bank holiday weekend we can wait until this time next for this weeks figures.
