Hmm. I might consider it for a longer journey, like for the now-defunct a American Orient Express. Luxury train travel is a fantastic way to see the scenery, much better than a bus, and the service and comfort is similar to that of a luxury hotel. That said, Ireland's longest run is, what, four hours? Hardly enough time to enjoy the meal, let alone make use of the sleeper car.

    Nice idea, wrong country.

The price is in tune with the rest of the Belmont Trips for that length of time, just where would it go? unlike Europe we dont have great landscape via the train, they dont go through the mountainside or am I wrong?

Day 1 - Overnight in Charleville. WTF???
    Day 2 - Limerick Junction
    Day 3 - Athlone

Its a very expensive Bus tour

Done by the actual Orient Express company. Not a knockoff

The train only carries 40 people according to the website so that's where your money is going. Trains aint cheap things to run so typically you want to cram as many people in as possible. Having small numbers means high price.

It's a luxury tour. How much would an American spend on renting a car, booking hotel rooms during peak season, buying dinners, booking tours? It probably wouldn't be too far off and no guarantee of quality.

I think it will appeal to some people, it's a nice option to have.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,611 ✭✭✭Valetta

If they get the customers, then I say fair play.

Even if I had the money, I don't think I'd have the balls to try it.

Hopefully if they travel past Broombridge the scallies won't peg rocks at them like they do the Maynooth train

Where are they going cork Dublin Tralee Galway every other rail line is redundant with years.

Seems like a pricy enough trip.

Go into destinations - the picture for Westport is from Dublin and the Molly Malone

Seems a very expensive and rushed trip.

Operated by Belmond who operate similar services in UK and Europe and operate the Orient Express route in Europe. So, they have massive experience.

The train is the mode of transport from point to point and the "hotel room" and the dining room. Local coaches take passengers to local areas of interest.
    This post has been deleted.

You can use Irish rail and stay in hostels and go the same route as this for less than €300

Somehow I doubt if your USA trip is 7 weeks in 5 star luxury with everything included! :)

For doubters - think of the luxury hotel market in Ireland. Plenty of people paying €1000 a night in some hotels. The market is there - its just not gonna be you or me.

Looks way too sterile with little charm and the dining car is awful, looks like something out of a cliched Irish wedding. If they are going to charge that much then I would be expecting something a bit more authentic. The chances are high that you are going to be looking out at a miserable grey day, they didn't have to make you look at it while inside as well.

But kudos on launching it. I like these sort of trips.

Bed and board included. Hardly that expensive. Also they "stable" in Charleville. They aren't really visiting it.

Shame the east coast line is left out,it's a very scenic route but the Rosslare/Waterford line was closed.

Decent bedrooms but those couches look similar to those ones my parents had in the early 90's.

Almost 15 grand for a couple to spend a week on a train in Ireland. Tbh, the train does look very bland, in terms of decor. For 15 grand I'd expect not to have to sit at a table with 2 or more strangers. It's nothing compared to the Orient Express.

    ****Train breaks down at Broombridge****

[tannoy] this is your driver speaking, please don't venture outside, of the undead may kill you. If any of them try to get aboard, please feel free to use lethal force... :pac:

    =-=

Hope the "the many large windows" in the "Observation Car" are bullet proof, in case the usual toerags attempt to pelt the train with stones.

Misses the whole North West, the only part of Ireland with seeing.

Same company. The cabins and observation deck look good.

In terms of prices a 2 day one night trip London Venice is 2.8k euro.

This will sell well I think. Sounds kind of magical even if we know its really not. A lot of very wealthy tourists will be interested in this.

It is described a lot better than it most likely is. 7,700 would get you a personal escorted tour around Ireland in a luxury car with 5 star hotels included and 3 course meals in Ireland's top restaurants.

Cruises are a fraction of the price. Get to see multiple countries too.

They can also tell the passengers that Donegal is a quarantine zone which they must never enter.

that may not be a problem though. as operators can come into our network now bellmont may be able to force irish rail to allow them access to the rosslare waterford line. of course what condition the line is in god only knows
