Ah yeah shure look shure listen, by all means enjoy your new car, I wasn't trying to come across like that at all, just showing that there are other option!

Can't say I'll agree with your financial reasoning though, as it doesn't compute.

If you don't buy a Clio 197 for your 22nd I'll never let you forget it though...! :D

Ah that's ok I still have 2 years to get one :)

Granted I'm a bit older but why not have went for a merc? My old C200 petrol was a tank of a car, ultra reliable and never missed a beat. Car was peanuts to buy and insure. Petrol was a tad heavy with my mileage.

Even my old 520 was a peach of a car, again my miles were far too high to justify running it further

I genuinely can't see why you'd pick a new reg econobox over a fantastically reliable car that proved itself over the years.... Plenty of choice!!!

Ill be straight up about it because no one else seems to be holding back. Dgt 166man you have both said you'd have no interest in getting a diesel eco box like what Ive bought well that's fair enough. I would have no more interest in buying a 03 5 series bmw or old merc I wouldn't want one I wouldn't like one Id have no interest that's it. There are very few early 2000's car I would actually like to own as a daily driver Audi A4 would be one of the few springing to mind alfa 159 but they are newer anyway. There are plenty of old cars Id love to own a mk1 or mk2 golf, mini, mg tf, mx5, z3 Id love any of them and loads of others but not as a daily driver to do 30k km a year in as weekend cars.

I mean so if I was buying a daily driver bmw it would be an e90, e60, f10 or f30. I like the c class 08 onwards not particularly of them before than although I don't doubt the older ones are bulletproof plenty going with unbelievably high miles.

An e60 530d is about 3.5k now man,
M54 engine is as reliable an engine as you'd get and the torque would blow you away compared to the golf etc.
The old one done the 155 too ;)

I don't think you can see the value man if I'm honest, the lads are just advising not ripping you.
You seem to be getting upset.

Well wear bp. Can't see the need for the hate/disappointment. You don't have to have some lusted after car to be interested in cars, life has a lot of priorities that just involve getting A to B reliably.

Plenty time for all sortsa different cars. Well maybe the clock is ticking on some petrol options but you know what I mean. Took me a long time to be able to justify an indulgence of a car.

Still not exactly sure what you got.

    Today I saw...
a car salesperson driving like an arrogant gimp in a shopping centre and someone pressure washing internal surfaces of a Mercs doors. I really didn't know this was such a common thing.

Ah look I'm nothing upset anyway :)

I do see that everyone is only trying to help it may well be something to consider for the next time and I am definitely buying a 06/07 197 clio within the next few years just this wasn't the right moment to buy one.

At the end of the day the car is bought I'm as excited about getting it now as I was looking at it I spent an hour looking it over on Wednesday last week and then 4 hours deciding between it and another one last Thursday the garage thought I was going to move in with them :pac: I still think I've made the right decision and that I'll enjoy the car and that's the only thing that matters to me. How old or new it was never really came into it.

Anyway I think people are overestimating how much I'm putting with the money from my golf to buy it. It's not like it's costing me 5k extra or something like that.

    i completely agree.

i know i ripped a lot of piss out of the golf bp, but at the end of the day, if you have the money, buy what you want, once it makes sense to you.

you don't have to drive a 20 year old car and spend every second day throwing sugar at it to be a car enthusiast, it takes all sorts. my opinions (toyota) are probably some of the least popular on here, but i try to remain open minded to other peoples views and what and how they enjoy their cars.

    Thanks lads :)

@noccy it's a 2011 dynamique spec. Has alloys, front fogs, cruise control, a/c, speed limiter, radio controls behind the steering wheel, bluetooth handsfree radio with music steaming capability, aux input, trip computer, centre armrest (which is a big deal for me I hate not having them), electric windows all around and electric mirrors. Professionally fitted Clifford alarm system too.

But I do drive a diesel ecobox on a daily basis, albeit a floppy cheese eating one and I do put up wicked high miles in it a week... Doesn't miss a beat!

Guess what I'm saying here is I couldn't justify spending such a large amount on a car (to me it is). Cheap and throwaway, rarely stung.

I also prefer stuff I can really root with hence the 406, easily turned up quite cheaply.

That's my view on it anyway, each to their own...

Btw congrats on a comfy car, celebration puddings and toffee (I'm a hoor for pudding and toffee) in order for when it arrives! :D:D:D

I don't mean top speed limiter as in one you can set. So set it at 50 if you know there are a lot of speed vans it's kind of like cruise control but you are still using your foot I don't personally really see the point of it but it has it.

I'm currently trying to sort out what I need to put in the new car. As only ever having vans space was never an issue so I have built up a lot of crap. I have 2 plastic crates which I'm trying to reduce to one that has jump leads, torch, fire extinguisher, first aid, spare bulb set de-Icer, small 1/4 socket set, some disposable gloves, hi viz vest.

But then I have a full white bin bag of stuff I took out of the crevices and glove box of my own. There must be 5 flash lights :pac: actually you name it I have it anything that could ever be even slightly useful on the road I had it in the golf. I need to cut back big time.

reducing 5 flashlights to 1 would be a start....

I was thinking that alright. I have decent ring led inspection lamp so ill key that one and maybe one other small one and leave the rest of them out of the car. Lucky there is storage in the floor on the megane so I can put some of the smaller stuff in there.

I carried all that stuff in my previous car (c5) and never used any of it ever in 4 yrs. so I didn't put any of it in this car, 3 yrs later and haven't need it yet. So my advice would be, put a torch in the glovebox and leave the rest in the shed

I know it's probably overkill but then I'd be afraid the first day id take them out id need them :) ah infairness the boot is fairly big probably still smaller than your alfa though I think I'll be critical as to what I actually need rather than hauling around unnecessary stuff.

Boot in the 159 is quite small.
Were I to bother I would carry, jump leads, tyre gunk and an extendable tyre iron. That's it.

It's silver they had a nice dark grey one there nicer colour but the body was abit rough a lot of marks and scratches. I imagine with a decent Polish the silver will come up well.

    Not another one:(

I think you took me up wrong BP, I wasn't trying to rip it out of you for getting a new car, I was more pointing out different options and if you wanted to save money, how you could go about it a different way.

TFB is right, you don't need to drive a Ferrari to be an enthusiast, just enjoy car related things.

I like them Meganes though, they were very smart looking when they came out, hopefully it will be a good car for you.

Well wear - but I was damn serious about the Clio 197 before 22 lol

I've never had a silver car :) it does kind of suit the car but colour would generally be far down my list of car priorities.
