What kinda quotes were you getting with the Cooper S? Id love to get one but I cannot get any quotes online. 123.ie said I need more of a driving history - yet theyve no problem giving me a quote for a 1.9tdi Passat or even the 2.0!
When I first got the MCS I was 23 and had 2 years ncb with a claim 2 years previous. My insurance was in around the 900 mark if I remember correctly. That dropped to 550 ish last year and around the same again this year, except I'll be switching to the Z!

I didn't realise how young you were, it could be a tall order to get a decent quote for a few years unfortunately...

Yeah I think I'll hold off that dream for another couple of years haha..

So thats the Mini ruled out of my list of cars that I would like.. At this stage its really only narrowed down to Volkswagen & Audi .. And maybe Ford too .. Im really bad at making decisions :D

Yeah being 18 is kinda ****e regarding insurance. Guess I'll just have to go with it anyhow. At least I have my full licence and 1 years experience done as a named driver so it does help :)

Awaiting a call back from FBD regarding insurance with the Cooper S and an Audi A3..

Person I was talking to said that it would be difficult to get insured on the Cooper S but as we have our farm, house, my mothers car, fathers jeep and my sisters car insured with them then she said she would try her best to get me a reasonable quote.

I still know that it'll be absolutely ridicolous and it would probably be cheaper to get insured on an aeroplane than on the Cooper S :pac:

I'd expect it to be over €2k anyway. At the same time, screw being sensible, if you can afford the quote go for it! Tax is reasonable, and when driven gently enough they are ok on fuel!

    Best of luck man!

You could try Liberty they seem to give reasonable quotes for younger drivers.

On amother note I picked up one of the half price halfords sockets set. A nice very compact 1/4 inch set ideal for changing air, pollen, fuel filters and removing lights trim of cars as it has all the smaller sockets and torx pieces. Also Ideal for around the house for making flat pack furniture etc. When I got it I didn't have high expectations I knew it would be no snap on set. But after using it a bit today I'm impressed especially with the ratchet feels like it would take some abuse.
Here's the set anyway if anyone is wondering well worth 27 quid IMO.

His Is Was a turbo s so a lot more economical than the supercharger s.

Changeover was 07 or 06. I can never remember.

Mines the r56, they switched to turbos and was therefore a lot more economical. I'd get about 30 mpg out of it. The r53 is worse I'd imagine.

As for issues, the water pump went so I had that and the timing chain done, the r56 is notorious for throwing chains. The oil filter housing gasket went, not a big job but messy as hell!! The dump valve split in 2 because they are cheap and made from plastic, again not a big job but a turbo out job due to the location. Other then that it was just service parts. They do tend to burn oil too, but not at a massive rate really.

As long as they are looked after they will go forever, but neglect it at your peril because it will go wrong!!

Tax is cheap on them too which is nice. And the sound from the r56 is lovely. Loads of backfires out of the back when you lift off :D

Merlin Car Auctions has this 2007 Mini Cooper S R56 up for auction. Seems as if it has brand new NCT and still has a few months tax on it and looks in really good condition.

Down side is that its up for auction right now. If only I seen it yesterday and I wouldve been in Kildare this evening! :(

With regards insurance ring them all up and ask for quotes. While I had my licence two years and three years mcg, I was paying 900 on a 1.2 polo with 54 horses of fury. It cost an extra 1100 to insure my 156 v6 which had 192 bhp.
Had I listened to people saying I won't get a quote I'd probably still be driving that polo, or worse still traded up to a 1.4 golf like my dad wanted me too.
Should have saw my dad's face when I came home with an Alfa :pac:

Get the landline and ring every insurer and broker, you never know what the premium might be.
If you're going with it in your own name, don't forget to put the mammy and daddy down as named drivers.
Knocked 200 of mine and still knocks about 140 off

To the stupid driver on the M9 this evening what the hell were you thinking or were you thinking. The right lane is for overtaking and not sauntering along in, ambulance had every right to flash you but to pull back over without looking and nearly hitting into the car next to you ya big luder, wouldn't be surprised if one of us other drivers reported you for dangerous driving

i hope someone did.. The ambulance should have a camera poking out of the front of it.

also, apologies to the folks near sandyford for the double decker doing a 3 point turn on a small country road in a farmers gate...... and thank feck for reversing camera !!!

Decided I'd given it it a go of calculating the fuel consumption of my 166 V6. OBD over 500km came back with 44.3mpg.....:D

Turns out, calculated it actually got 34.9mpg which I was delighted with, but jaysus, 44mpg, think I got the OBD from the diesel or something.....

    :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭GvidoR

34.9 is still very good for a V6.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,031 ✭✭✭Bpmull

Not knowing much about the 166 if I had to guess on mpg Id of said 25mpg so 34.9 mpg isn't too bad at all for a v6 2.5 petrol at all IMO.

2 things that made me smile today:

Boyos in a decked border spec 406 hdi asked me was my 406 screwed/turbo wound out and to reek it out of the car park

And was behind a mohogany reg (or mo to the rest) bora earlier, done up full magherafelt. The quad porsche tips, flaps, chopped walloy stance, block plates. With one major flaw: it was petrol.... BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

My sat nav refused to charge in the car this evening because of the heat. "Device too warm" was the error message it gave me. That's how bloody hot it is today. Thank fcuk for A/C.

    Just a few scrapes :pac:

It looks like someone went over the whole front of it with a belt sander
I know it's cheap but it looks seriously rough and if the boot is closed which I think it is the panel cap is unreal.

I don't think I told any of ye on here but the grille was nicked off my Wolseley a few days ago.

I got this one this evening, for free off some chap. It's missing the badge and the old grille had a lovely period 70s AA badge, but I am delighted with this

I accidentally posted this in the car picture thread, so thought I'd fire it in here to see if anyone had any idea/was in the same boat:

If I were to permanently swap my insurance to a van (commercial) owned by me and transporting my own property (ie; not to be a man with a van/courier/delivery person) would my insurance just charge me more/less and leave me at it?

Or is that too straight forward and simple?

I have something in my head that tells me i lose my NCB if i switch to a commercial? That, even though I'm one single human person, my competence behind the wheel of a car and behind the wheel of a van are judged as two separate things by insurance companies?

    Bpmull wrote: »
You can't swap a car policy to a commercial policy. You would have to take out a new policy if that's what you mean. The ncb is transferable as far as I know although worth checking with your specific company. You won't be able to use the ncb on a car and van policy at the same time.

Would I be better off just getting a van and 'selling' it to a friend for €1. He has a van already, on a fleet policy, so would my life be easier if i just did that, and then drove the van when needed under his policy (i am over 25 and with a full license, so I can drive under a fleet policy, legally).

That way I can keep my own car and just use the van when needed (which would be rare, but I have an idea that could make me a few Euro if it worked out, which would require a van).

    Cheers :D
