    Dame Judi Dench!

She always has such a great smile and so friendly in interviews. I was sad to read that her eye sight is terrible and she now struggles to get around on her own. :( But in typical Judi style, she won't let it get her down.

Was watching the oscars the other night... Mary Poppins, aka Julie Andrews, was presenting...

Christ... She just looked GREAT! Had to google her. She's 80 this October.

She was on Graham Norton earlier in the year. Soooo down to earth and funny.

I love Goldie Hawn. She just oozes sexiness and contentment.
I have also always loved Susan Sarandon. Any time I have seen her in interviews she appears very wise and sure of herself.
It seems a cliche but being confident is so attractive in people.

    All hail Queen Meryl.

Tbh I know this might go against the ethos of the thread but I would. In. Heartbeat. She is so gorgeous.

I also love Julie Walters, Julie Andrews, Kate Mulgrew (best known as Janeway from Star Trek Voyager), Janis Ian (amazing folk musician), and Helen Mirren. Maggie Smith is brilliant but apparently a thundering bitch in real life so that tarnishes it a bit...

Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth (well, sadly they are no more) She is still rocking out at 61 and looks amazing, without any interventions whatsoever!

Yep Meryl Streep, Hilary Clinton, Mary Robinson, Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith (don't really care about her bitch reputation - who's to say it's accurate anyway!), loads more!

I tend to love the older women that show they can hold their own on the Graham Norton Show, my favourites being June Brown & Julie Andrews. :D

I don't know if she qualifies for her age but Christine Lagarde purely for her style. I am sure she is very capable but she also looks great. :D

In acting world it is the usual suspects: Helen Mirren, Judy Dench, Merly Streep, Susan Sarandon...

    Julianne_Moore_US_Holywoo-433139.jpg

The elegant, talented, and intelligent Julianne Moore. Madonna hasn't got a fraction of her presence or impact, in spite of all the attention grabbing she does and all her attempts to stay relevant.

I also love Helen Mirren, she looks like she'd be really interesting company and has a little wicked streak.

    73418436.xlarge.jpg

And I adore Betty White, 93 years of mischief is written on that smiling face.

And another vote for Jamie Lee Curtis, she looks like she knows how to have a laugh. :)

It looks good on them. But I think a lot of women fear long hair is not age appropriate. Whatever suits.

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Monica Bellucci is one of the sexiest women I've ever seen despite being old enough to be my mother. She is so beautiful it's almost painful to look at and she's not a bad actress either! :D I hope she does well in the new Bond movie SPECTRE.

Ive got to contribute to this as I have quite a few images of older women I like or admire. These are women who just seem to get more stroppy with age or right to the end.

Heres a happy looking Freda Khalo, happier than any image I know of hers.

Freda Khalo is with Chavela Vargas in the photo above and here is Chavela in a YouTube clip of her in later years.

I'm not allowed post images as I've less than 50 posts  but I've just finished Viv Albertine's autobiography and she is an absolute legend! She was amazing with The Slits in her 20s and she's still every bit as courageous, fierce and cool as she was then. She also looks absolutely amazing for 60.

You know, Candie, you may prefer to look like her at that age, but generally speaking, you don't have a choice. Aging is largely due to genetics, so criticizing Madonna for looking older is unfair criticism. You don't want to act like Madonna is fair criticism. Julianne Moore was blessed with perfect skin and luscious hair, so she deserves no credit for aging well.

I'm shocked at any women who hold other women in high esteem simply because they are born beautiful. I would expect more from women, I really would.

I know exactly the context in which it was written. You said, and I quote, "I know who I'd want to look like at that age", as if looking like Madonna is a crime, disregarding her style. And if you don't want to look like her, fine, but I have a right to think you're shallow for doing so. I don't want to dress or act like her either, but I also wouldn't want be Julianne Moore-- one of the most boring, untalented nothings to ever come out of Hollywood (I don't care how many awards she's won).
Meryl Streep, on the other hand, is not in the least bit vain, and can smoke Julianne Moore in the talented stakes any day of the week.

Rubbish, I was clearly referring to her attention grabbing style. I don't want to look like her at any age, I'd prefer to look like the poised and elegant Moore, as stated. Unless you can claim to be able to read minds, you'll have to take my word for it that you got it completely and utterly wrong.

Madonna has had so much work done that her aging is anything but natural. Plus her lean body with stringy muscles is a result of lifestyle and not genetics either.

Im sure Julianne Moore has had work done too but its been subtle.

To get us back on topic, I still love Sally Field!

I was actually amazed at Barbera Eden, aka Jeanie from the 60s sitcom. She looks almost exactly the same just with a few extra lines!

Also to be fair, Hillary Clinton is looking great for 68 and certainly doesn't look "old".

I think in general people are ageing lot better these days. It's not just celebrities. I've relatives in their 80s who look much more like 60.

Main thing is eat healthily, don't smoke and keep active. Deciding that you're old is probably the biggest part of suddenly looking old.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,624 ✭✭✭✭meeeeh

Actually going for mutton dressed as lamb look can age people too. That and the vile mother of the bride style marching dress/coat outfits. Once you start wearing them you are old regardless of actual age.

+1 on Hillary Clinton. Anyway I also like how Angela Merkel deals with her look. what ever political meeting she has her wardrobe will not draw any attention. And it is refreshing when female politician is disliked for her actions not because she is wearing pink. :D

Perhaps I was wrong, but I've seen you make unprovoked attacks on celebrity women's looks before (in this forum, precisely), and I was genuinely shocked to find out you were a woman, so that's why I jumped to that conclusion. I'm also sick and tired of people acting like Madonna's killed a newborn baby or something because she dresses like an idiot. She should get way more criticism for being a moody snob. But if you admire Julianne's poise, then fine.

I, however, admire the likes of Meryl Streep. Every interview I've seen of her (and I've seen a lot), she's classy, smart, and most of all, interesting-- a quality very rare in actresses.

In general most women political and business leaders just dress normally. The era of over the top stuff is long gone and it actually tends to just undermine them.

Guys could do with being able to dress a bit more non uniformly though too. men's business attire is incredibly dull. You get a few exceptions like Richard Branson who breaks the mould but, mostly it's just totally personality sapping stuff.

A healthy balance between the two extremes is definitely better.

One thing I think is worrying though is the tendency to ditch older current affairs TV anchors. In the past this mostly impacted women but it's hitting men too. You need experience on air for this kind of stuff!!

Hollywood could definitely do a lot better too though. There's still a definite tendency not to write decent roles for older women while writing amazing roles for older men and there's a wealth of outstanding older female actors who I would actually like to see in more movies because they're just amazing actors!

I didn't take candies post up that way at all.

I think with Madonna, she has really pushed her self as a sexual object over the years and very often that is how people are going to see her.

I lost respect for her when she did the kiss on mtv music awards with Britney Spears. Britney clearly being on the edge at the time and has had public breakdowns. Madonna should have been old enough and experienced enough to see that using this kind of exploitation and selling yourself as an object is not as easily handled for some people like Britney. It was said at the time that madonna was her mentor, showing her the way and teaching her the tricks. Madonna sees an opportunity to shock and takes it. The reality is she is not a lesbean and I feel it was a bad move. She then decides she wants to write children's books and become mother earth. I'm not saying you can't be everything but that kiss thing was very contrived and she was clearly trying to paint an image of herself to gain a certain audience. It's not surprising that people feel confused by her and wouldn't aspire to be like her imo.

What she does is not art imo, she is very good at controlling an image that she thinks people will buy into. We see it now more with the likes of miley cirus and Rhianna and it comes off as blatant attention seeking, vanity, and a false act to show a bad girl side by using shock tactics nothing to do with their music or as they call it their "art".

I took candies comment as meaning that Madonna and Julianne are very different not just by how they look (personally I think Madonna is more aesthetically attractive). If you were to compare the two, you could say they are both very savvy, intelligent, controlled and confident however I think Julianne is not afraid to show her feminity, poise and grace and doesn't need to pretend to be something that she is not. She just is who she is and does the best job she can do without selling herself in the process. Madonna pushes to be more like men well it appears this way but really what she does is objectify herself to men and women and gives the wrong message.

What Madonna appears to do is portray that she is comfortable with her sexuality and plays it as a liberalisation for women but really I feel that she is taking a step back.
