People, haven't you heard of shabby chic ? That couple are too cool for school. A bit too much going on for me and the bathroom looks a bit Hollywood circa 1950. I could see the judges liked it though.

Yeah we got it. Still thought it was a mess tho

They must be constantly explaining themselves "The walls are finished, we wanted this look"

Home of the year? A flat that looks like Joxer Daly gave it a sweep and a tidy up. And presenters gushing over a yellow cushion. Sweet suffering Jesus.

Just watching this now, forgot it was on at all!

    First house - gawjus.

Second house - the cottage - hmmmm. Far too cluttery for my liking (Declan clearly dsagrees!). Dunno about that curtain arrangement when you come in the front door.

Third house - I'm VERY conflicted! I love Georgian/Victorian houses - I grew up in one - but this just looks like a very, very expensive carving up of one (as opposed to the bedsits/flatland that were so common years ago).

There's just something all wrong about the kitchen being in that front room which was obviously originally a reception room, and should link to the back one as a drawing/dining room.

Now obviously for a hundred and one reasons that's not practical these days, and they've done a brilliant job doing what they did. But I just can't like it :(

Could they not have used (or reinstated, if they were gone) the original stairs to the basement?

And I definitely don't like the bare walls!

I'd LOVE to know where it is! Anyone?

The winner doesn't even have paint on the walls. What rubbish. This show is a joke. That architect from Clare should be livid these bunch of idiots have wasted her time.

I'd be well peeved if I was the owner of house number 1 tonight.

That bathroom in the winner looked like a marble cell - I felt claustrophobic just looking at it on the telly

I don't think I've ever disagreed more with a winner on this programme!

what was the round red object in the bathroom that the homeowner brought in with her and that the female presenter subsequently picked up?

A token to mark the owners' favourite spot in the house. Can't believe that was theirs!

It's part of the programme -every owner picks their fave spot and puts the red thing there

First house - I'm not normally a fan of architects homes on this show, they tend to be too show-offy of their skills. But it was just the right side of architecture but yet a liveable family home. It was practical, purposeful.

Second House - nice and sweet, a cute little house, loved all her dressers. Agreed with the judges that it was full of little bits and pieces but still looked tidy.

Third House - love Georgian buildings but the walls really let it down and for me ruined the whole look of the apartment. Liked the marble kitchen area but it didn't merge with the rest of the room, the fridge stood out like a sore thumb, could they not have integrated the fridge into a pantry/larder style unit in that corner. Didn't like the colour of the bathroom, it reminds me of something from the 80's I don't know why, I think some of the bathroom suites from the 80's were peach colour (otherwise they were avocado colour). Didn't like the blue sofa and actually it's positioning with the stairs behind it made me wonder how child safe it would be (knowing how much kids love to climb once they get going and the sofa is normally the easiest thing for kids to climb on). Also I didn't really get why they had white sheepskin rugs as the kids play areas. Most kids would have that filthy in a matter of minutes!

Disappointed the third house made it through, I would have liked the first house to get through to the next round.

    Agreed

Nope! Hated it - couldn't get my head around the layout and thought the extension was just boxy and ugly (and I like boxy buildings!). But each to their own :)

Forgot to mention the fridge in my comments last night - WTAF??? And they all gushing and gooing over it stuck in the corner like it was some student bedsit???

They completely messed up the proportions of both rooms, but especially the back room putting in those stairs - hadn't even thought of a climbing hazard!!

Oooh, I'm getting itchy fingers just thinking back on the whole thing now - it was awful!!!

As for the white sheepskin rugs - I'm assuming they were bought for the staging for the programme!!!

Disappointed the third house made it through, I would have liked the first house to get through to the next round.
    Agreed. 100%.

The pink bathroom is an acquired taste.A black and white marble would have been a safer choice.? Shabby chic is all the rage at the moment - I think its a statement by weekend warriors who have run out of money :D For me, the dark wood kitchen didn't work - it saps the daylight and is a bit tame for two designers, ?

I liked the second house. It had character and actually looked like a lived-in home that the owner's put their personality into. I'd be afraid to touch anything in the first house. It looked too sterile.

imagine a party in house #2, 500 broken plates. House 3 someone would puke on a wall and add to the character of the finish..

    Only caught up today.
Loved house #1 - A lovely balance between good architecture and a family home

House # 2 was nice but far too twee for my taste. Each to his/her own though.
House # 3 - A manky student bedsit with hideous marble. Loved the bones of the house, the structure, the windows, the plaster work etc but I hated what they did to it. It lost it's purpose and heart by carving it up. If anyone wants to see a fabulous restoration of a city centre Georgian house, just have a look at David Norris's house - now, that's how to renovate a magnificent property.

    I liked house 3

Love the georgian restore. Loved the kitchen and the bathroom - the decadence of the bathroom.

Hate those walls! Finish your house and stop pretending that those walls are intended to be like that lol!

Just caught this on playback. Jaysus the commentators are useless......the same gushing insincere tone for everything and the judging is so superficial. Won't be tuning in again.

Agree, you need a little criticism now and then. Declan used to try and introduce some balance but he has toned down this season. It would be better to call it house of the year and judge the architectural merits but I suppose that would rule out all those Georgian conversions.

Anyone watching tonight - do you know who the cyclist/architect is ?

Edit - Just found out http://www.rte.ie/tv/homeoftheyear/thisweek.html

The second house... fabulous from the outside but the inside is giving me a headache

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,267 ✭✭✭jos28

I could live with all that clutter, absolutely LOVED the last house. Admittedly the first one was architecturally worthy of a winning place but the restoration of that lovely terraced house was fabulous. I wish they would be a bit more specific about the locations. House 1 was in Grangegorman but I don't know about the rest.

Really liked the last house aswell. Loved the kitchen. Would move in their in the morning!

Just catching up now, didn't think I'd like the first house but it looks really cool and surprisingly comfortable.
I can't stand the way Hugh pronounces the word 'created' - it's like he can decide whether he's saying curated or created?!
Second house, lovely lady but i wouldn't be able to hack all the pictures on the walls and cushions and ornaments and bits and pieces cluttering it up - I mean, is that a statue sitting on the hob?! Some of the paintings were stunning but how could you appreciate any one of them when they're all bordered by more, more, more? To me, having so much stuff on display would be impractical and annoying. Homes are so personal really.
House two is gorgeous from the outside - always liked the idea of climbing ivy covering a building but when I admired it on a friend's house she complained that the place is always full of spiders as a result! No thanks!
Love the big chunky kitchen table in house 3, and the little bar shelf beside it. The bathroom is cool too, bit of a man's room. It doesn't strike me as the most comfortable house to live in, but for quite a modern style I like it a lot.

Can anyone remember what the judges least favourite home has been (in any series)? I don't think I've ever noticed any of them give less than a 7?

IMO, #1 was a deserving winner, but the one that sticks in my mind is #3, the "Boys'" one. Loved how inventive they were. #2, with all of the "stuff", would never have won, but still deserved to be shown, as it is so individual and expresses who this lovely lady is.

Did no one watch home of the year this week? Had to have been my favourite episode ever! Think that is the only episode I've ever seen where I was WOW at all 3 houses! The fact that the third house was a mock Georgian new build rather than an original house was a bit off putting for me. But that master bedroom, I wanted to sink my bare feet into that carpet before drawing those heavy curtains and getting lost in that bed!
Second house was great, those views. It was a really livable house (if that makes any sense!). Loved the curves with the kitchen island, the wooden interior wall and the staircase, small things but pleased me astetically (sp?).
Glad the first home got through. Loved the size of it, how it didn't feel small. Furnishings were great and loved the mirrored splash back in the kitchen. Loved that internal room, would be so cosy in the winter but yet on a summers evening open the double doors out.
