Saw a Jan 2023 all black BB bull , 590kg make 1770 in Gort tonight. I didn't watch many, but that one stood out. Would those kind of weights for age, not trigger an inspection?

It would make u wonder, if he did 2kg a day thats 480 kg which would mean he weighted 110kg at birth.

I've seen worse, i was selling cattle last May and i was waiting in the box for my ones to come through, anyway the buck before me had about 20 bullocks to sell, oddly enough they were all born the same day, according to the cards they were 4 months old weighing on average 350kg-400kg and not a single nut did they see in their lives, they were shook looking. they were easily year olds.

One you'd give the benefit of the doubt but 20 was taking the piss.

Anyway that BB, was he out of a suckler or dairy?

  • Registered Users Posts: 870 ✭✭✭grange mac

Two completely different type of buyer in skibbereen today.

Weanling bull chx 400kg making 1530 tops.... Chx bullocks 400kg making 1150....Chx bullock 500 kg 1450 tops....

    Clearly doesn't pay to squeeze....

No it doesn’t unless at grass time or keeping yourself. More options for full bulls

I was watching gortatlea mart around 4 am this morning and it still flying it unbelievable stuff altogether

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,380 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

There was some problem with the scales there after 1am. They power washed it out, they washed underneath it and we're digging what looked like dry dung out from the corners of it.

About 1.30 they threw a cloth over the camera and I went away to bed. But it must have stopped the mart for well over half an hour. Isee a good few lots of the heavy stuff went in twice

It must be the most retarded mart in Ireland ,cattle standing waiting to be sold for up to 20 hours and the sellers thinking their great men getting 40 euro more then their local mart when in fact their cattle would have lost double that in weight loss!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,380 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Before the scales was cleaned, it was on fire, I say the cattle were weighting very light. Everything was nearly 3/kg

The bullocks are hardly standing around from early morning? It would take a colossal yard to hold 500 odd cows and the same of dry cattle at the one time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,380 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

There was probably nearly 2k cattle there yesterday. I say nearly 600 cows, there was 197 lots of heifers done with lot A as well. 50 bulls and 250+ lots of bullocks.

The cattle come from all.over Cork, Kerry and Limerick as well as elsewhere. If a truck is being a few cows from west Cork he is bringing everything else as well.

Ya lots if cattle dropped in later but 90% of cattle would e there at 3pm

Surely something like this extremely detrimental to the marts reputation.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,380 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

How many sellers saw it or even realised what was happening. All lads see is the 3/kg. The only way it came to a head I imagine was some lad had his cattle weighted at home and knew the difference in weight was too much.

In 3-4 years time I imagine that only Gortnalea and Castleisland will be open in Kerry as cattle mart's. I can see him going into sheep as well in a year or two. It is getting close to where he will have to have a separate day for the cows. There is weeks and he is running 3 sales a week where there is a special dairy or suckler cow sale on the Thursday.

I was only ever in it once of a Wednesday evening during the summer so I don't know what's what about it. I know well what you mean if there's a handful of bullocks to be lifted enroute then they'll all be on the one lorry. There's probably a lot to be said for splitting it across 2 sales on days like yesterday.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,380 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Mind you a lot of lads selling do not have a clue. The amount of lads that send in stock in singles or two that could be all bunched together. I not sure where I saw it this week store FR bulls 18 months old not 20 kgs between them send in as a double and two singles. Lads around the ring find it easy to share cattle like that between them.

It's the same with plainer weanlings going in singles. IMO of you have plain cattle you are better of bunching them

I would have to agree with the weight loss point but people here in West cork ain't fools either. He gives a minimum price in the yard and you get more if it's above that. I know neighbors with out of spec bullocks going up there. Seem to be great buyers.

If you were around here and the fooling that was going on with the auctioneer in skibbereen mart you would be saying novenas every that Monti will keep thriving. For places with no competition like down here, gortatlea really woke things up

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,741 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

That's what I don't get - Why is Gortatlea so successful. Your post seems to answer that. Was there that much messing going on in the other marts?

Definitely a lot of them middle of the road dairy bred ones were better bundled together and let the men bid for them if they want them. The likes of those FR bulls are sort of specialised stock there not everyone's beast and it's the same few lad's around any ring that will buy them. I see that regularly lad's putting similar stock through as singles and they all end up on the same lorry going home to the one buyer.

It's different with colored cattle it's hard to get them matched good enough and you'll put lad's off if there's a lessor one in the bunch. You'd seldom see continental cattle sold in bundles around here, maybe an odd double but 3s or 4s would be unusual. It's mostly dairy bred ones you'll see being sold in number's. For a man that's looking to put together number's of stock it's a slow round buying singles at a time.

That's not the first time there was a scales "issue" at that mart

I know one man that stopped sales there 2 years ago as he had the heifers weighed before loading at home....there was a scene at the ring & he hasn't being back since

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,941 ✭✭✭cute geoge

A few years ago I weighed cattle before loading and they were not sold until 12 hours later and weighed 10kg heavier !!

go figure that one but i was not back there either

If you were dealing with the marts in West cork you would know all about retarded marts. Macroom heifer sale was a joke today. Only 5 or 6 lads looking on and no one there to buy them.
