Were are the northern buyers from.do u mean northern ireland i thought there was some kind of tarrif or export duty on cattle going into northern ireland

Dont actually know, just know they were there and saw 4 NI registered artics loading all sorts of cattle. All I know is they are buying & I was selling. Cannot remember ever getting 2.50kg for stores in local mart, Which was also on today & ud be grateful for 2.20 kg for chx!!

I think it's the same story every year with people saying that nobody will finish cattle out of sheds this winter. There is always a steady supply out of sheds every year imo

The thinking is that there will be a glut of cattle from now to end of January. Processors expect this as they expect that lads will finish cattle fast and take the hit on ration prices as silage is not plentiful. However from January on is there problem with limited silage and scarcity of straw finishers may not fill sheds later in the year or after offloading before and after Christmas. Lower cattle prices may entice lads but if prices continue to be poor from now to after Christmas lads may not continue to fill shed if store prices are strong

The other issue is cattle for grass next summer. While there may be a glut of cattle from July on numbers could be tightish to then. Buyers like me will not be picking up as many. I have only 50% of my usual silage. There fore I will not have any pen of finishing cattle. Over the last 3 years I have gone from 3 pens to 2 pens to a single pen last year and none this year. And I can say I do not miss the ration bill even though I have one already this year but it is cleared. As well I will not buy any weanlings I have had 15-25 over the last 5 years. My shed can hold the bone's of 100 cattle it will only be half full this year.

I have discussed it with the accountant and my stock values are ok to do this. Even if they were not tax would be a more favourable option rather than the workload of sourcing silage and paying through the nose for nuts.

I’m cutting back on next years grass cattle. I might buy a few in the spring to bring same number to my usual system. I will be winter finishing a few more and forward buying the meal. It’s the best punt I have with only half the silage... at least I’ll have the slurry to throw the dice again rather than selling and letting the nutrients out the gate. Have ordered some peat today.

Just going to hang tough. I doubt I’ll sell any weanlings but I’ll be hanging a fair few cows. I hit my winter needs today with silage and should be able to take a few surplus too. Never thought I’d do that a month ago. I intend to feed on as normal. Prices will be bad but not near as bad as all’s being hyped up to. We’re great at talking ourselves into trouble.

What way does forward buying the ration work? What sort of meal etc.. Is it off a mill or farmer? Feeding a high maize coarse ration here to bulls for a little over 260 a tonne.

Buy from mill, agree price and pay upfront on the day and have drew by agreed date. Brings next springs meal into this tax year.

Are you keeping less cows anymore or will you restock

Cutting back cow numbers and going finishing all I have. Currently overstocked but will slowly trim back. Too much time and not enough money in suckling

Disappointed with bullock but I did have him helping to pick up ai in spring. Cows were straight off calves. Was not in myself but himself said all back at least 100 to 150 and plain cattle are worst hit.

Is Gortatlea Mart in Castleisland, or does Castleisland have it's own mart?

Gortalea is a different mart to Castleisland. Castleisland is the biggest mart in Kerry. Kerry I say has more Mart's than any county. As well as the two above there is Listowel, Dingle, Milltown, Tralee, Kenmare and Cahirciveen.

Why is that? I hope it's not generous credit terms to some individuals.

I met him on a monday, he seems to be a grafter who travels all west cork out to the mizen. Cows yest were over 4 hours selling, then bulls, hefirs and then bullocks. Only fear is he gets too big....hopefully he has tightly controlled credit.

He was on about moving the cows to a different day but afraid he'd loose the buzz from the sale
