Great gym. Busy at peak times like every other gym.

stay away from peak if possible, but otherwise, clean, good equipment, good value.

whats it like at 7am or 12 for lunch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 226 ✭✭Reps4jesus

Don't go at lunch so cant comment but Monday and Tuesday mornings at 7 its pretty busy, can be waiting a while for a squat rack if you are unlucky but shouldn't have many issues getting a bench or any of the cardio equipment. Wed-Fri mornings its generally fine. Always people there but shouldn't impact your ability to get through your workout.

Good gym with good equipment, just after work can be a nightmare with how busy it can get

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 402 ✭✭kod12

cheers for that. It would be the squat racks I would be using mostly. Ill try it out sure cheers

Pretty bad at lunch until 2pm.

At 12 you'll be fine, from 1 to 2 is busy

Great gym. Busy at peak times like every other gym.

I am a member of all flyefit gyms and I hate them.
They are always packed, they have awful customer service, the vast majority of the trainers there are clowns.
The macken gym is always freezing, the baggot gym is a bit quieter but crap all equipment..
Swords is ok but always busy, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

    Ben Dunne would be better.
    I hate Flyefit.

How can you blame a gym for it being busy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,824 ✭✭✭LostArt

Im also a member of all Flyefit gyms, it's so cheap it's bound to be packed. I've never had a problem a peak times, yes it's packed but you're never waiting long for any equipment.

    Harsh on the trainers.

Do a better warm up. I never find it cold.

I think you'll find ALL gyms are busy at certain times.

I find Ben Dunne gyms very dirty and not in the good way.

You pay 32 quid a month to be a member of 4 gyms. At that price and considering their locations they are always likely to be busy.

I have never had an issue with their customer service. Everyone at the gym has always been helpful, however again you are paying bargain prices, you cant expect 5 star service.

I worked out with a trainer in Macken st for 2 months and thought she was great. Really helped me improve form and increase weights.

If you are getting too cold in the gym then you aren't working hard enough. I admit it is cold in Macken st but it doesn't take you long to warm up.

I have only been to the Ben Dunne gym out in Blanch and would recommend Flyfit ten times over above it.

There are Heaters in Macken street that you can turn on yourself with a switch.
Also just wear an extra underlayer, or hoodie, or actually do an intense workout.

I am a member of all flyefit gyms and I love them.
They are similar to most gyms in that they are busy at peak times, they have good customer service, the vast majority of the trainers there are friendly and professional.
The macken gym is nicely cool, the baggot gym is a bit quieter with plenty of equipment..
Swords is great but in swords, I would recommend it to anyone.

    Ben Dunne wouldn't be better.
    I love Flyefit.

Sorry for dragging this up but are you allowed use chalk in Flyefit gyms?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,399 ✭✭✭✭ThunbergsAreGo

I have and noone has said anything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,694 ✭✭✭✭Alf Veedersane

Quick Google and they're ok with it (according to their reply to the same question on Facebook) once you're not a dick about it and leaving what looks like flour-bomb carnage in your wake.

Liquid chalk so shouldn't be an issue so!

Which should be the same in any gym, they shouldn't need rules to tell you not to be a dick but sadly..

Recently moved from Ben Dunne to Flyefit (only tried Macken St so far). Generally much nicer, better maintained and newer equipment. Really like it. 24 hours too, which has me wondering what a midnight workout on the weekend might be like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭mufc1993

Anyone been to both Ranelagh and Baggot flyefit know which one is better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,824 ✭✭✭LostArt

Weights area in Baggot St is much bigger, apart from that there's not a whole lot of difference

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

They have a 3D walk-through sort of thing on their website. Ranelagh looks tiny and I can see barely any free weights or machines - is that right? No squat rack?

From what I can tell all the Flyefits are tiny aside from Macken St.

    Swords is big enough

2 squat racks in Ranelagh. They're all quite big, Ranelagh and Baggot street are spread out over a few floors.

Latest I've been was about 11:30pm on a Saturday and it was lovely and quiet. About 10 people there in total. Bliss.

Used to do lates on a Friday night before Christmas fwiw. Place was dead from 10pm, it was great. Had it to myself after a buncha young lads left early into my workout one beautiful, beautiful night. But that's Christmas, I'd imagine it's busier but still relatively quiet now.

Baggot st better, though not massively different.

I think the trainers in there are poor. They never offer advice or assistance to people doing things wrong or even a hi or how are you to people they pass. Surely being friendly and demonstrating their value with small tips or advice would get them a lot more PT business. Actually I've been in baggot St a year and there's been a very high turnover of trainers.

I want to change to Raw Condition or Your Fitness Harold's cross, any thoughts?

YF is pretty good for the price. Seemed like there was 2 racks though I could be wrong. If there's more it's not more than 3 or 4.

I'd reckon Raw has more equipment and it's just a good training atmosphere (YF atmosphere is a bit sterile). And some very good trainers in Raw as well.

They're not trainers, they're gym staff, and if someone working at a gym interrupted my work out to tell me that in their opinion I was doing something wrong they'd get a swift kick up the arse. If you want a personal trainer you need to hire one.

If I worked at your gym I'd interrupt your workout to tell you to clean up the pile of f*cking plates you left behind you :pac:

Cheers I was leaning towards Raw. Will try both next week anyway.

All the staff are PTs and have posters advertising themselves as such. I'm suggesting a bit of effort in their people skills would get them more business. Wouldn't go astray for yourself either.

They're not working as personal trainers unless you hire them as such. The advertisements and the listed fees should have been the first hint.

Depends what you're looking for. For weight training then you can't go wrong with Raw (although the lads constantly admiring themselves in the mirrors can be a little irritating), for cardio Raw is rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,061 ✭✭✭leggo

My first gym (in my secondary school) used to be filled with people, staff and regulars, who'd stop you and start giving you advice on workout and diet plans. I mean fair enough if your form is all over the place and you were about to hurt yourself or something, but just stopping someone mid-workout to be a know-it-all is a bit much and they'd get a rude response today if they did the same.

Haven't seen people admiring themselves in the mirrors in a long long time.

That sounds grand. Cardio is for outdoors if possible IMO. Want to have equipment like rings or bars for muscle ups and boxes for box jumps etc too.

I agree with that, but there has to be a midway point between that and ignoring everyone all around them. A simple bit of advice could be given in a friendly manner in a minute. For example, how can they not tell people when they're holding the handle on the rowing machine upside down??

Surely they have a duty of care as employees of the gym to highlight if someone is using bad form that could cause serious injury?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 819 ✭✭✭glasagusban

Tried Raw this morning. Maybe a better atmosphere of people working harder but not a better gym than fly really. Some really fit girls there was good I guess.

Good to hear. I've not been into it in 18 months so seems to have changed for the better :)

I doubt poor form is anything the law is concerned with, far too subjective. It would have to be far more dramatic than that for health and safety to factor in, like if someone was trying to barbell squat on a medicine ball or something equally ridiculous.

The bars in Raw are far superior to those in Flyefit.
