Both! My friend just asked me, I see white and gold and then when I scroll or look at the bottom only, it turns blue/black. Depending on where I look it changes.

Well now I won't sleep tonight until I make it turn black and blue :(

See it's not as clear cut as people think.

As far as I'm concerned it's clearly blue and black, I see a hint of white in the front and a bit of gold, but that's it, just a hint.

I saw this earlier! Saw it as white and gold. Then someone mentioned lilac! Now it looks lilac and a goldy green! Strange!

This is another pic, sorry can't post links. So the dress is black and blue, but just looks white and gold.

That's mental. I don't see any white at all, don't see any black at all. For me, it's clearly blue with gold/brownish trim.

It probably depends on your device. I don't think humans really see things that differently to each other.

    I see blue and gold.

Apparently that's the actual dress being worn by the Tumblr person who started all this ( of course it was someone on Tumblr)

There's absolutely no ambiguity there for me, black and blue.
Who would of thought before the internet was invented that one day it would be used so strangers could argue about the colour of a dress on the internet.

Yep, same dress, same woman posted it on her account!

I can see both, so I can tell that the gold and white doesn't look right, when its black and blue it makes more sense. Somehow....

Blue dress with brown lace type things stitched on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 302 ✭✭Brasso

Looks white and gold to me, but if I kinda unfocus my eyes like you do to see those 3d illusion pictures then I can see it as blue and black. Also if I bring the picture right to my face so I see it as double it turns blue and black.

Compared to the above, the original dress appears purple and black.

But still not white and gold.

No idea what is going on.

Yeah, my husband can't see anything but blue/black, whereas at the start I could only see white/gold.

    There was talk of divorce....

What colour we see depends on light and reflection. If that dress is blue and black normally, it isn't in the first picture where the reflections on the black reflective bandings are reflecting brown/gold.

In other news if a reflective white surface is lit by green light it looks green.

    Your eyes are f*cked :P

It helps to scroll so you only see the coat/shoulders, look at the coat and it should look white. Scroll down and the dress will look gold and white.

Whereas if you look at the very bottom of the dress it should look blue, scroll up and it should look blue black. Use the buzzfeed link though, works better.

I thought black and blue initially although after studying it I can how the sunlight shining directly behind lightens the dark trim.

Can't see where people are getting white from though.

I think the people who answer Lilac and brown trim are just really into the whole colour thing, so thats a valid answer.

There's an arguement that the result might differ depending on peoples retinas and the makeup of their rods and cones.

If I look from the top down, I see blue and gold. From the bottom up, I see blue and black. (I can't see any white anywhere on this.)

I think it has something to do with biases of the brain? The top part looks quite gold, so if you see that first you'll continue to focus on the gold looking part of the black areas further down, even where the black is clearer. The reverse is also true-- if you see the black first, you'll continue to focus on that as your eyes travel upwards. I forget what this is called-- confirmation bias, maybe?

I think all we can absolutely take from this is that many digital (phone?) cameras are really crap at capturing colours accurately in poor light.

No I mean into the various shades of colour. I don't like to get bogged down in indigo and lilacs and teal and all that kind of thing

I see lilac and brown. Not blue and brown.

    Does wearing glasses affect it?

Blue dress with brown lace/ trimming at top and gold trimming on the rest of the dress.
Is there no link to check what color the dress is on the store selling it to put us all out of our misery ? Lol

    I dunno, possibly.

Can we get some sciencey people in here to explain why people are seeing different things, or are loads of people actually just colourblinded and don't realize that.

I was talking to someone who claimed to see the dress first as black and blue and then white and gold, wtf!
