This is lovely

An absolutely stunning car in the flesh, much nicer than the Manta B that came after it in my opinion. I remember talking to a chap who owned and drove one for a while and he’d always tell the story about the “suicide bonnet” apparently they would turn into a mobile beheading device should you have a front end smash due to the bonnet being hinged at the front.

Has very small time dealer written all over it. Neither a desirable interior, nor the best exterior colour but some sheepskin covers would do that the world of good. No word of MOT or anything else and you'd need to keep it under wraps for 6 months as well.

Worth a look all the same if you're in the market for one. Or chance it and wait 2 months for a price drop.

You'll be hit with a large VRT bill and the motor tax is still at the €1500 per year level (€400 or so per 3 months). Why would you bother with that? Just wait till you can get your hands on a 30 year old one. Good few of them coming up from time to time in the UK.

Is that on UK plates? In 5 weeks time there'll be Import duty on top of that and probably a fine for not doing the VRT in time. However on the plus side its got Lorinser alloys on it and in good condition they are worth €1500 plus!

Are they really? I got the impression that there are several decent RR indies in the UK that are reasonable enough. Parts are expensive but maybe not eye-wateringly, second hand from cars being broken? And anyone buying a car like this is only going to do small miles? But maybe over here it's a different ballgame and no RR indies?

I've read too that not only are parts etc desperately expensive, but everything is very complex. So if you do manage to save a few quid buying parts cheap, you'll be paying in labour costs.

That has to be a dog at that price.

It's underneath where they become really expensive, any rust and it can be a nightmare to sort. If the subframe is gone then it's possibly just for parts.

hydraulics need to be in top condition and there are some oddities like changing the coolant every 12-15 months as it somehow can cause the engine to seize.

You need a lot of specialist tools to fix them, so you need a dedicated Indy.

Decent ones are well over £20,000 in the UK (same cars were £8,000 5 years ago), so I'd be suspicious of that car. If it's anyways decent then take it on the boat for a quick profit. Seller says 'bodywork, paint and wood' need attention, so I'd say he means it's bad.

Does it though? Harry Metcalfe bought one recently for about GBP4k iirc and spent another couple of grand on it with an indy. Then he took it to the arctic circle. Only watched a few bits of it but it seemed to be a well sorted car.

The owner of that car has a classic restoration company in Wexford. He is not in the business of selling 'dogs' as he has a reputation to maintain. He is not hiding anything in the ad on Donedeal, and regardless of any of that, someone viewing the car will be in a much better position to judge for themselves. The asking price is quite reasonable compared to some of the real 'dogs' on Donedeal. Lay your suspicions aside for a minute, and try to accept that there may actually be genuine people, selling genuine cars for what they are actually worth.

My normal 5 senses aren't great, although my vision has been damn good since I got my eyes lasered nearly 20 years ago

I do however somehow seem to have a 6th sense for ads. It gives me the green light when I sense the buyer is good and the item for sale is good. I have bought many many times over the phone or on the internet just based on this gut feeling of mine saying things are good. And I have never yet been wrong. I got this good vibe about this ad.

I agree with the above to a degree. Certainly, on the flip side, there are ads that would put me off even picking up the phone, you know the person will be hard to deal with and slippers as f***.

But, some may remember my recent trip to Manchester to view a W123, the guy was so nice and honest on the phone/email and sent me over 20 pics that I asked for. He even collected and dropped me back to the train. But the car was a rust bucket when I lifted the carpets.

So, in my view, the ad is useful, but you really need a viewing.

PS sure is a lot of car for 5k!
