Probably cheaper to start with a better car than this one :)

True, but I've never rebuilt a classic to save money!

What parts of it are 1978? I could see revenue having issues with granting vintage tax to that.

The chassis will be from a 1970's land rover. allegedly. If it is on a 1970's chassis then there is no issue.

Excellent price for this if its as decent as it looks and you can live with the lhd element.

    1976 5 TCL, "driving perfect" apparently, €1600

He describes it as a galvanised chassis - were they available in 1978?

I thought you'd need more than just the chassis - the engine is a 2.5 diesel, so that's not original either.

Wow, a while since I saw one of them, they used to be everywhere once upon a time - I remember the car park in college being full of those, 205's and MK11 Fiestas.

This one used to be local to me until a year ago. 1984, very last of the Mk1

Incredible to think that when this car came out its competition was the BMC 11/300, Mark 1 Escort, and HC Viva; even the Morris Minor Traveller...KE20 Corollas, Datsun 1200's, Simca 1000 etc

No reason why you cant galvanise an existing chassis. and it is the chassis that is important not the engine. The logbook is for the chassis.

Wish I had the spare cash for this.
    Same as my first motor.

well it is possible that the only part of the existing chassis is the plate with the chassis number. But I'm sure that is not the case with the vehicle here.

Is that allowed? So theoretically if I could gunter some or all of a 1988 range rover chassis under a brand new Range Rover (and I bet I could!), I could tax is classic? Seems crazy.

Is there not a declaration in the insurance about modifications ??

Insurance companies hade modifications and it on faormess has been modified extensively :)

I think the range rover chassis has to be pre '83. And it is legal if it is actually a range rover chassis. Taking the plate from a rotten range rover chassis and putting it on a newer chassis is less legal.

A good few years ago I jumped through months of hoops to reregister a 60's MG I had restored, as they wanted me to register it as a new car (!) - if I'd know this at the time I'd have just stuck a chassis plate on it and be done.

I'm going to check that out - if it's doable......

check what out? Putting a Disco body on a RR chassis or putting the plate from a RR chassis on a different chassis?

Putting some/all of a pre 83 chassis under a newer RR.

Absolutely doable. The chassis and body are separate items for both.

Oh yeah, I think mechanically it would be very easy, it's the taxing and insuring (but especially taxing) bit I'd be worried about.

All you need to tax it is the earlier tax book, the tax office don't want to see the actual car.

The first thing to rust through on an old Land Rover is the chassis, so where are all these solid vintage chassis coming from, hmmm:confused:

    They can be bought new.

no point using that as you won't be able to register it as a classic.

You would need to have a rotten one with logbook and chassis plate first.

    which would be illegal.

    which would be illegal.

In correct you can replace or repair any chassis.
    Similar to this company http://www.spheattransfer.com/index.php/chassis-repairs-cleaning/
The question I replied to was from hi5 looking for a solid vintage chassis.

What if you replaced the chassis in the rotten one with the new chassis? And then added the body from the modern RR onto the new chassis with the old chassis plate.

I mean I know there are illegal ways of doing it (as above poster) but I'm wondering if it's legal to do as I asked.
